MBC Dance Contest Results!
After the announcement of the contest, hundreds of people uploaded their videos to YouTube in hopes of winning the mysterious prize. Something coming from such a big broadcasting station must mean they won’t be leaving with just a pat on the back. Between all of those who applied, only three of them get a special post on the station’s official social media. Congratulations to the three winners below!
KIM CHUNGHA ( @rkchungha )
KIM YUGYEOM ( @rkkyg )
KIM JINHWAN ( @rkjinhwan94 )
The real prize of the competition, however, will only be shared with those invited for it—which is not restricted to only the three winners above. A total of 10 people from those who signed up for the competition received an e-mail from MBC specifying the next part of this process. Everyone should already be aware that MBC is the station that hosts one of the biggest end-of-the-year music festivals, the Gayo Daejejun, on December 31st. The top 10 contestants from the competition will get to appear on the festival for a special stage, and the three winners will receive their own special roles. Check out the other 7 contestants who’ll get to participate below!
SON HYEJOO ( @rkxsnh )
KIM SEUNGHUN ( @rkseunghun )
KIM HYOJIN ( @hyojinrk )
KIM JIBEOM ( @rkjibeom )
PARK SIYEON ( @siyeonrk )
IM YOONA ( @rkyoona )
JEON SOMIN ( @jsominrk )
The ten of them will all be gathered in a dance studio in the Gangnam district as described in the e-mail received starting on December 21st. The group of dancers will not take part in just any type of stage but, instead, will be the opening act for the second part of the festival.
The show will start with a solo stage from each of the three winners in the following order: Kim Chungha; Kim Jinhwan; Kim Yugyeom. They’ll each have 30 seconds to show off their dance skills to the public. They may choreograph it themselves or ask for help from one of the dance instructors at the dance studio. Keep in mind that this should be public friendly. Once they’re all done, the 10 contestants will gather around Yugyeom for a final group dance, which will follow the dance seen in this video, but cut as below:
( 0:00 - 0:23 ) Yugyeom center
( 0:24 - 0:42 ) Jinhwan center
( 2:53 - 3:13 ) Chungha center
The specific training dates will be during the weekends leading up to the shoe (21st, 22nd, 28th, 29th), but those involved may request to come in on other days for extra practices. The 10 contestants should arrive early on December 31st at the Gayo location by their own means.
Apart from this, the 10 contestants will also receive prize money for their efforts. The three winners (Chungha, Yugyeom, Jinhwan) will receive 500k won (around 429 dollars), while the others will receive 300k won (around 257 dollars).
For +2 DANCE you may write a 250+ words solo or a four-post thread with another contestant about your muse’s preparation for the special stage. For +2 DANCE OR CHARISMA, you may write a 250+ words solo about the day of the Gayo performance. Please tag all related posts with #rkmbcgayo.  You have until midnight EST at the end of Tuesday, December 31st, to make your posts. Threads may be continued after the deadline, but points will no longer be received.
For completing all the requirements, you may receive +1WK HIP HOP ACHIEVEMENT to your muse as soon as everything is posted. You are free to tally up this achievement on your blog and, once your muse gets signed, you will have to add this to their base form as an achievement previously won through MBC Dance Contest.

    ・  MBC DANCE CONTEST UPLOAD   ━━━━         ›  DON’T CALL ME ANGEL   ₊
to say yuna’s father had reservations ever since her stint on the mgas was an understatement. sure, yuna had thought he’d get over it sooner or later. but she didn’t think he’d be so against it up ‘til now -- she was still enrolled at hanlim, a place that cultivated the next, brightest stars on their generation so it’s come to be expected that yuna would find herself back onto her star-filled path sooner than later.
what yuna doesn’t expect is her father, in all his not-so-stern glory, sitting her down the day after her birthday with his doubts about the mbc dance contest flyer he had seen loitering by the floor of her bed.
“you were a wreck after you were eliminated, what if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to again?”
yuna deadpans, a sudden sourness filling her mouth. “what -- you don’t believe in me, dad?”
it hurts, yes -- to be reminded of her blunder. after putting it all behind her, yuna had thought she’d been renewed. that after months of contemplating what would be her next step, for this to come falling into her lap just days before her sixteenth birthday, yuna could only deduce it as something called fate.
“it’s not fair for you to be treating me like some baby! jessica and yoona unni were able to send in their videos, what makes me so different?”
just because she was the youngest of her family -- didn’t mean she liked being babied. if her own siblings were allowed to join the contest, why couldn’t she? her arms stay crossed as she leans further into her seat, staring dejectedly at her father as he stared right back ; grimness filling in the lines that had grown around his face in the last few months.
“i just don’t want you to get hurt, yuna.”
“i won’t, i promise.”
not like it’s a promise she can keep -- but she crosses both her fingers behind her back, just in case.
                                                     ━━━━━━━━━━
she’s not born with it. that is for sure, from her experience at mgas, to revisiting video upon video of her performances, one could tell from one look that yuna had a long way to go when it came to dancing. but it didn’t negate the fact that -- despite her missteps and rigid movements -- she looked good. and that’s what mattered, right?
