Synopsis: part one was pre-lobotomy, this is post lobotomy. Rex is groveling.

“Rex?” You’re looking at him confused. You had heard, of course— about the lobotomy he had gotten from that Lizard League person; Eve had been kind enough to call and tell you about it, but since you didn’t have clearance and you weren’t family, you hadn’t gotten to actually go see the asshole.

He stood at your apartment door, a big bouquet of your favorite flowers mixed in, looking almost sheepish as he looked away from your face, heat rising to his cheeks.

“What—why—“ you couldn’t formulate a question for the amount of thoughts you had. What you needed was to touch him and know that he’s really real. Alive. Okay.

“Look, I know I—“ he starts to speak, but he’s taken back by how you so quickly move to wrap your arms around his waist and hug him, disregarding the flowers completely. “Uh.”

“You’re okay.” You say softly, relieved, breathing him in. He was wearing a cologne you had gifted him for one occasion or another that you were certain that he had lost between moves from the teen team to the Guardians HQ.

His strong arm wraps around your shoulders, his lips finding temple to press a soft kiss to the skin. “I am.”

It takes you a moment, but you pull back before smacking him hard in his chest, again catching him off guard.

“Hey! What the hell!?”

“Don’t scare me like that again, dipshit!” You tell before sighing, taking a step back and smiling softly, nodding into your apartment now that you’ve gotten the bit of rage out of your system. “C’mon, we have some catching up to do.”

You two yap and talk. You tell him about Cletus’ retirement and how the newer baristas are doing, and who you caught fucking in the supply closet. He tells you everything that happened with the Lizard League and how boring things had been in the hospital. He tells you about the visits he’d gotten from Mark and Eve, and how the latter had gotten him some home decor magazines before ranting about the latest trend in woven cabinet fronts.

You can’t help but watch him as he talks, something seems different in a way you can’t exactly place. You look to the flowers he brought, now sitting pretty in a vase on your kitchen table, and then back to him. His green-eyed gaze finds yours, that weird, shy smile gracing his lips again.

“Look— I had time to do a lot of thinking while I was in the hospital, and I want—“

“Rex, it’s okay.” You interject, and he huffs, shaking his head.

“No, don’t let me out of this. Listen.” He says, almost demanding as he scoots closer to you on the couch, wrapping his hand around yours, and you nod, letting him finish. “I was… an asshole. To you, to Eve, to Kate— I mean, I don’t really know why any of you still talk to me, but especially you.”

His thumb runs over the back of your hand as he takes a moment to gather more thoughts because while the man was great at talking, sharing his emotions was different. He kept his real feelings close to his chest, and you don’t think you’ve ever seen him this unguarded. Even when he shared pieces of his past, he kept up a wall.

“You have no reason to keep me around. To let me continually be here and talk your ear off about all this stupid shit that happens in my life, I mean, the others they’re coworkers… but you? I couldn’t have blamed you if you kicked my ass to the curb and never talked to me again.”

He keeps rambling on for a bit, rushing his words like he’s on a time limit to get it all out of his mouth.

“I know, I know I don’t deserve it, but please. Please. Just give me another chance. I swear on every fiber of my being that I’ll do better. Be better. I’ll be the best boyfriend you’ve ever had. Okay? I love you, please let me just—“

“You love me?” You ask, swallowing hard at his admission, surprised etched into every feature on your pretty face and his flushes, swallowing hard and nodding in agreement.

“I do, and there’s nothing more that I want now than to prove that to you.” He says, his words profound and deep-seated as he drops your hand, his raising up to hold your cheek as he gazes deep down into his eyes. “Please, y/n. Say yes. Give me another chance.”

Your breath catches as you lean into his touch, your eyes on his as he leans in a bit, his breath grazing across your lips as he waits for your answer.

“Yeah, okay.”

He looks surprised, that bright grin that reaches his eyes and he double checks, “yeah?”

“Yeah.” You agree once more, and before you can even think, his lips are on yours, kissing you like he has to make up for every missed moment and every fuck up he’s ever had with you.

Rex isn’t the smartest man, but after his brush of death and coming to terms with his feelings, he knows he’s never going to let you slip through his fingers again.
