A ramble lol
I've been writing down some ideas for fanfics. The hardest part is that I can't just write down any indulging idea I have for a series; it needs to be one with clear intention and purpose. It can't be pure fluff and such (though I'd never write pure angst, either). I'm not saying there needs to be a clear message, just something I feel passionate for and has emotionality in it.
Some series & the ideas I like the most from them:
Hyakkano/100 Kanojo (Nano & Shizuka on a date)
Re:Zero (Subaru has a surreal dream)
Bocchi the Rock (Fantasy AU & Bokita shenanigans)
SSSS.Gridman (Yuta x Rikka shenanigans)
Madoka (MadoHomu shenanigans)
Gundam Witch from Mercury (Sabinika w/ Chuchu drama, takes place at different points during the second half of Season 2)
I want to write some for CSM and Utena, but idk what I'd write about tbh. I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Female Reader x Okkotsu Yuuta
You were a good girlfriend. Or you would be if you had a boyfriend. Anyone could ask any of your male friends. You were charming, funny, and cute. You often wondered if maybe it was because of your male friends on why you didn’t have a partner. Someone to lay with at night and call your own. Or maybe you were meant to just mess around and engage in hookup culture like your friends did. You should take some notes from Maki-Senpai. You drowned out everyone around you as you thought your way into a headache. The drink in front you only being fiddled with as your partner continued to type up your mission report over text to Gojo.
As you were lost in thought, Yuuta thumped his foot against yours. You quickly jumped out of your little mind bender to look at him. He smiled sweetly as he pointed to your menu.
“You gonna grab anything to eat, we have the company card so we can splurge.” He said, dropping his gaze to look over the options himself. You let out a soft ‘oh’ before looking over the meals and various pictures of food.
“I just want chicken and rice, you know I'm easy when it comes to food.” He hummed in agreement before deciding on his order as well. “What are you getting, Okkotsu?” You asked, resting your elbow on the table so you could settle your head into your hand.
“Mmm fried chicken, rice, and pickled radish. Maybe something to drink as well.” Your eyes light up at the thought of a drink. He smiled at your reaction and said, “Maybe a few drinks.”
After a long dinner and a few shots, Yuuta had you back in your shared hotel room.
“Jesus fuck, I promise I’m not a drunk or anything, it’s just-” You said until you cut off.
“Been awhile?” Yuuta said.
“Yeah,” You sighed. You watched his tall frame rummage around his luggage for his sleepwear, a baggy t-shirt and some sweatpants.
“I’ll be back. Gonna change real quick,” He said, moving towards the bathroom.
“I should do the same.” You said, moreso to yourself than him. For some reason, in your drunken stupor, you felt exposed as you removed your work clothes. The tights uniform left small indents in your plush skin. You pressed your fingers against the indents. After a few breaths you realized you should probably put some clothes on.
Reaching for a tank top and some sleep shorts, you worked the fabric over your frame. As soon as you finished, Yuuta emerged, a band around his head, pushing his hair out of his face with moisturized dewy skin. You quickly pressed your fingers against your face, realizing the guy probably had better products than you. Also, crazy enough, Yuta had a girlfriend once. Or well… Still does. A wife? What would you even call Rikka? Soon your little thoughts from earlier came rushing back into your head and you looked over back to the man.
“Uhh, Y/N?” He finally called out to you, causing you to meet his eyes. “I can practically feel you staring at me… Is something up? Do you want separate rooms?” He politely asked. You quickly shook your head.
“No, it’s not that but,” you said, moving to sit on the mattress and cross your legs. “I’m having trouble trying to say it,” You admitted to him. He nodded patiently, waiting for you to continue. Sorting through your thought process. “Do you think I'd be a good girlfriend or like… Is there anything wrong with me?” Yuuta opened his mouth only for your rushed words to come out. “I mean like, Maki and Nobara have guys flocking to them! And I get that I’m not them but I think I’m pretty cool! I know that it’s not just down to looks but I just- It’s just that- I wanna-”
Yuuta grabbed at your hands to slow you down and get you grounded to him. You stopped talking and waited for whatever prophetic word would come from him.
