Two options
History option
Thoughts about Yao after the Yuan Dynasty?
I vaguely remember from Chinese history class that this point dramatically effected the pace of the character of China as a nation.
If you aren't a history nerd
What parts of Yao's character do you think people overlook?
oh man i would love to come back and answer the first one, one day. i've been trying to pick up on more chinese history, but alas i consider myself a newbie to the whole thing since its pretty long and winding. also ive been pretty busy and adhd sucks 😔😔😔
so ill answer the second one for now!!
ive actually reblogged something not a short while with other factors contributing to yao's character. for most people, his age is usually the first thing that comes up, then followed by his association with the rest of the east asians or rochu. id say people do a decent job in acknowledging his relationship with others in general.
i think the biggest thing people overlook, is yao in general, like yao as a person. because i've noticed that when considering yao's personality and traits, there's this sort of default of his 4000 years of living as the main influencing factor for the way he is.
and don't get me wrong! i believe his age is crucial, but i also do believe it shouldn't influence everything about him. what does he do in free time? how would he react in certain situations? likes? dislikes? his pet peeves? how is like in the now? specific traits about him to yao as a person. not from his country, not from his history or age, not from others, but him in general. like these are just really simple and general things, but considering these things helps a lot when thinking about his character. now im not saying you can't attrubite some of his characteristics because of his age, but it would be nice to acknowledge those parts outside of it.
i also need to acknowledge that like, yeah yao is a pretty old man and he can act like a boomer, but he is able to adapt to modernization and technology. i can't solely see him as a cranky old man that a lot of fanon potrays him as. for someone who has been living for 4000 years, im pretty sure he would know how to adapt. how the modernization and advancement of technology is something pretty recent and rapid from within the last couple of centuries, so of course he would act like an old man sometimes, haha.
that! and that yao is.. well he can be.... silly himself. i adore the potrayals of yao as this wise person who has seen a lot and carries a lot of melancholy on his back and has a better understanding of the world than most others. but, for god's sake, he is easily swayed by really cute stuff, has NOT the greatest parenting skills, has befriended a man in a bootleg hello kitty costume, and he literally can NOT touch his toes when bending over. this guy can also be really ridiculous and i see these factors as an add on to his character.
that said back to his age, technically speaking, china isn't the only one bearing the burden of his age. some of the nations are thousands of years old themselves, it's just that they're not as old as him. and, im pretty sure he isn't the oldest nation in the world ? (ive looked it up multiple times and the results are always mixed. it depends on what you're asking for in what context.) but i think it's interesting to realize that there's some nations out there that can relate to yao more than we'd realize.
thanks for asking!!! i love him so much

also i think soulmate aus are just an exaggeration of the very real feeling of helplessness that comes from falling in love. relationships are certainly chosen and built and worked on, but falling in love can seem so out of our control, a feeling so intense sometimes we don't know what to do with it, sometimes we don't want it, sometimes it's inconvenient or complicated. i think soulmate AUs are made to play into that by externalizing the force that makes us feel powerless and yet keeping it abstract enough that it might as well be coming from within, instead of it being entirely imposed. it is something innately within us and innately within them that draws us together, even against our own desires.
and that's really fun!