( at least that’s what yuna liked to think )
but opinions change and somehow needing something to stimulate her interests back into its right path, she had signed up for some dance classes. to fix the rigidity, to up her visual fluidity and somehow translate it practically into dance.
it didn’t help that the ahjummas that lived next door would not let her live down the embarrassment that was getting eliminated so early on in the competition. she wanted to be remembered but not for losing. even for yuna, there were some limitations to negative press. and that had been hers.
she had grown dim, and while she didn’t love the arts, didn’t feel any romanticized attachment to it -- she enjoyed them enough to want to still try. a huge sigh as she stares longingly at the advertisement playing right before another one of the choreography videos she watches, mbc’s flashy logo appearing right before the dance contest details and the fast-approaching deadline end the ad.
ugh. there was no choice, was there?
and while she didn’t love dancing, nor did she believe it was her god-given birthright to somehow be good at it -- with her birthday coming in just a few days, and the deadline for the dance contest falling close behind -- yuna had to figure out something, quick, before her time was up.
                                                  ━━━━━━━━━━      PRESS PLAY .
she scours the web for a choreography that benefitted her in two ways: befitting of her skills -- figuratively speaking -- and was aesthetically pleasing and powerful enough to make a mark. because if she wasn’t remembered, what was the point?
if yuna had a say in what she wanted to portray herself as -- she wanted it to be impactful, memorable and well-ingrained in the minds of her viewers. she wasn’t a youtuber by any means. if tiktok or vine counted -- she’d call herself more of an influencer, than anything else.
but with the few videos she’s put up, and the following from her other social media accounts, somehow the subscriber list had grown to a point that yuna knew to be anxious for whatever she put up next. as a young girl who made a point to heavily ignore the critics on her comment section, she was also still a young girl with a sensitivity streak that rivaled no other.
( which adds to the reason as to why her father feared for what to come )
but it’s something she can’t have weighing her down.
the moment she turns on that camera to perform the choreography she had spent days searching for ( and even a few more learning ) there’s no turning back.
would this make up for her blunder on the mgas? probably not.
but it was worth a try.
kyle hanagami’s choreographies are challenging. they require a skill that yuna does not have but she fesses up all of what she can manage in favor of star quality -- and that was just what kyle’s choreographies all held. a spunk of individuality and rebelliousness that yuna felt was so deeply embedded into her own being that even her father couldn’t help but agree that it had yuna written all over the steps the moment she had shown him the choreography she was going to cover.
relying on confidence alone was risky but she thinks she’s improved enough in the last six months to shake the nerves that pelter through until the very tip of her nerve-endings. it wasn’t like she couldn’t just edit out her mistakes, right?
( or would that be cheating? )
the beat is heavy in the dance room, secluded among the rest as some of her peers loom behind the phone camera to watch her from the screen ; making sure she stays in frame rather than running off the side. it’s happened before when she had tested the lighting ( and while she didn’t have any professional equipment, and she couldn’t really trust her friends to hold the phone steady enough -- this would have to do ) and found that she wasn’t even in frame for the first 30 seconds of the song ( a majority of the choreo considering how long it actually was: if she recalls it was barely a minute ) .
it’s a lot of attitude -- she realizes, as she goes through the motions in her head before she signals for the song to play. it’s a performance of not only her body, but her face and she feels it reflexively stiffen at the sound of ariana grande’s chorus fading to welcome miley cyrus’s verse.
it’s definitely more sharp moves than any of the other choreographies she had practiced before -- a lot more hitting the beat of the song, never a misstep -- something yuna realizes she does often if she feels herself quickening in pace rather than keeping in tempo.
and unlike exo’s namesake song, yuna had taken ages to make sure she didn’t mess up her own tempo with the song.
she breathes in deeply right before the beat jumps and she’s sauntering forward ; fast movements ensue for sharper movements. so fast that she feels the whip of blonde locks against the nape of her neck ( a part of her regrets not tying her hair up ) as she spins and her arms are moving this way and that -- a languid motion sped up to match the rhythm of the song as she crouches then rises.
as fingers run through her hair ; she feels the smile finally break -- the breath in her lungs ripped out of her as she’s moving from one side of the frame to another. each step bringing another motion to ripple through her features. she grows in confidence as the lyrics finally hit its core -- a nail to the coffin, empowerment stemming from the very breadth of her hair to every smile she flashes at the camera. the haughtiness in her expression running through her fingertips as she moves in the way her girls’ hip hop teacher had taught them just a week ago -- sensual, but powerful.
it didn’t need to be sexy -- not for yuna, no. she just wanted it to be impactful.
memorable.
because wasn’t that the point of it all -- just as she turns one last time to face the camera, as the song fades, and her smile is dripping with confidence, chest heaving with the need to breathe --
( if she could help it ) yuna just wanted to be remembered for trying.
( and not failing, this time )

[MBC Dance Contest] Pink Slip ft. Anthony Pavel + ‘2 U’
uploaded by: hye_o published on: 08 December 2019 description:… read more
It was exhilarating to be able to explore one's passion and receive tremendous support from both the people she cared about and strangers thought. Other's opinions did not usually deter her from doing what she wants, it was a different kind of 'good' when she does receive a little 'tender lovin and care' with whatever it is she decides to do. So when her streaming audiences (within the gaming community) had taken so well with her first youtube dance video a week ago, Olivia stands by her word and creates a different channel for her to express this part of her life.