“It’s not like that, Y/N. It’s just up to chance sometimes.” He said, smiling with his words. You immediately groaned, pushing his hands away and deflated at the phrase.
“Sure, yeah, but honestly sometimes I just wanna be touched! And held! It’s driving me nuts!” You fell back against the sheets for dramatic effect, pushing your legs out. Yuuta rested his palm against your shin, gently running his thumb over it.
“Do you want to cuddle or something?” He asked. You sat up on your elbows at his words, looking over his soft pretty features before nodding at him. “We could cuddle for a bit until we fall asleep if you want.” And with that you rushed into your night routine before coming back to the bed.
Suddenly you felt almost shy in front of your friend. You fiddled with the hem of your shirt as he lifted the thick comforter up and slid over, making space for you. With a quick ‘thank you’ you moved to occupy the space. Instead of spooning him, you surprised him. You pressed your face into his chest and lifted a leg to go over his hips. His skin was warm and his heartbeat was thumping loudly.
Your mind went blank as he dragged his fingertips gently up and down your back. It pulled you into a peaceful state of mind. You’re so used to fighting curses and hand to hand combat you almost forgot a touch could be so gentle.
You pressed into him more, looking forward to see the exposed skin of his collarbone. In your daze you pressed your lips against his skin, causing the repetitive drag of his fingers to stutter. You pulled back a little, moving your leg off of him, feeling your nerves take a hit.
“Sorry,” you said, untangling yourself from him. Instead of a response, Yuuta leaned down, pressing his soft lips against yours. You gripped at his shirt, working your lips against his before he pulled back.
“Don’t apologize, I liked it,” He said, right against your mouth before hooking his hand around your knee. He pulled your leg back over his hips, turning his frame slightly so his hips pressed against yours. You jumped at the feeling of his hard cock slotting right against your covered cunt. “I liked it so fucking much.”
You pulled him in for a kiss again, letting him grab at you. His palms working over your breast, swiping his fingertips over your nipples through your shirt. Soon he pulled you underneath him, sliding his hand underneath your shirt, gripping at your hips. You spread your legs open to make space for him, feeling how wet you were from your lips spreading with the motion. You almost felt embarrassed, knowing there might be a wet spot but with him wrapping a hand around your throat and bracing you against him, it didn’t matter.
He tightened his lower abdominal muscles, flowing through with the motion so he could rock his hips into you. The drag of his hard dick against your pussy caused a frenzy inside of you. You followed his actions, keeping pace as you rutted against him as well. Although it was supposed to be dry humping, the slick you were accumulating through your shorts was soaking both of you.
Yuuta pulled his hand away from your neck, pushing your shirt up to grab a handful of your breast. You moaned against his mouth, sliding your palm under his shirt. It almost shocked you to feel his hard cut of abs. He sat up, yanking his shirt off. Before you had the chance to admire his physique he was grabbing at the hem of your shorts, yanking them down aggressively along with your panties. You shuddered as the chill hotel air hit your wet pussy.
Yuuta’s gaze was stuck to your exposed skin, transfixed on your slick folds. As you shimmied away from him, trying to hide your apparent arousal he gripped your knees, opening you up more.
“Y-yuuta,” You said, in a shy tone.
“Yeah, baby?” He said, letting go of one leg to pull his cock out. He watched your face, waiting for a response while he stroked himself. He spread his precum along his shaft, steading his breath now that he finally had you underneath him.
“Want you so bad,” You said, shutting your eyes and trembling from the fear of not getting what you want. No, what you need at this moment.
“Fuck,” He whispered before removing the rest of your clothes. The fat tip of his cock slapped against your folds, causing you to jump at the spark that shot up your core. He leaned over, dropping a glob of spit onto your already soaked cunt before he slid his tip up and down your slit. You jumped every time his tip passed over your clit. It was aching and so sensitive. You were basically throbbing for it.