rank classic fandom ships!
Classic Fandom Ships huh? Okiiii if I miss any let me know
1. USUK
1-5: negative possible incest out of 5 (quote my friend Lemon)
Do I ship it?: I’d rather get a booster shoot, thanks.
General Feelings: I can’t ship ships when one character raised the other, even if it’s an au where it didn’t happen, knowing that England is a caretaker to him in that way just kills it for me. There’s no way to make having a crush on someone you raised, distant or not, not be weird. No matter what that’s going to come off creepy. Doesn’t even matter if they’re blood related or anything. It’s still the idea of one nation being an adult while the other raised them since they were a little kid. It gives me the same vibe as dating your childhood babysitter. If you want this dynamic, why not try PruEng, DenEng or PortEng, same sunshine x raincloud aesthetic with 0% creepy under tones.
TLDR: You’re just in it for the Cute Jock x Angry Nerd dynamic and it shows.
2. GerIta (Ive already talked about.)
TLDR: If fandom ships were ice cream, GerIta would be vanilla. It’s a base line, it’s fine as it is and some people hate it for that exact reason. I like vanilla, it’s alright.
3. FRUK (Ive already talked about)
TLDR: 11/10 would pirate fight again.
4. Rochu (Ive already talked about)
TLDR: It vibes. It just vibes.
5. Spamano
1-5: -5
Do I ship it?: I’d rather not, thanks.
General Feelings: I just never liked spamano, again the Angry x Sunshine (which isnt what Romano is, but it’s how it’s often written) isn’t really fun to me? I used to hate it cause I don’t like tsundere’s in writing style cause I personally cannot understand them. Like my brain does not register well with aggressive insults being seen as compliments because it’s from X person. But that’s just me, I don’t do that shit I think “tsundere” needs to die. But that’s beside the point.
I don’t like it now for two reasons. One because of the same thing I said with USUK, I’m not comfortable with shipping pairs where one raised the other, no matter what it’s gonna be weird dynamic wise. Two is in my mind the merits of Spain as an older brother or father figure to Romano mean more than him as a love interest. It can create a lot of dynamics that are more fun both between Romano and Spain and Romano and his brother. It creates a situation where one is often in the position the other wanted.
Vene having more money and general social support, but often having to play along in cherry high class situations which makes a lot of his relations, especially with Austria, feel kind of hallow. While Romano was more poor and seen as low class and crass, but he has much more honest and deep relationships with the small group of people he cares for. it creates situations where the brothers can envy one another and I dont know. I just like it better than leaving Romano with only something like Rome and letting Vene have Hungary and Austria.
TLDR: Let Romano have a father figure please he’s earned it.
6. PruAus
1-5: -2
Do I ship it?: No
General Feelings: If you like Prussia with someone slightly uptight and orderly, why not just use England instead? Their personalities work better together cause at least then he gets a partner that understands him being a feral punk gremlin. I’m biased in this regard I don’t like Austria as a character so take with a grain of salt. But I never cared for the dynamic. The only PruAus thing I ever liked with bubblyernie’s ask art school prussia blog, and that’s it. It feels like the rivalry dynamic but it doesn’t get to the fun part for me, but again I also get that I have a bias.
TLDR: Meh.
7. PruHun
1-5: 5
Do I ship it?: Y e s
General Feelings: I just like the idea of them being strong feral gremlins on horseback together. Powerful generals, good friends, just the idea of excited forest heathens on adventures. I don’t know, it’s just fun. If not romantic they would be ride or die friends and I cannot be convinced otherwise.
TLDR: 10/10 would feral gremlin in the woods again.
8. AusHun
1-5: -2
Do I ship it?: No
General Feelings:I never liked cause I always saw Hungary change around Austria versus other people, especially Prussia. Plus they’re canonly divorced. I’m not an expert on Hungary, but I just don’t care for it. There’s better ships. Though again, I am biased.
TLDR: Let them stay divorced, Hungary deserves better,
9. PruCan
1-5: 0
Do I ship it?: Nah
General Feelings: Nothing really to say on PruCan, I just see them as friends and ship them with other people. They’d be good gaming friends tho absolutely 110% catch those two raiding together. They’re gaming nerd buddies and I can respect that.
10. SuFin
1-5: -3
Do I ship it?: Fuck No.
General Feelings: I really don’t. I just don’t like it. I know mainline ship but I just- Every time I want to talk about the Nordics it comes up. I’m not well versed in Nordics. But every single time I try to talk about Finland, or any of the nordics. BUT ESPECIALLY FINLAND, it devolves into how Sweden plays into it, or how SuFin plays into it. Like I cannot talk about Finland without him being treated as Sweden’s accessory and it infuriates me. Let Finland be his own god damn character and then maybe I’ll like SuFin cause he’s never given his time to shine without having it feed into someone else.
TLDR: Finland is no one’s wife, fuck off.
11. DenNor
1-5: 0
Do I ship it?: Nah
General Feelings: Again, I never knew much about the Nordics, but the basic of the ship when I first saw it was ‘haha Norway chokes Denmark with his tie what a tsun-tsun hur hur’, which makes me really uncomfortable... as someone who doesn’t vibe with abuse=romantic feelings. I like NorFin myself, and Denmark is a ball of sunshine. I don’t hate it but it’s not really good.
TLDR: Why was the tie choking thing seen as funny/romantic? Am I missing something??
12. RusAme
1-5: 4
Do I ship it?: Sure
General Feelings: While it’s not my immediate first pick romance wise, I thoroughly enjoy all the RusAme there is out there. If not lovers, I still see them as ride or die friends. Because they’re both freakishly strong I feel like they’re the only ones who can really cut loose and use their full strength on one another even in the most small ways and it means the world to them that they can do that. No holding back just full open honesty with each other. Also the fact that it’s canon that people think they hate each other and they’re just like ‘nah man we pals’ is fucking great.
TLDR: Rock on you funky space lads.