Instantly she gained half of her following from her loyal audience and some more from random strangers. A few who did mention a dance contest that she should 'totally join'. Olivia's instant response was a snort- in a rather, reflexive manner- but then eventually gave into the idea. Because why not, there was no harm in joining, it couldn't be any worst than her experience with the MGAs. She blames her competitive nature rather than the actual truth which was she really did enjoy her time in the MGAs. Despite her vehemence exterior against it.
Making up the choreography itself had not been that hard. She sought out help from one of her friends within the SNU dance society to add in a thought or two. Unlike her, he was a more experienced and talented dancer-however, he always did say that she simply had an inborn raw talent- so he was able to point out where she could execute a step differently or wait on another count. Thankful for the help, she gave him a shout out and free dinner later on.
The whole experience had been similar to her initial video. Except in this one, it felt a little bit personal. She dances with the same grace and power behind every move. She feels the music and the rhythm to her core, knowing that this dance was specifically made by her. This was her take and interpretation of the song. To the music and it's the message. At the end of it all, she was actually quite grateful for participating, mostly because just like the MGAs it brought a new perspective into this growing obsession of hers.

PSIYE00N UPLOADED !
[ MBC DANCE CONTEST ] + WJSN - SECRET  PUBLISHED DECEMBER 16TH, 2019.
an upload on psiye00n without jeno??? it’s a christmas miracle! should I do more dance covers? is my outfit cute? asking all the important questions... anyway, enjoy x
truthfully, she doesn’t know why she’s doing this. to prove a point? to say she’s tried, at the very least? she doesn’t quite know why she’s doing this outside either — it’s fucking cold even if also a lot more spacious than the interior of her and her grandmother’s home. perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t wear shorts, but that would just ruin the aesthetic, you know?
the video itself starts by fading in from black like all her others. this time, instead of her face ridiculously close to the lens or her voice cutting through the silence, she’s as far back as she can be without disappearing into the background. the music starts gently, building up until she begins to dance.
she starts just before the first chorus at the start of seola’s line, giving herself a chance to adjust rather than jumping straight into the heat of the choreography and risking missing the first beat. of course, if she did, she could just restart, but it barely seems worth the hassle to cut out a few seconds of strutting towards the camera before her real entry for the competition starts. to get the most out of her limited time frame, she follows whoever is moving most in the choreography at any given moment, using any spare time to move about as if in a formation, making sure she’s still properly framed in the shot and doesn’t appear idle for too long.
'secret’ is a choreography she’s known for a while but hadn’t practised in almost equally as long. she’s rusty at first, forgets bits here and there. she doesn’t dance as much as she sings ( it’s a little difficult to do more than wiggle your hips as you bake, but your voice is fair game, even in her work’s kitchen with the other staff around ), but she works hard at it when she does. perhaps it’s a little too fiercely sometimes that siyeon dedicates herself to short term goals, to hobbies and interests. a perfectionist in the kitchen, long nights rehearsing for this cover to the point of exhaustion— even in many of her friendships she tends to be easily overwhelming. she doesn’t realise it, but it’s likely that regardless, she’d argue the point of half arsing anything anyway. why even bother if you aren’t going to put your all into it! she’d excuse, to justify the bags under her eyes the camera doesn’t catch from such a distance ( to put her full body on view; wouldn’t want to miss that footwork! ). when she stays up all night baking, she’s sluggish the next day, but today, she’s sharp, smooth, determined — at least for the ninety seconds she needs to be.
recording videos in public doesn’t usually faze siyeon. she’s gotten enough strange looks from the older generation whilst vlogging to last her a lifetime but the few eyes glancing at her in the cold of the morning on their ways to, what she assumes to be, work makes her already pink cheeks burn a little brighter. between the bitter air biting at them and the embarrassment of being watched so unashamedly, her fingers are trembling a little as she curls them into a fist just before the chorus. there’s so much focus in this choreography on her hands that she hopes it doesn’t show in the video — she hadn’t noticed it in any of her previous recordings and tests, though her phone screen obviously isn’t as generous a size as the laptop at home she’ll edit on later.
through the following verse, she keeps a smile on her face the best she can; one that’s not too enthusiastic, as if she’s performing the happiest and bubbliest of summer anthems, but enough that she’s at least not dancing to an angst-filled ballad either. it’s a little smug, as if she knows she’s good and she does. she’s good, not the best, but strong. she wouldn’t hold up against anyone who dances more frequently, and she certainly couldn’t choreograph anything herself, but given some music and a reference video ( and couple weeks; dance isn’t her priority and she isn’t the fastest learner by herself ), she could hold herself up against other trainees, she thinks.
( or maybe it’s just her inflated ego. )
the song is fun to her despite her usual taste being a lot less energetic in beat. acoustic versions of songs were usually more her scene, but every so often, she’d vibe with a song like this — smooth, fun, vibrant in a way that isn’t obnoxious or overdone. besides, how could she not get behind the pretty special effects in the music video? and the cute white t-shirts and denim shorts combos in the dance practice?
she finishes just before the chorus starts again; the one right before the bridge. she’s pushing it to the very last second of the ninety she’s given but she doesn’t care. she isn’t in this to win it, she doesn’t expect to. maybe all along it had been to motivate her. she’d been meaning to film more covers, vocal and dance, for a while, but until now, until the morning of the competition’s deadline, she hadn’t found herself sitting down ( or going out ) to do so. who is she proving a point to, then? the ceos she’s still a little bitter towards or herself? that despite everything, she could do this? she can dance, sing, rap, like she believes herself to? or the world? that park siyeon is a force to be reckoned with?
even as the video fades back to black and recommendations pop up over the player, she doesn’t know.