His blunt head pressed into your entrance causing you to suck a deep breath in. He looked at your beautiful flushed face before pressing forward, working himself into you. The pressure of his cock splitting you open caused you to exhale hard. Your stomach caved in with the lack of air in it, hip flexors pulling up and angling your pelvis better for him.
By the time you inhaled again he was fully sheathed inside of you. You tensed your jaw and shut your eyes. Dear fucking god. A gargled moan fell from his lips before you could state your concern.
“You’re so tight, love,” He whimpered. Instead of pulling out, he grinded his hips against yours, just like before, causing you to see stars.
“No,Yuuta, fuck,” you said, struggling to find your words. “You’re just so fucking big. I’m so full, you’re so fucking deep.” He felt drunk off your words, almost possessed as he pulled out slowly, only to press back in, dragging his veiny cock against your spasming walls. Your hands fell wrapped around his biceps as you dared to look down to where you both were conjoined.
You gasped seeing him plunge in and out of you, thrusting his cock with a lazy pace. The hair that adorn his pelvis was soaked and matted to his skin. His veins along his happy trail popped out from the motion. You dragged your gaze up to see him looking down as well. He watched your pretty pussy work to talk all of him in. Your poor clit was swollen and your lips were wet and puffy.
He looked back into your eyes before capturing your lips in a kiss. Although you wanted to rush and feel his tongue on yours, he slowed you both down, teasing you as he worked at you gently. He moved his hands down to hook under your knees, pressing them flat against the mattress, forcing your pelvic area up more.
You yelped at his next thrust, feeling him deeper than before. His cock was pressing against your cervix now. You couldn’t help but clamp down on him, pressing a hand against his lower abdomen so he wouldn’t be able to press so deep.
“This pussy is so fucking good, Y/N. Wanna fuck you forever,” He said against your lips. You couldn’t help but nod in agreement as he confessed more. “You want that? Want this pussy to be mine, baby? Want me to fuck you whenever I want? Want me to cum inside this pretty pussy? Please let me cum inside, baby. Let me breed this pussy,” As he spoke, the words repeated in your head, making you feel desirable to the sorcerer. His raspy tone made more arousal pool into your stomach.
The pressure in your core was wound tighter and tighter with each thrust. You nodded your head to his demands, “Want it,” You said, eyes shut, lost in the feeling of his cock fucking into you. “Want you to cum inside me, please,” You said, almost whispering at the end of your sentence, still shy to admit your attraction to him.
He picked up his pace just enough to set off another wave of tension inside of you. Something snapped, your walls spasming around his cock as your muscles tightened up. You moaned out as you pressed your fingers deeper into his biceps.
“Yuuta!” You cried out, cumming and clamping down on him. His eyes were screwed tight he pressed his hips down, cumming as deep as he possibly could inside of you. You could see his body tense and relax over and over, just like you did a few seconds prior. He slowly moved himself down, resting against you and letting his weight hold you down. He didn’t remove himself from you yet, enjoying the moment with you.
Instead of saying anything you moved your fingers across his back, dragging two fingerstips against his spine, just as he did to you prior, coaxing him into a deeper relaxation.
“Um,” He speaks out, forcing himself awake before it’s too late. You look down at the crown of his head, pushing his hair back for him. “Did you, um, enjoy it.” Your momentary silence made him nervous.
He shot up, looking at you with a flushed face causing you to speak.
“Yuuta, I was soaked through my shorts,” You boldly stated before feeling your cheeks heat up as well. “I-I, Well of course, I liked it.” You said, feeling more nervous now then when he was literally fucking you. He smiled.
“I know you mentioned being a good girlfriend, would you give me the chance to be a good boyfriend to you?” He rested his forehead against yours, leaning down as you uttered a small ‘yes’ before he kissed you.

OPINION: WandaVision, SSSS.Gridman, and the Beautiful Prison of Nostalgia
Tumblr media
Just to warn folks: this article contains spoilers for WandaVision and SSSS.Gridman.