iran + china for the ask game if you're still doing it?
Iran
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
alighnment: goth | prep | nerd | jock
best quality: hmmm I’ll prbly say that they’re a master negotiator- they strike a great balance between being proud and not underestimating their opponent (most of the time, they’re not exactly immune to hubris) When you finally get through them and all that pomp and circumstance, they can be surprisingly forthright and honest (thought it’s an entirely different story for family members or ppl they have troubled relationships with)
worst quality: Their brutal pragmaticism tbh- it’s a side effect of living for so long and seeing such dramatic and drastic changes, but they’re very good at doing whatever it takes. They’re a little bit more at peace/resigned with this than someone like, say, India.
ship them with: India (their dramatic and proud natures mean they mesh well together), China (Silk Road gang and often travelled to see each other in caravans), Ethiopia (fought a war over yemen that one time but they’re chill now)
brotp them with: India, China, Ethiopia, Ancient Egypt, Egypt, Syria (have known each other since childhood and syria is just suffering :’) ), Armenia, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan
(disclaimer that just because i put a chara here doesn’t mean i dislike the ship or even dislike seeing them together!) needs to stay away from: Rome, Ancient Greece, Saudi Arabia (”get off my lawn you whippersnapper”), Yemen (Have also known each other for a long time, Yemen is also :’) ), Turkey, England, Israel, Kurdistan, Syria
misc. thoughts: Grows flowers in their house. Eats a bunch of bastani. Most of their stuff kinda smells of roses. Comforted Egypt when his mom died. Complained a lot about Rome to China and India. Secretly fond of wine. Has a forbidden twitter account. When they were young, they had a pet hedgehog, and Kurdistan's pet fox kept on trying to eat it.
China
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
alighnment: goth | prep | nerd | jock (TBH I THINK HE WENT FROM GOTH TO PREP AS HE GOT OLDER LMAO)
best quality: Hmmm, I think that he's actually fairly reliable and dependable if he's not trynna fuck you over- need hw help? he's a great tutor (if not for him being kind of an asshole if u don't get it as fast as he thinks u should) say ur hungry? he'll just suddenly peel some oranges for you. left your work lunch behind? he'll deliver it to you, complaining all the way
worst quality: Among his many many other flaws, one that stands out is definitely his condescension, superiority complex, and his belief that he always knows better than anyone. While that isn't unfounded, given that he's seen so much, it's also fucked him over a lot (rip opium wars) but once he learns his lesson with a foe, he is unlikely to make the same mistake (at least for a while)
ship them with: India (seen too much for too long, tired and nosy and horny), Iran/Persia (oldies and their silk road shenanigans)
brotp them with: India, Iran/Persia, Rome (sent letters and nudes to each other over the silk road), America (money money money motherfucker), south korea (sk cries in the corner when China shows up in his latest fashion atrocity), north korea (his reserved nature makes him more preferable to china), Macau (tho not explicitly stated, pretty clearly the family favorite), Vietnam (bugs her all the time, Viet is ignoring his calls), Ghana, Thailand
(disclaimer that just because i put a chara here doesn’t mean i dislike the ship or even dislike seeing them together!) needs to stay away from: England (china’s feelings on him remain understandably complicated, leaning to the derisive side), Russia (personally ambivalent on rochu tbh), Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Tibet, Japan (HOOO BOI)
misc. thoughts: lights up a box of zhonghua/chunghwa cigarettes everyday. Found in the park every morning doing taichi. Experienced in a lot of fields of martial arts. Swears by Feng Shui. Still bikes everywhere. Complains about historical dramas’ accuracy and costuming all the time. Whenever he calls old friends, he’s on the damn phone for hours. Has a vegetable garden on his porch. Had a perm in the 80s. Once bought a bunch of currency for a game app he was playing on the black market and got banned from the game.

language is communication, it is the medium through which we communicate, and that which we communicate is either about ourselves, the world around us, or the possibility of ourselves and the world around is. Maths is a language that allows us to understand that world in a different way, in a more productive way; codify and translate it into things that are comprehensible to our reason. Through math things like the movement of the planets can be understood, by "calculating" we predict, by noting through numbers and equations. But it's not the only language and therefore it's not the only way to understand those phenomena; i could also describe them to you in Spanish, and I could tell you that la luna está hermosa hoy, brillante y creciente, más brillante y más enorme que ayer, y cada vez que la miro siento que me mira también, que me respira un aliento fresco y reconfortante, que me escucha, que me cuida.
Is this information I communicated scientifically useful? well, no. Probably not, no. But it's information regardless, isn't it? It's language. The value of the information is entirely subjective, depends on what you wanted to know, I suppose, what you're planning to do with it.