[MBC DANCE CONTEST ] + MOOMOOMA - LIP
5000 mina
NEW UPLOAD!
[the full ver a.k.a credits] [only outfit]
after having posted two dance covers from convex, she decided that her entry for the dance contest should be something different. yes, it was girl group related.
honestly, had it not been for the overwhelming attention from her boom boom cover, she probably wouldn’t be as determined to join this contest. she didn’t post it as early as some other coverists did, but she managed to at least post it in less than a week from when it was released. that was something, right? and had it not been for her recording it at the top of some mall parking lot hours before it opened, making awkward eye contact with each passing car that was searching for a place to put their car, she wouldn’t have even thought that she could be able to do this and get attention from it.
it was cold. it was awkward. but in the end, if she was able to get attention on the internet from that little bit of suffering, who says she wouldn’t be able to do this?
instead of going outside to record her covers, however, she decides to stay in the comfort of her home while her parents were not around. she didn’t tell anyone she was thinking of joining this. it was frankly because she didn’t think she needed to. she didn’t care whether her parents had anything to say against it or whether her friends would give her advice on what to do for her own performance. she thought about telling daniel, but she thought against it. the last time he didn’t tell her something “huge”, he became a trainee as a result of it all. (sure there were a few bumps in the road, but she can still beg him to get her a signed convex album at the end of the day so…)
though her parents weren’t home, she was in a bit of a time crunch. she made sure that the guest room was clean enough to be a good recording space for her. since she wasn’t boujee on her own, she had to settle for some natural lights as well as the lighting that the room provided her with. perhaps one day she would be able to afford box lights, but today was, unfortunately, not the move.
she’s lucky that the time limit was just 90 seconds because that meant she could learn a choreography quickly in order to turn in the video right before the deadline. though she’s a natural procrastinator (who isn’t these days?), she wants to make sure she gets a good shot. if anyone does this song before she does as an entry, she knows that she’ll probably have a less likely chance of winning. she did not want to let this cuteass look go to waste by being compared to someone else. that’d be a nightmare.
not only did she not have much to learn for the video, but she also actually had time to teach herself the moves rather than put it off and stress about it on the due date. since csats are over and she’s already turned in her apps, all she really needed to do now was wait to see what her future will become. if she were to go on her application portal for seoul national again, she was sure she would still see the familiar “waitlisted” on her application. so rather than stressing over that, she went back to dancing more often in order to get the negative vibes away.
that’s why she’s here. maybe unlike that dumb school, she could be able to get an answer that determines where her life will go. whether it be the same old life she has been living before or one that was no different from her daydreams, at least mbc could let her know where she’d go.
like her past few covers, she records with the same dslr camera she’s used before on the same tripod that has been there since her adore u cover. however, like boom boom, she was doing this cover on her own. she wasn’t a huge fan of mamamoo moomooma, but she wouldn’t deny that “hip” lip was a goodass song. it carried the badass energy that mina basically wanted to become, not to mention the choreography was made by the lia kim and minny park. that’s already a win in her book since she was basically in love with their dances.
with the help of garageband, she was able to make a good audio for the parts of the choreography she wanted to cover for the video. it’s for moves that she thought looked impressive enough for her to be able to impress not only the audience but herself as she dances to them. whenever she does cool moves, she feels a little more badass than she already was prior. though she wished the dance break in the bridge could’ve gone a little harder, she knew that she was going to have fun with doing the rap part in the bridge. her lip-syncing should be enough to fool people into thinking she looks like she could rap.
though it’s more than one take, she still tries her best in dancing as if she was THE main bitch on the block. that was the main message of the song, anyway. even if other people are against what you do, you should still continue being the person you are. you should own that. FUCK THE HATERS! the fact that she was dancing to a song about that made her so excited.
as she finishes her last take with the thought of no mistake, she turns off the music, turns off her camera, and takes the sd card out of it to put into her laptop. it was the same old editing process with the same old cheap editor, but she was willing to find a way to make it look as good as it could possibly be. it’s not just for her rising amount of subscribers. it’s for a broadcasting channel, too.

yeahyein has uploaded a new video : [ MBC Dance Contest ] JUN HYOSEONG - INTO YOU !