In 2021, in the middle of a pandemic and floundering movie theaters, the most discussed show of the year so far is Marvel's WandaVision. Fans and culture writers have been busy diving deep into what the show is about. Is WandaVision a successful portrait of the process of grief? Does it successfully humanize Wanda, a character who’s so far evaded the spotlight given to characters like Iron Man or Captain America? Is “what is grief but love persevering” a good or a bad line? Where was Mephisto in all this? Most difficult of all: in allowing Wanda some relief and kind words after she brainwashes an entire town into doing exactly what she says, does the show let her off the hook?
Listening to my friends and coworkers argue over this show over the past few weeks reminded me of one of my favorite anime of the past few years — a series that tackled themes of grief, nostalgia, and whether a monster can be redeemed. A series that predates WandaVision by three years and has a sequel coming out next month. That’s right, I’m talking about SSSS.Gridman!
Tumblr media
Like WandaVision, SSSS.Gridman is a show about a girl (Akane) who escapes to a bubble world when life becomes too much for her to bear. She uses special technology to manipulate people’s awareness, and through the power of a mysterious entity known as Alexis Kerib, summons giant monsters (kaiju) to murder those she doesn’t like. Our heroes, a trio of her classmates who join forces with the space cop Gridman to defeat the kaiju endangering their friends, eventually turn their attention to saving Akane, the “god” of their world, from herself. They do this over the course of 12 episodes and many exciting, well-choreographed battles.
While Yuta (Gridman’s friend and partner) is technically the protagonist, Akane quickly steals the show as the most developed and layered character in the series. She’s capable of astonishing violence in the pursuit of her own happiness, but just as easily bruised when her plans fail and her creations turn against her. We see the moments when she regrets her actions, but also the moments where she makes terrible decisions despite knowing their costs. Just like Takeshi, the villain of SSSS.Gridman’s live-action predecessor, Akane is defined by weakness as much as strength. Even when her actions put other people at risk, they are driven as much by anxiety and fear as they are by hate.
Tumblr media
Just like with WandaVision, there was plenty of discussion as Gridman aired about whether or not Akane could be redeemed. Like Wanda, Akane has hurt and even killed many people. At times she even attempts to manipulate them. Yet at the end of the series, when she “opens the door” to Yuta and her friends and escapes Alexis Kerib’s influence, I was overjoyed. How could this be?
Here’s my guess. Like WandaVision, Gridman isn’t just a show that attempts to humanize a villain. It is a show about nostalgia. As each episode of WandaVision is an obsessively detailed homage to American sitcoms, Gridman is a 12-episode love letter to live-action dramas and giant robot shows. Obscure alternate universe Transformers tie-ins, past episodes of Ultraman, Gridman scripts and guidebooks that were never produced — it’s all there, packed in not just by the dedicated staff but presumably through scriptwriter Keichi Hasegawa, himself a legendary Ultraman writer.
Tumblr media
Unlike Takeshi, Akane is a cool, stylish teenage girl. But deep down, she’s as much a geek as Takashi was, fiendishly dedicated to kaiju and robot shows. The kaiju she creates aren’t just a means by which she exerts control over the world, but an expression of her love. When Gridman destroys these kaiju to protect Yuta’s friends, Akane can’t help but take those losses personally. It’s not just the desecration of her favorite hobby. The failure of her creations is a consequence of her own lack of imagination. She can’t imagine any other way to manage her problems than to create a bubble world where everyone loves her.
The trick of SSSS.Gridman is that while Yuta and his friends are the heroes, Akane is the true audience surrogate. How many of us also feel as though we are ostracized nerds with low self-esteem? How many use our favorite shows or games as an escape? In WandaVision, we see how Wanda watches sitcoms as a child as a way to cope with daily uncertainty. There’s nothing wrong with sitcoms; the creators of WandaVision clearly love them, having built such an elaborate homage to them. But if you spend the time watching sitcoms that you could be using to sleep or to eat (or, say, turning a town of people into a sitcom to avoid dealing with the death of your lover) then something will inevitably give.
