Animation is widely considered purely as a form of entertainment, specifically for children. As such, animated TV series, films, and video games are really the only types of main stream animated media. However, this is a gross underrepresentation of the medium, and is disingenuous to the potential of animation as a tool for more unorthodox activities.

Upon further analysis of the historiography of animation, the medium was never truly relegated to purely the arts and entertainment. Animation has a found a noble use in being a practical and conceptual medium in professional fields that require versatility for a host of representational needs, such as science, medicine, pedagogy and advertising (Cook, Cowan and Curtis, 2023). This is due to a few reasons; Animation not only provided a way to represent existing knowledge efficiently, but could potentially produce new knowledge through this dynamic methodology of representation. It also became popular because it took the details of the real world and simplified them for a versatile audience. It could guide the attention of the viewer, and visualise phenomena that could not necessarily be seen or be accessible in an ordinary context. As it had the ability to render change through metamorphosis allowed for impactful visual metaphors that could lead to a paradigm shift within the viewer. Thereby, it offered a powerful means of knowledge production and transmission, of psychological or emotional persuasion, and of perception and attention management. As such we can assume that because of this, animation being used as a catalyst for positive change is not a far fetched possibility.

Animation is a form of expression with both manipulative and critical potential. It is a form of expression capable of involving the viewers in a complex sensory engagement. In addition to the purpose of education, animated films are important tools for bringing out the creativity within children (Okeh and Nwosu, 2021). When used effectively, they stimulate interest among children. These films also enhance the moral development of a child through didactic messages embedded in them. So, children are encouraged to be active learners instead of passive recipients of knowledge. Particularly as a tool for teachers, animation allows for the possibility of playfully exploring a wide range of situations in a full-safe context, young people would be empowered in a healthy way to be open to continuously reviewing and revising their own sets of assumptions.

On the topic of education, the view of learning itself is a social phenomenon, which is evidenced in approaches where an already populated social arena is created by technology—intrinsically social or content oriented approaches (Gulz and Haake, 2006). Thereby, animation could further be a crucial tool in the future of education as well.

Additionally, animation has also been used as a tool for mental aid and in other educational models. "Good" animation is one that abides by the research-based principles of multimedia learning, is created with a particular learning theory goal in mind, is used within established systems which target specific learning outcomes, and is one that is mindful of the practical and theoretical use of what is learned by the student (Belford, Moore and Pence, 2010).

One such example was Michael Polyani, who was a chemist, but used his background in Science in order to visualise the social and political flow of money through his film Unemployment and Money in a more digestible way for general audiences.

Staying within the realm of science, scientific film drew from conventions for producing scientific figures, charts and tables, Thereby, as a result the new ability to show processes in motion also had a feedback effect on the work of scientific illustrators, who sought to devise new ways of depicting processes on the printed page. Animation as a modern medium inspired change through its own unique form of visualisation.

In medicine, animation was seen to have been a crucial tool for health education campaigns during and post World War I (Cook, Cowan and Curtis, 2023). It not only provided a way to represent existing knowledge efficiently, but could potentially produce new knowledge through this dynamic methodology of representation.

In a modern context, creating positive change via design (and by extension, animation) has been explored in an increasingly dystopian world. Whilst design/animation could be the solution, one could argue that it is in part responsible for creating the problem in the first place. Through the design and creation of highly sought after products and services (consumerism), social and environmental systems have been brought to the brink of destruction. In actuality, this is an unfair statement. If design (and by extension, animation), is defined as the creation of something according to a set plan, then it is this “plan” that needs to be reevaluated (Coughlan, 2010). Upon further inspection, one could draw parallels between the production process of animation vs the products and services that have rendered environmental harm over the last few decades. Therefore, by virtue of consumerism, animation and design have already proved that they can catalyse massive change. If one were to change the intention of the process behind the craft, hypothetically we could create large scale positive change in the world.

Ultimately, the consensus is that if animation exemplified and solidified emerging trends, it also offered new ways of seeing, which became part of the conceptual vocabulary of each discipline. There is a need to chart these interrelations, showing how animation not only helped visualise existing disciplinary knowledge, but also contributed to the evolution of that knowledge. So how can this be applied in the modern era? Returning to the idea of creating a sustainable future, the use of animation as a medium for hope based on real world issues such as the climate crisis, social injustice, pollution etc. from a different perspective (the perspective of a Solarpunk future) a la Polyani's Unemployment and Money, this information could be made more digestible and impressionable on audience members' minds, particularly in primary education. This is further reinforced by the popularity of the anime Vinland Saga, whose protagonist famously uttered the words "I have no enemies" which led to a whole subculture of mainly young men who practice stoicism, kindness and bear an almost Taoist mindset. This is one such train of thought that I aim to bring to the first draft of my dissertation.

This post is a loose breakdown of the notes that I have taken on the topic of the pedagogical value of animation, plus some of my own thoughts and observations on the matter. Using this information, I feel that I have enough to think of a structure for my dissertation.