Tumblr media
link to choreo, performing 00:30 - 01:58 / outfit.
yein is a born dancer ... or so she says. she likes to downplay her training and history because she thinks it makes her seem more effortless and cool than she really is. when it comes to competitions, it’s extra important to yein that her carefully constructed image shines through.
her song choice reflects that - jun hyoseong’s into you. it’s a track that’s sexy but still cool and still has power. there’s a lot of other songs she could have chosen to cover, but this is the one that suits yein’s own personal style best. it’s fun, but still powerful, something that too many sexy dances are lacking in, in yein’s not so humble opinion.
she’s tucked away in a free studio at soundbox. it’s one of her days off, no make up to paint on people’s faces or dance classes to teach, so yein is able to focus on getting the perfect take. she’s wearing a chic outfit that she thinks is the perfect blend of yein and hyoseong’s stage outfits. she’s always been partial to blazers, after all. she’s not starting until 30 seconds in, so she uses that time at the start to flip around her newly dusty blonde hair and settle into the performance. she’s still getting used to her new hair colour, which today is half tied up. hopefully it will help her stand out.
yein does a few takes, stopping between them to examine the video footage and clean up her lines. it’s the eighth take that she’s finally happy with. yein makes her way back to her apartment and edits the video just a little bit, trimming off the dead seconds at the start and end of the final take. her thumbnail is simply into you in a pretty, cursive font, with mbc dance cover contest written in the top right corner, all framing a cute picture of yein throwing up some peace signs that she posed for at the start of filming. lastly, she writes her video’s description;
hello! here’s my entry for mbc’s dance cover contest. i hope you all enjoyed, sorry it’s been a while since i last posted a dance cover.
xoxo yein
yein watches her video one more time, hating it more with each passing second. at the very end, she closes her eyes and forces herself to forget it, even though she knows it’s good, at the very least. eyes still shut, she clicks upload and pushes her macbook off her lap and onto her bed, closing it rather violently. no going back now.

[ MBC Dance Contest ]  Jennie - Solo
0:00 - 1:00 & 2:15 - 2:45
Dancing had always been a hobby of hers. It was something she found fun and enjoyable but had never put in as much effort towards dancing that she did with her singing and acting. Naturally, working in musical theatre meant that she had to dance, but it was never anything intense and hardcore. It was all part of the job. Sure, she uploaded dance covers and sometimes went all out in the clubs, but it had never been something she thought of doing. To Yoona, her voice was her most valuable asset.
Yoona’s family were still touchy over recent events, but more importantly, the fact that she didn’t get signed and her cousin did. She didn’t blame Moonbok nor did she harbour any harsh feelings towards him, unlike her father. He was still her Bokkie and her favourite cousin and she was so proud of how far he had come. Im Yoona would always be Moonbok’s number one supporter. Her time would come. It had taken her a lot of sleepless nights full of tears and negative thoughts before she realised that it just was not her time and she was thankful. She could work on herself more and wait until next time.
Her father, however, had other plans and when he had heard about a dance contest, he had immediately sent Yoona the information, telling her to enter. She didn’t expect to get anywhere with her entry, she just entered to please her father. The one thing you didn’t want to do was disappoint Yoona’s father.
She had never figured out her style of dancing nor had she attended many lessons. The dancing she did was either self-taught, learned from covers, or taught during rehearsals. She had never done any serious dance competitions and she knew she was competing against professionally trained dancers. If she didn’t get her hopes up then she wouldn’t be so upset when she loses, right?
She had spent some time at home browsing YouTube and trying to figure out what cover she wanted to do. It had taken some time (and a coin toss or two) before she decided upon a song and dance. It wasn’t a complicated choreography which meant that she could focus on nailing the moves and facial expressions needed. Yoona set about learning the dance moves.
When she had a break during rehearsals a few days later, Im Yoona found a quiet spot with sufficient space and lighting to film in. She had brought her camera and tripod with her and quickly set it up. She didn’t have a lot of time, so she wanted to get it right. She had decided to try different outfits to see what worked best for the cover and what didn’t look good on camera. She needed to change for her musical, so it was perfect. She would record multiple versions of the dance and edit it later.
The song was fun and catchy and something that she enjoyed which made dancing to it even easier. Once she was sure she was ready she started the recording and music and began dancing. The dance was cute for all but ten seconds and then it turned fierce. The feel of the music and dance reminded her of a villain so that’s what she pretended to be. Who said one couldn’t roleplay?
The movements were quick and precise mixed with slow and soft. The dance was about attitude, which was something she wasn’t sure she had. Still, she tried to pretend that she had the right attitude for the dance. Throughout the dance, she reminded herself of the moves.
Arm, arm, leg, hip, shake, arm, arm.
She was glad that she hadn’t chosen a harder and more complex song. This seemed to suit her well. She lip-synced as she danced along to the choreography for fun. She recorded a few more times I various outfits before she felt happy enough with what she had. She would edit and upload it once she was finished.
Her YouTube channel only had so many subscribers because she posted a lot of vocal covers and behind the scenes videos of her rehearsals and such. Still, she was thankful for those who subscribed and watched her videos. Yoona had edited the ‘costume changes’ smoothly and she was proud of herself for that. She decided on the 90 seconds she would use and edited it together. She watched it back a few times to make sure she was happy with everything before she uploaded it to her channel.
She told herself not to stress so much and have fun and that’s what she had done. She knew she wasn’t going to get far in this competition, and for the first time, she didn’t care.

[ MBC Dance Contest ] + Freddie Dredd - Cha Cha
Nana Jaemin uploaded a new video !
Description: Jaemin, better known as Nana, here! Since I only have 90 seconds to show off my dance skills among a sea of other people, I decided to go with this relatively unknown bop. Enjoy!