In Episode 9 of Gridman, Akane traps Yuta and his friends within their dreams in a last-ditch effort to turn them to her side. Each rejects her, choosing their responsibility to their friends rather than their god. At the end of the episode, we see that Akane, herself, is trapped in a dream. Despite holding unlimited power, all she can do is retreat further and further into a shell that she has built out of her own self-loathing. It is a shell that not even a superhero like Gridman can break. In the end, at the very last moment and with the help of her friends, Akane breaks it on her own.
Tumblr media
You could point at other similarities between WandaVision and what SSSS.Gridman did back in 2018, if you really wanted to. For instance, the way that both series (through Vision and Anti) approach the question of personhood and what it means to be a “monster” or a “robot.” You could parallel the efforts of Yuta, Rikka, and their friends to pull Akane out of her hole with the way Monica Rambeau becomes an empowered hero surrogate in WandaVision. If I would point at one way in which Gridman differs from WandaVision, it is how Gridman’s embrace of live-action superhero shows and giant robots better lends itself to a finale where human evil is punched into submission. By comparison, by the time Wanda starts throwing energy balls around in WandaVision, it jars with the sitcom homage and character study of earlier episodes.
All things said, at the end of the day I prefer Ultraman and giant robots punching each other to Cheers and Marvel films. That’s not to say the latter is worse; it’s more a matter of personal taste. Either way, I’m glad that art continues to be made that grapples with the messy contradictions of human behavior. Though I’ll suggest: if you’re looking for genuinely challenging, ahead-of-its-time source material for a Marvel adaptation, X-Statix is right there!
Did you watch WandaVision as it aired? Are you looking forward to SSSS DYNAZENON? Will we ever see an animated adaptation of Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye? Let us know in the comments!

One Piece Birthdays: Honorable Mentions
One Piece has hundreds of characters, and over the past year I’ve celebrated the birthdays of only about a few hundred or so of them. So I’d like to take the time to mention every One Piece character without a birthday. Some don’t have birthdays because they’ve debuted too recently, some have no birthdays because they have been forgotten. Some have no birthdays because we haven’t gotten to that yet, even though they’ve existed for a long time and we remember them. To start off with, I will mention every character that exists within the canon that have names. Some you’ll remember. Some you won’t recognize, but if I showed you a picture of them you’d be like “Oh yeah that guy”. And then some of them you won’t have any recollection of, and I can’t blame you for it. Today, we will honor your memories, and hope that one day, Eiichiro Oda gives you a birthday.

I used the names that they are given on the wiki, as opposed to their Official English names, if they even have one. I did this so that you can simply search their names on the One Piece Wiki and learn about them, if any interest you. However, a couple of them are so obscure that they don’t even have their own pages, in which case you will only be able to fine them here.
Next we will honor all non-canon characters. These characters appeared in filler, movies, specials, OVAs, one-shots, video games, or any other material that was officially made but not part of the manga. These characters are gaurunteed to never get a birthday, and that is a curse they bear. Now some non-canon characters, such as Gion and Tokikake, debut in non-canon and then later appear in canon, making them canon characters, and thus giving them a chance to have a birthday. However, this is such a rare case, that I wouldn’t count on it, especially for non-canon characters that debuted years ago.

Lastly, I want to honor all characters, canon and non-canon, with no names. The majority of these characters are just extras that only appeared in one panel or shot. But there’s a couple that are actually memorable, such as that one guy that was in Spandine’s group, or the masked CP-0 members. Some of these people can actually get names eventually. For example, Don Quixote Mjosgard was a nameless character for the longest time, until in the Reverie he became important and was given a name. I cannot list these nameless characters, as they have no names, but I do still want to honor them, and hope that one day they will be given names and have birthdays.

