Not The Best Day

Dakota’s head was pounding. It wasn’t the only part of him that ached, but it was what hurt the most. It wasn’t often he’d found himself separated from Cavendish, but ever since his partner had gone rogue, Dakota found himself alone. This time he’d been trying to clean up alien trash when he’d been caught in a ship’s tractor beam, carried across town before the aliens seemed to realize they’d picked up an unexpected passenger, and unceremoniously dropped him into the alley. The impact had knocked him out cold.
Distantly, he could feel something nudging against his shoulder. Again. Again. Dakota tried to open his eyes, but he couldn’t muster enough consciousness just yet. A voice sounded, almost as though he was underwater. “...God, I don’t ... do! I’m not... doctor.”
Slowly, Dakota’s consciousness came back to him and he gave his fingers an experimental flex. He attempted to open his eyes again, managing to get them open a crack before he winced and squeezed them shut again. Even with his shades, the daylight felt like a thousand knives being jabbed right into his sockets. Dakota groaned and slowly brought his hand up to his head, keeping his eyes shielded as he opened them once more.
He squinted at Zack, his pupils unevenly dilated. “Ughhh... what happened...?"