Jaemin hasn’t formally danced before. The last time he brought up the idea of taking dance classes to his mom, she exploded on him so the idea of dancing formally is somewhat of a fear for him. However, when MBC announced a dance contest for anyone over sixteen years old, he can’t help but give in and at least try to get some practice in. After all, if he really wants to be an idol, he’s going to have to learn at some point how to do hip-hop moves that are sharp and clean, rather than his current sloppy attempts. With only about a week to come up with something, Jaemin’s mind had been on overdrive thinking of not only a song but how to at least make the dance moves he picked up from college parties and TikTok look sharper than most people.
Focusing on the dance is most important to him so Jaemin quickly picks an artist he’s been listening to lately, Freddie Dredd. Dredd’s an edgy rapper with vulgar, annoying lyrics but his beats always are unique and sometimes sample something more fun than the actual song. After listening to a couple, he decides to go with “Cha Cha”, as it has the most versatility for him to work with. The intro starts off with a bossa nova sample that mentions dances like the “hula” and the “cha cha.” These dances aren’t hard and can add some humor to his dance; he doesn’t want to take this thing too seriously. The sample merges into Freddie’s verse. He figures this is when he can try to attempt some actual hip-hop moves, as the 90 seconds perfectly ends with the verse and another instance of the bossa nova sample. At home, Jaemin cuts the song to the 90 seconds he needs for his dance sample. For four days, Jaemin goes to the SKKU dance practice rooms and gets ready for “show day.”
Once he feels confident with his song and dance, Jaemin gets his props set up and checks out his outfit in the mirror. For props, he managed to find some blue LED string lights he can scatter throughout the back of the dance room he’s reserved on campus earlier in the week. He hangs them up haphazardly like a spider web, giving the cute lights a more ominous look. For his outfit, he contrasts the blue lights with a bright orange jacket and black jeans, with one leg accented by neon stripes by his ankle. He even did his hair and put in earrings into his usually empty piercings. Rather than people focus on his dancing, he hopes they focus on his look. After setting up his Bluetooth speaker to his phone and placing his camera on the tripod, he hits the record button. Instead of stopping between takes, he decided earlier to keep the song on loop and cut the take to the best performance.
He does ten iterations and feels like he hasn’t quite gotten it perfect. When the song starts again, he flashes a smile and dances the hula for a brief second before doing a purposefully silly, upbeat cha cha, which is just him swaying his hips as he steps back and forth while moving his hands to match the flow. As the sample fades, so does his smile and dancing. With a fierce face, he breaks into the hip-hop section. He pops and rolls his body to the lyrics. The lyrics accelerate, as does his moves. When Dredd breaks into a sing-song style, Jaemin sways back and forth, aware of the sharpness of his shoulders, until it transforms back into the intense arm and leg movements. He aggressively points at the camera at one point, while doing a running-man-esque move, and he almost cracks a smile at how "badass” he’s acting. As the end of the verse ends, he slows his moves down to a simple shuffle. Finally, the last instance of the bossa nova sample comes back and he flashes his bright smile again to match his excitable cha cha. As the sample breaks down in distortion, his smile fades until he lets his body fall loose and his head hanging.
After ten more extra tries, his body starts to feel exhausted from all of the effort he’s put in. With his body already loose, he crumbles to the floor. After laying on the floor after three more loops of the song, he finally gets up and collects everything. When he gets to his home, he can’t be bothered to edit the video until the next day. The take is only 16 and a half minutes but it had felt like he had been dancing for eternity. As he watches it, he subconsciously critiques himself and finds all the technicalities he could’ve done better. Regardless, he splices it to his best take, adds the 90 second sample of “Cha Cha,” adds a filter to make the colors more intense. Typing a cheeky description, he uploads the video. Nothing will happen but one thing’s for sure, Jaemin learned so much and he can’t wait to do another dance cover, even if it kills him.

[MBC Dance Contest]  Teen Top - Rocking
2:20 - 3:50
Dancing was his life and his passion. He has been dancing for almost as long as he could walk. He started attending lessons when he was young as a way to be social, but he quickly discovered he had a talent for the movement and expression that came with dancing. He had discovered a new part of him that would remain until today. What he couldn’t say through words, he could always say through dancing. It was where he shined the most and where Beomgyu felt most confident.
So, when he had heard about a dance contest, it was only natural for the high schooler to sign up. He was a professional dancer and he could either use that to his advantage or make it fair on others and choose something simpler. He opted for the middle, something hard, but not too hard. He enjoyed fast and quick movements and choreography points so he knew exactly what dance he would do.
He had studied this dance for one of his classes and he had thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it had been exhausting. It was a hard dance with lots of strong, quick steps that were the highlight of the dance and he had seen some of his classmates struggle to perfect the key move. Beomgyu was just grateful that he was as energetic and upbeat as the dance was. It had made it easier for him to learn.
It had been awhile since Beomgyu had last done the dance, so he decided to brush up on the moves and perfect the choreography. Dancing had become second nature to Choi Beomgyu and something he often found himself doing sub-consciously. The hardest part for the dancer was narrowing down the dance into 90 seconds. How could he cut down such an iconic and enjoyable dance into a minute and a half? He decided he would work it out after he had finished recording.
Once he was fully satisfied with his execution of the choreography, Beomgyu had used an empty classroom to record during his lunch break. As usual, Lily was with him, making sure everything ran smoothly and to keep him company. He would be lost without his best friend, that was for sure. Once he was ready, he nodded to Lily to begin the music and recording.