Anime Update 70
Charlotte - My thoughts on the premiere episode of this series is that this looks to be a really enjoyable quality anime...but I can also kind of already see why this wouldn't catch on with a lot viewers, as it doesn't exceed that level of quality right out the gate. CLANNAD started out with a special sort of intrigue to it and hit it's stride very early in, particularly when the Fuko arc got underway, and Angel Beats! first episode enthralls you to the point of needing to watch on from there. I felt no lasting strong feelings after I'd finished the first episode of Charlotte, and a lot of that had to do with me having seen Maeda's bag of tricks before and done better. The strongest aspect of this series from it's offset would be it's protagonist, Yu Otosaka. In contrast to the gruff but ultimately good natured dickishness of Tomoya Okazaki and the white bread blandness of Yuzuru Otonashi, Otosaka is a complete bastard. His design, his magical eye changing ability, his closeness to his younger sister, and even his hammy villainous mannerisms are eerily identical to Lelouch Vi Britannia, to the point where it seemed weird to hear Yukiatsu's voice coming from him rather than Lelouch's! The most major differences are that Otosaka has always skirted by in life using his possession powers to cheat rather than study and strategize himself, he has more interest in the opposite sex, and he's ultimately a coward when the deck hasn't been pre-set in his favor. But him aside, everyone and everything else feels a bit cliched - the premise is the X-Men type of shit that's done every so often, the Student Council President is Kanade, Yurippe, and Yui all rolled into one, the Vice President has some traits of Hinata and Naoi, the Romantic False Lead is a trope unto herself, and even Otosaka's sister being not very socially adept and having an obsession with stars is reminiscent of Fuko (they literally did the Fuko gag of her freezing up in bliss with stars and sparkles towards the end!). If something doesn't start off sticking with you after it's first credits roll, that can sometimes be an omen that it may not stick the landing either (hello, The Owl House Season 1!)
Dragon Ball - The main action in this episode was dedicated to King Piccolo descending upon Chow City, the capitol of Earth's primary reigning kingdom, just as a big ceremonial event was taking place, to terrorize it, damage some property, kill a bunch of people, and make the leading government officials his captive. And I watched this a day or two before Insurrection Day, so I was still able to properly enjoy it without feeling too uncomfortable! It helps that Piccolo is just such an awesome villain and that Chris Sabat nails both the regality and the menacing demonic quality in his voice. We also got to see Suno again, and I guess she’s a major dog person due to her fangirling over King Furry? And over in Korin Village, Goku and Yajirobe talk with Bora and Upa about why they need to climb Korin Tower. Again.
Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions: Heartthrob - The first episode of the second season, as was expected, centered on Yuta and Rikka now that they're a romantic couple, but with the twist that they're now living together due to Yuta's parents AND Rikka's sister needing to be away for an extended period of time, with only Yuta's younger sister there as additional company. In addition we get even more adorkableness from Rikka, Dekomori being her delightfully off-the-walls hyperactive and crazy self, Kumin trying her hand at telling lame jokes or puns, Nibutani with her hair dyed black for the whole episode for some reason, and Sunohara getting into his delinquent phase that will inevitably get him kicked out and relocated to another school where he and Tomoya will become pals. And at the climax comes another imaginary high energy super powered battle against Toka, with Yuta, Dekomori, and Nibutani assisting Rikka in the fight...and all still getting their asses handed to them. They're clearly setting Toka up as the opponent for Yuta and Rikka to beat by the series’ end. Not much more to say; it’s still wild and crazy, still Chunibyo.