i believe that some things, some very basic things about the human experience can only be transmitted through art and through fiction. i could spend hours reading fucking idk (i was about to give a very bad example here and say thompson) hobsbawm’s take on the 19th century but as much as i enjoyed and learnt from it it could never actually give me a sense of what it could be like to be a person in that time. And i get that’s not the intended purpose and that’s fine but there’s, i think, a very human need to be able to relate to things and identify ourselves in them and sometimes a well researched historical fiction novel can say a lot more than a non-fiction book.
with this i dont mean that we shouldnt be writing non-fiction (obviously) or that historically inaccurate content should be Banished From Our Land (i mean.... MAYBE no not really) but that it wouldnt hurt to make more of an effort to put together science and entertainment, and to bring to life via fiction the stories of the very real people who lived hundreds, thousands of years ago. you can tell me planning out how to build the pyramids was very hard work but im never gonna understand it on a deep impactful way until you tell me the story of fuckckign idk Setka the scribe, spending day upon day planning the construction, while in parallel showing me the story of Adjo, a dude who really did not wanna work in constructing it so he tried to run away but the state got a hold of his family and made him know that if he didnt show up to work like the rest of everyone they’d be held captive. and then maybe id understand better, in a deeper more meaningful way, even if the story itself was fictional, the reality of life within that time period in that place?
im sorry but i think its a necessity, for us to work in historical fiction novels, in movies, in videogames, in tv shows. and besides being a necessity..... i just think it’d be p cool.

what i do is once i find an artist i like i look for an album and decide im gonna go through the entire thing. so i start with the first song and listen to it for as long as i need to, sometimes it’s entire days listening to the song, with varying levels of attention. so once i’m ready what i do is listen to it and try to write down what i think the lyrics are, with a black pen.
once that’s done i look for the lyrics and listen again while reading them. then i compare the real lyrics to the ones i wrote down, correct them with a red pen and listen to the song again paying close attention to the bits i didn’t get.
then i look up all the words and expressions i don’t understand and write them down next to the song with their translations.
after that i make an effort to really learn the song and i try again to write down the lyrics, this time on the computer. i check again if i got it right, again i correct and pay attention to the bits where i got confused or didn’t understand or made a grammar mistake.
i’ll do this with every song in the album. if you’re taking it easy like i usually am this can take like, a month, but i promise you learn So So much. or at least i do. music helps because also rhyme schemes make it easier to understand pronunciation. it’s still fun and i learn new vocabulary and expressions while also bettering my listening skills AND my writing :) it’s pretty cool!
as i bonus sometimes i try and sing the songs and then compare what they sound like to what i sound like to work on pronunciation.

i dont know how to put this but if you’re someone who makes artistic content and you’re from the third world you do kind of? have a responsability to represent it in your work? like of course no one can force you to and you’re gonna do whatever the fuck you feel like doing but i keep arguing with my writer friends who set all their stories in idk fucking england don’t you think there are enough stories set in england? who’s gonna tell our stories? the british sure as fuck won’t.
also they shouldn’t because gross.

i... think it’s vital for historians to be collabing with artists and media producers to make entertainment. like we have on one hand books written in ways no one who hasnt spent years introducing themselves on the world of historiography could get much less give afuck about, and right next to those horribly researched blockbusters that perpetuate incorrect notions about the past. should those books and those movies stop existing? eh. i dont know. but, like, what if we actually tried to make content for- i started this post wrong let me try again brb

i keep making up tags for things and then forgetting them it SUCKS
some i wanna be more conscious in using are "with my raft" for translating rock nacional just cause i can "(translation) is theft" for putting the original spanish quotes under translated pieces of literature, "untranslatable jokes" MY BELOVED A CLASSIC, "latinoamérica y el español" i havent used that one in a really long while so its probably full of cringe (same with my "polis" tag), "hai society" for me being armenian, "pext tost" for dumb shit i say i wanna find later, "guillotine enthusiast" for being enthusiastic about guillotines, "tagged me" for uh. when people tag me in things. love looking at that one <3, i used to have a "rochu nerds out" tag for when i cried about how much i love history and shit too..., and my "consumed" tag for uh. pretty people. i like looking at them