Beomgyu immediately fell into the natural rhythm of dancing and he allowed the music to control him. He felt the lyrics and the dance and tried to execute the emotions through his body. His favourite point of the choreography was the shuffle and kick-step. It had taken some time for him to get it right and a lot of practice before he was happy with how he danced.
Kick, kick, arm, hand, leg.
He put his all into the dance and the way his body meshed with the music. His expressions matched the lyrics and were as expressive as he could do. Lily kept giving him encouraging looks and gestures as she kept filming him. He recorded the dance numerous times before he felt like he was satisfied with the end result. The bell rung for class and the two packed up and continued about their day.
When he got home, he immediately set about editing and perfecting his submission. When he was finally happy, Beomgyu uploaded the video. Dancing was Beomgyu’s passion and his life and he hoped that it showed in the video.

[ MBC Dance Contest ] + Park Junyoung (Jun) - goodbye 1:56- 3:23
the mbc dance contest was something yugyeom found out about thanks to seungmin hyung texting him about it. he had spent his break at work reading over the link, and the rules and thinking over what he would do. there’s no way he would mess this opportunity, after all it’s not as if he would be going out of his way for it. he already uploads videos once a week, whats using one for this context?
and he’s sure seungmin hyung would try to flay him alive if he missed the chance.
even if the odds are against him--even if the chances of him going anywhere with his dance skills, of stepping into that world that so many of his friends have found their way in--is impossible, well.
who was yugyeom to give up?
that night he went to the studio instead of going home, a text to dongmin to let him know he was going to be late and not to worry, and it’s there that yugyeom spent the night. dancing and practicing and working through different songs and different choreo’s until something just stuck.
he thought of the friends who had already moved forwards into their future, of yien hyung who’s debuted and doing amazing things, or meiqi who also recently debut’d, of dongmin who’s been signed for a while, of hyunggu who was signed and working towards that dream they both hold. so similar to each other, except it’s yugyeom who was still on his own.
yugyeom who works random hours in a chicken shop and spends his nights on the streets performing on his own.
he needs to move forward.
that window of time he has for him to step into the world with his friends, with the people he cares about, is growing slimmer and yugyeom knows he will lose it. he knows he can’t spend forever how he is, especially with enlistment in the future.
so he would take every chance he could find.
and in true yugyeom fashion, he decided to go with a jun song. in the past he’s covered a number of jun songs both for youtube, and busking and other competitions--his mind brings up the mga when he performed want. yeah, jun covers is kind of yugyeoms thing and he figured it couldn’t hurt to do another one here. after all, he knows all the dances by heart and he enjoys them. an important part of dance, he thinks, is enjoying it.
this time around he decided to go with one of his favorite songs from jun, his japanese release goodbye though with only a 90 second window to show off, it had been tough picking which part of the dance to go with. in the end, he figured it out.
he dances to the song as if it were his own and not someone else’s that he was covering. his body moving so smoothly through each motion that it was clear he’s really practiced this one. and he has. for a while it was the one he would do at busking for his solo--though everyone at busking likes the more upbeat songs so he had switched it around. but this one has always been kind of special to him.
he moves with the music, feeling the emotion behind the song--the lyrics, and letting that show through in his movements and his expression.
he wants everyone to see his passion in dance, his drive to become someone known for his skill. he wants people to see him. to see.
the song comes to an end, he hits the final poses and the gentle motions that come with the end pose, but even as the song ends, it’s not really over. no, yugyeoms times has not ended yet and he’s determined to make his dream a reality.

[ mbc dance contest ] tje austin - right for you ( x ) okgeebeom uploaded a new video !  desc; ...
sometimes you just have to force yourself into doing things out of your comfort zone. as much as jibeom wants to be an idol, he knows that he’s gotta get better and obviously more confident in not only his singing skills but his dancing as well. his overall confidence should also go up, but he’ll work on that.
jibeom isn’t as good of a dancer as he is a singer, but he’s very manageable and doesn’t give up. he’s not a natural born performer but he’s got raw, untapped potential that just needs to be harnessed in a better way. in fact, he’s not quite a freestyle dancer but he can learn dances fast enough for the most part. jibeom should really be sick of all these contests and auditions and things of the like but he can’t help it. he’s not quite looking for his next big break. he’s looking for the experience. if anything amazing were to happen along the way, then he’ll surely take advantage of the opportunity. but as for now, he wants to do what he wants without any care in the world.
when mbc announced their dance contest, jibeom didn’t find out until he had gone on social media and from a few friends that were talking about it. of course, he knew if he didn’t do it, he’d regret it more than anything. after all, you miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take and jibeom was willing to make as many shots as he possibly could.
he uploads videos all the time and his subscribers and viewers know that. on the other hand, he mostly does singing videos and not dancing videos so he knows it’s going to be quite a shock for them. heck, even his brother will get shocked considering he doesn’t do much of any performance aspects about him, but jibeom will let his older bro know after he finishes filming and uploading.
the dance wasn’t rough or hard-hitting. it was smoother and a lot more fluid. the song itself was very apparent of that fact. filming wasn’t a big deal either, but he had to make sure it looked good. renting out a few hours every day at a local dance studio was definitely a good investment but as long as he got to practice, he was okay with spending just a bit more than he usually does. all in all, he’s excited to be exploring new sides of himself.