Date A Live - Starting this series honestly felt like a fever dream after I'd got done with the first episode. Like, this setup was just bananas! When the story proper opened with the male MC's younger sister doing this overly upbeat, fetishy shit and even flashing a panty shot at the camera, I was immediately concerned that I was in for some garbage, and introducing the weirdo classmates didn't get me any more invested. But then the "cosmic quake" hits the city, Shido freaks out over his sister who we barely know possibly being in danger, the Spirit girl shows up and threatens his life while assuming he's there to threaten her's, the Super Genius girl shows up in battle armor to fight the Spirit, and everything explodes! That all seemed strange, and then it just kept getting stranger! Shido wakes up on the mobile base of an organization commanded by none other than Kotori, his own sister, who has a complete character 180 into this over-the-top Girl Boss, and she was never Shido's biological sister and was in on this secret mission for years while living with Shido as a cover, and boy does Shido ever underreact to this world altering revelation! Then suddenly he's back in school, but then he meets with the organization in secret to be condescended to by his own kid sister before being told what his purpose is to be now via a Dating Sim-like video (which I guess is where Kotori adopted her little sister persona from?). He's tasked with finding Spirits, dating them, and making them fall in love with him to the point where they will willingly let him take away their virginity...I mean "seal their powers." And then suddenly he’s with Origami in the school halls, and Origami’s all “By the way, a Spirit killed my parents, so I will make them all pay!” And then the credits roll! Yeah, the episode just stops there before I was able to really process what was going on! It was all so DUMB. But I got started on it, and supposedly it gets better, so I’m stuck with it.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - This familiar favorite was also a notably weak start to a really stupid show that threw a lot of dumb shit at me, but at least it had the semblance of a coherent plot! Going back to this, it really was the worldbuilding, action, and plot momentum on display here that made this watchable, since you don't really get a lot out of the characters at this point. If I was watching this totally blind, the only two characters who'd interest me would be main protagonist Lelouch Vi Britannia (the guy who Yu Otosaka resembles) and Britannia's young mad scientist, Lloyd Asplund. No one else made me give a shit. Like, C.C seems intriguing but as far as you can tell, she dies passing the Geass onto Lelouch. Kallen's just an attractive looking terrorist/rebel with a cause who has some really silly dialogue (the "this badass mother" line), Rivalz is kind of an irritation, Milly and Shirley seem flighty and generic, Suzaku's just the bland Good Guy, and the antagonists? Prince Clovis and the Britannian troops who answer to him? Them being so broadly depicted as cartoonishly cruel, brutal, apathetic or even sadistic scumbags was honestly the dumbest part. Like, there are ways to show us that a totalitarian regime and it's military is bad other than making them act in ways that I find it inconceivable to believe they would be permitted to act. At least the ending delivered, with Lelouch commanding the Britannian troops to all shoot themselves dead, being awed by the power he now possesses, and then going “Well, then...” with a delightfully wicked smirk. We’re bearing witness to the rise of a supervillain, which promises some good fun times ahead.
When They Cry: Umineko - It’s my first time actually watching this anime adaptation that never got renewed for anything more after this first season, contrasting with Higurashi which got a shit-ton of anime content. Remember what I said about first episodes on Charlotte? Yeah, it applies here ten times more. I found myself almost totally disengaged with this anime, and I say almost because the intrigue of what’s going on with this rich family quarreling over a secret stash of gold held my attention well enough. But if you’re doing an Agatha Christie And Then There Were None style locked room murder mystery on a remote island, this is how you do NOT want to adapt it. I watched BBC’s excellent three episode miniseries adaptation of that Christie story last year and part of what made it really take off with me was in how it executed it’s build-up, how we gradually got to know the most basic things about the characters before the plot kicked into high gear. This episode moved things along way too fast and I knew and felt nothing for these characters. The protagonist, Battler, made himself immediately off-putting to me with his perving over “big tits” and so comedically threatening to sexually harass his female cousin only to be met with a slapstick whack on the head for it by the angry PMSing girl, isn’t that just hi-larious? The cousin herself has little but her looks to go by, the other most prominent guy is a nonentity, there’s one guy who looks distractingly feminine, the pwecious little girl was just annoying, and that girl’s mother at one point abuses the shit out of her daughter for no good reason (Hinamizawa Syndrome doesn’t apply here, so don’t even!) right in front of the other characters who of course do nothing to stop it because “family matter!”, and then later that same mother is freaking out over the kid being lost and acting like she really truly loves her? Honestly, they should’ve made this one a slow build and saved the stuff about the Golden Witch and the little girl’s flower for next time. But they don’t, so it ends at a very abrupt place where the girl says she saw Beatrice (who I guess is like this story’s Oyashiro except we know how she looks like from the start and will be meeting her shortly). And on top of all that, the animation is just cheap and atrocious looking. Ugh, talk about underwhelming and unpleasant. Show us the Big Bad Witch next time and maybe it’ll pick up steam!
