I haven’t read Percy Jackson since I was 11, is it really that bad?
fhufehjh not bad just like..... u can tell rick riordan hasnt really thought too hard abt the history in any serious way and just wanted to make a goofy story abt kids fooling around which. is fine. i suppose. its all just very white american ig (which is probably why the series was so successful in the first place). The goofy 12 yr old kid bits are still enjoyable I think but the more 'serious' parts where u find that the kids are being framed as "protectors of western civilization" by their wise old teachers (rolling my eyes SO HARD my god) or whatever falls apart under scrutiny. Its all very weird and u can tell that riordan didnt really think about what ANY of that means in the real world. esp visible in that convo between luke and percy at the end of lightning thief i think- theyre just parroting words taught to them by their respective teachers (chiron and kronos) and that Would be an interesting pov to pursue (esp in a coming of age story i think) but like?? its played straight and 12 yr old percy jackson wants to go hunting for the seventeen yr old kid who literally taught him all he knows about sword fighting bbdjndfdjm
ig now that im older i can see that the hero's goal in pjo has always jus been to make sure things stay as they are, even though ppl like luke have legit reasons to be mad. telling starving ppl they should ask for food nicely. just feel like im too old for that now lmao thats all.
i mean there have always been complaints abt riordans ignorance abt race in his books but like- when u really scrutinize his work abt what its really saying even before he introduced characters that weren't white its like yeah that was inevitable.
