In all the severe cases of parental alienation I have worked with, each child has experienced repressed positive memories of their alienated parent, a parent they once had a positive relationship with. Positive memories surface through the alienation process; they are emotionally painful for the alienated child. The child feels extremely guilty if they see their alienated parent or think good thoughts about them. The child pushes these memories away to survive the situation. The good loving memories with that parent are stored. Sometimes, the child can feel as if their thoughts are monitored by the parent they have aligned with, afraid they will disappoint them or break their trust. The child feels guilty for participating in the alienation process and rejecting a good loving parent. They can feel completely at fault for the entire situation.
