you would not believe how easy it is to borrow from a certain red-colored arts and crafts store. if the rifd alarm goes off nobody even stops you. everyone is so underpaid and either stoned or gives too little of a shit to stop you. the keys to the expensive markers are usually just sitting in the framing shop (which usually has no cameras, not that it matters because nobody checks them anyways). most of the time you dont even need the keys because the little plastic box they keep them in is so flimsy that you can pry it open with your bare hands. also if you use a paypal card and tell the generally inexperienced cashiers (who usually wont last more than a couple weeks) to press the cash out button it will let you get stuff for free. the classrooms also have no cameras and are always unlocked if you want to conceal.

word of the day: Blandishment

The rain was soaking the fliers, and he still had a mountain of them to hand out. There was no way he would meet his quota before the end of the shift. He lamented on the old days, how he could just chuck the fliers into a trash can whenever he wanted to call it a day, whenever he felt like going to a diner or something. But the RIFD tags in the paper now tracked the fliers he handed out and a basic outline of whom. The RIFD tags were affordable now, and they were in everything, and they made his life so much more harder than it had been before. Everything was trackable, everything was able to be held accountable. Now he had to bend his back backwards for the hopes of passerbys getting a flier, had to launch desperate blandishments in the wind for the hopes of getting someone’s attention for a single second.

Economical thoughts: In a paragraph, we’ve established a sort of setting (near-future, possible state surveillance, or maybe the economy has created a profit incentive to micromanagining even the smallest, most mundane jobs). The person we’ve started to create here is someone that is stuck at a dead end basic entry job, but also someone who is “old enough” to remember an age where one wasn’t endlessly traceable. So this begs the question: would the potential protagonist be an old man, or a youngish man caught in the swirl of constantly evolving technology, the practice of things done years, weeks ago quickly rendered obsolete by the next shiny new thing to emerge from the plotline? I would argue that the second aspect of this question could make for a potentially dynamic story: a man with the energy and drive to want to become something, but is constantly pushed to the edge of oblivion by a world that values a skillset possibly over his head, of assurance something he doesn’t currently possess?

And why doesn’t he have that, the techie background? Let’s assume this man is in his forties, a period I would argue would be a time where one isn’t quite so young, but not quite so old enough to be forgotten. Did he pursue something in the arts? Wouldn’t that make for a kind of stereotypical story, some kind of pedantic nonsense where one travels along the line of the value of mindful aesthetic over technological progression? Probably the more interesting line to follow would be that he pursued a career rendered obsolete by technology, some kind of automated thing. Something he thought would be a safe choice to invest in, back in college, back when the job market was still a lot wider than it is in the current market. Something responsible, like maybe engineering? Manufacturing?

Maybe he was a competent engineer. Not a revolutionary, but someone you could rely on in a work setting. Him and the team he was involved in automated processes, worked to make things more efficient, up to the point where 99 percent of the team itself was rendered no longer necessary on the floor due to how efficient they made the processes. And so out of the team, one person would be chosen to manage the new automation, and he wasn’t charismatic enough, or shining enough on a piece of paper, or distinguishable in a way that they valued and of which he’s unsure of what they wanted, and isn’t chosen to be the one percent with a still stable job. And him and the rest of the engineers, now forced onto a market with a limited number of jobs, now passing out fliers to make ends meet.

So the scenario we set up would be that he is someone that is trying to find some kind of value in the world. But unfortunately, we’ve set up a world where a lot of the skills people do can be done in mostly by machines. Maybe he tries to pursue a job too technical and precise for even the machines to handle, but can’t attain them. One needed to be dedicated from the beginning for such a job. So maybe something else a machine can’t do, something in communication. Maybe he tries his hands at sales?

A pretty boring story would strongarm him into doing something unethical in order to drive his sales and pivot that into the dilemma of the story. But wouldn’t it be more interesting to create a story that mirrors his path in the factory? He sells something not inherently good and not explicitly bad but with its fair share of fanatics, people that piss their lives away in celebrating the thing he’s selling. He’s not the best at the sales but he’s competent, and so is the team he’s working with, and eventually because they are good and honest and decent and dedicated to their jobs, they unknowingly create a market of people far too deep into whatever it is they’re selling. What could the product be? A thing you eat? Times are rough and lean so maybe something you could believe in? An idea, a hope? A thing of entertainment? Seminars selling nothing but feel good aphorisms? Hmmmmmmm

maybe that’s the whole story: people in their work, trying to dedicate themselves to their jobs and earn and be decent towards the people around them, end up creating things that cause life to be worse for everyone. I could say they were led by the nose by some cackling villain, but isn’t that a bit boring too? Maybe the head of their sales team has a vague understanding of the ethical ramifications of the thing they’re selling, but she also has kids, kids that she needs to afford to go to school, kids that need to be dressed at a price point where they won’t be made fun of?

And what of the guy? What is he supporting?