[ +3.4k, -251 ] hyojin-ssi... are you perhaps in your dancing phase now??ㅋㅋㅋ
[ +1.2k, -10 ] omg if you’re doing a dance cover... does that mean there’s a vocal one coming up soon?? plssss do oneㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
[ +362, -17 ] oh woah the improvement!! i still remember when you were struggling back on tv... and now you’re here... oppa, fighting!
it’s still a foreign feeling when he stands in the studio, tugging at the sleeves of his black t-shirt subconsciously. no matter how much he practices, he can’t shake the feeling that he doesn’t really belong here.
( you’re a singer, not a dancer. wasn’t it already enough reading the netizen comments? some people are only good at one thing, and shouldn’t overrstep their boundaries. )
“ai ya ya, tonight i’m the dancing king~”
humming to himself to loosen the strange knot in his stomach, hyojin bops his head side to side to no melody in particular as he adjusts the camera, trying to push the thoughts down. he supposes that fate has had certain things in store for him when he went onto naver a couple of days ago, spotting the bright flier advertising a dance competition.
( in retrospect, the fact that he didn’t dance was made apparent to even his own body. the memories still make his muscles hurt. )
he’s not sure what compelled him to fill out the form, the action not even registering until his eyes meet with the submission confirmation.
( you can always go back on it, something says quietly. you can just not post. you can just wait a few days for it to pass, and it’ll be like nothing ever happened. )
“hello, i’m kim hyo -- hello, i’m a contestant -- hi, i’m kim hyojin, and i’ll be participat --”
sighing and frowning, hyojin shakes his head. maybe no intro.
( he’ll do better this time. with the weight of taeyang’s elimination now nothing but a small speck of regret that lingers at the back of his head during late, dark, nights, he’s a little more confident in himself. besides, at least he can’t say now that he didn’t try to get better. )
///
the moment the red light of the camera flickers on, hyojin backs up, tucking his shirt into his trackpants a final time, bouncing on the heels of his feet lightly as he makes sure to press play on his phone connected to the speakers. he has a good feeling about this runthrough.
when the music starts, he’s already standing in place at the center of the studio floor, waiting for his cue in the music to pose, rolling his arm down to point at the ground beside him and crossing his leg over, before sliding to rest his knees on the ground.
on the first ‘hey,’ he jumps up, flicking his wrist one way and then the other in time with the other shouts. his muscles feel like they’re burning ever so slightly, but it’s a good burn, not one that slows him down. it’s like an exercise session gone well, the kind that strengthens the body instead of tiring it out.
letting the beat continue to carry him away as he starts to move the rest of his limbs carefully, the movement ingrained into his muscles from many late night practices alone, a slight grin makes its way onto his face, the only expression visible underneath the visor of his cap.
fortunately, the dance had just enough pauses and poses to allow him to regain his breath without being too obvious, and by the time the final dance break came on, the bright shine to his eyes is no longer hidden as he lifts up a hand to tear off the snapback, revealing his tousled hair and bright smile at the pause before the instrumental break.
mouthing along with the “hey”s, he makes sure to keep at least every step here precise. even if the moves weren’t the most polished, at least the energy was there.
///
he barely has enough time to bow before the song ends, marking the finish of his 90 seconds. flopping on the ground right after, the camera still very much rolling but his brain coaxing him to just lay and breathe, he’ll worry over it later while editing the video, hyojin lets out a final shout before shutting his eyes.
looks like there’s no going back.

[ MBC Dance Contest ] + 5SOS - Youngblood - [reference video]
When it comes to competition, Yiren is (almost) always the first one to relent- to allow others to enjoy the spotlight that winning brings, and to be happy with herself for simply participating. It's just not in her nature to fight- unless you count the eight times this week when she argued with the same girl over choreography for one of her classes, Yiren has a great memory, and she never tolerated anyone questioning it.
When MBC announces a competition however, and the prize for such competition being the chance to be on a music show, the question of simply being happy for participating gets thrown out the window. All her life, she had grown used to being told that if she wanted something, to go and get it herself- to achieve greatness if that's what she wanted, and to do so on her own terms. Which is why she spends entirely too much energy and effort in filming an over-the-top video to post to her youtube channel in mere hopes that it would get her some kind of attention. (Which turned out to be much more of a challenge than she anticipated.)
For her filming site, she chooses the outside of one of the business buildings her father has scheduled for renovation- guaranteed to be empty, but neutrally pretty enough to use as a background.
Her own dance style is likely one that isn't expected for a competition, at least not this kind, but it's what she excels at, what she loves and what Yiren knows she can show her skill in- in both dance skill and choreography. She had rehearsed long enough to know what would look good to prospective casting agents, she thinks. (Yiren has never really known, but she definitely had a few good guesses thanks to lots of research.)
Her chosen song is a pretty popular favorite of many, and though she is cold, the warmups she did inside before filming help her to feel almost too warm in the chill of the weather. she eases through the motions as if they were muscle memory, oozing fluidity and class as she turns, blending all her years of ballet and contemporary into what she hopes has turned into a beautiful choreography. She thinks of it as a play to put on; All the time put into choosing a song, working steadily on a choreo, and scouting locations and picking outfits, all come together to one moment to be captured in digital film, and hopefully seen by many. When she thinks of it that way, she knows that no matter the outcome, she definitely put on the show.