Magic Knight Rayearth - It's a new start to this show, with a new OP and ED to signify it. The new OP wasn't nearly as good as the first one, but the trade-off is that the ED is much better. After a strange nonsequitur nightmare that Hikaru has of a shadowy Maleficent-esque figure who threatens to destroy Cephiro and conquer all worlds (Melodee Spevack should've voiced Ultimecia, I will die on that hill!), it opens up with the girls still traumatized over how their adventure as the Magic Knights in Cephiro ended, and we get to spend time with them as they find comfort in the friends and family (brothers plus Hikari the dog for Hikaru, parents for Umi, and a close friend for Fuu). When the three of them get together at Tokyo Tower for a meeting to discuss their thoughts and feelings regarding what happened in Cephiro, the same light from before just happens to show up and transport them back to Cephiro, which is now a dark, rotten world in total shambles. But it was Emeraude who summoned them last time, and she's dead, so how is this possible? As Master Clef explains the situation to the returned Magic Knights, a big ass airship belonging to a foreign nation approaches with intent to invade Cephiro and take all that it has left! Somebody, call the Rune Gods!
AMC: Gintama - My AM Cartoon this time was Gintama, with it’s two-part series premiere. It didn’t seem like the kind of show I’d want to binge watch or watch on a routine basis since it’s a notorious long runner that supposedly spoofs shonen manga/anime while also encapsulating the essence of all genres of anime and TV storytelling in general. If this is a show you took a passing glance at, you would not know what to make of it. You kind of need to actually see it for yourself to really get what it is, and it is pure, raw, madcap, balls-to-the-walls, unrestrained by any fourth wall, shameless Saturday Morning Cartoon silliness to the max! Like, this was just so utterly catastrophically out there and doing whatever the fuck it wanted to do that it crossed a line into legit awesome and I enjoyed the heck out of it! You’ve got samurais and kung fu girls and aliens and secret police and robots and doomsday machines being set to destroy “the capital” (I actually DID watch this one after Insurrection Day, so that part wasn’t so fun) all occupying one setting as a fairly basic story is told, and it should not have worked nearly as well as it did. Aside from the constant fourth wall jokes where the characters are well aware it’s all a ridiculous show and frequent references to other stories even from other media, the cleverest set piece to make it work is that the three displaced anime protagonists who make up Odd Jobs Gin literally state they are in the business of “doing anything” for payment. ANYTHING. Anything at all, even if that anything turns out to be just about everything! Once this has been established, the series has opened itself up to a world of limitless possibilities and can get away with indulging in as much of them as it desires without it feeling like a stretch or a cheat. So it’s definitely a show that I’m not going to be at all opposed to coming back to every now and then just to see what crazy adventure is in store next time.
AND
Love Live! & Love Live Sunshine!! - I rewatched the first episodes of both series’ back to back just to compare and contrast them. And I stand by my verdict that Sunshine had the better premiere, the better cast, and the overall better series between the two (and the better songs from the offset - like, “Susume -> Tomorrow” is a nice song and all, but “Hand In Hand” just rocks so much harder!), but they were both fun to revisit. None of these school idol brand-building series’ belong in the great masterpieces of anime or anything, so it might be easy to take for granted just how good they really are on their own merits. It’s not a franchise I would’ve seen myself going for, yet I fucking love these anime. I think my memories of watching them both last year (and starting the first series well before all the horrors of 2020 made themselves apparent!) and the fact that there are still some tough times to get through this year before things can start looking up again have only increased my fondness for them. They’re largely light-hearted and goofy affairs, with tons of emotional sincerity and the whole M.O of a school idol being to bring people together, spread joy, create warm feelings and emit their own radiance to inspire others to go out and “shine” just like them seeming even more appealing now than it did years ago. What Love Live! is selling, I’m unapologetically buying, because dammit, we need more of it in life.
