Purist

Het concept van Magic-purist kwam tot mij in 2012, tijdens een PTQ in Leuven. In de vierde ronde speelde ik tegen Ruud van Warmenhoven in mijn favoriete formaat: Modern. Hij speelde Caw-Blade, ik Living End. Ik kende, en ken, Ruud persoonlijk niet. Ik had tot dat moment slechts één keer eerder tegen hem gespeeld: 2007 in Time Spiral Block Constructed. Het was toen een draw geworden, en ik wilde in Leuven toch wel graag van Ruud winnen, ik wilde wel een positief record tegen een Magic-pro van weleer. Want ondanks dat ik Ruud niet persoonlijk kende, kende ik zijn naam natuurlijk wel. En winnen van die naam, dat zag ik wel zitten.

Het stond 1-1 in games en er volgde een lange en spannende pot 3, die ik won. Ik won. En daar was ik zeer tevreden mee, het beviel me om voortaan te kunnen zeggen dat ik een positief record heb tegen een Magic-pro van weleer. Maar Ruud was helemaal niet bezig met m’n positieve record, hij was helemaal niet bezig met het verlies, hij was bezig met hoe hij verloren had. “Ik heb een fout gemaakt. Als ik die Vendillion Clique anders had gespeeld had ik de pot kunnen winnen.” hoor ik hem nog zeggen. Ik keek hem wat verward aan waarna hij het me uitlegde. Ik kon niets anders dat het met hem eens zijn. Daar zat ik dan, met m’n positieve record tegen Ruud, alleen maar omdat hij een fout had gemaakt. Dat liet toch een zure nasmaak achter. Ik kruiste nog snel ‘drop’ aan op de resultslip voordat ik hem inleverde, want ondanks dat ik net gewonnen had stond ik nu 2-2 en het was prachtig mooi weer in Leuven dus besloot ik een stukje te gaan lopen om die zure nasmaak weg te spoelen met een ijsje.

Toen ik tijdens de laatste ronde terug de zaal in liep zag ik tot mijn verbazing dat Ruud nog het toernooi aan het spelen was. Sterker nog: op een lage tafel aan het spelen was, waarschijnlijk om niet meer dan één booster. Een Magic-pro van weleer. Eén booster. Maar dat was het punt niet, want wat mij vooral opviel was de focus waar Ruud mee speelde. Het podium waarop hij speelde maakte hem niet uit, wat er op het spel stond maakte hem niet uit, tegen wie maakte hem uit. Hij was uitermate gefocust met maar één doel: zo goed mogelijk te spelen.

Vanaf dat moment is Ruud mijn boegbeeld van een Magic-purist. Mijn voorbeeld. Mijn held. Sindsdien tracht ik half de Magic-purist te zijn die hij is, en om je eerlijk te zijn waan ik me dat tegenwoordig zelfs al.

En als dat niet terecht is, heb ik altijd dat positieve record tegen een Magic-pro van weleer nog.
