The Thalians were first created in 1955 by a group of celebrities interested in helping children with mental health issues. The organization takes its name from Thalia, Greek Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. In 1966, the Mr. Wonderful award was created to honor those involved in entertainment and philanthropy. In 1974, Lucille became the first woman honored.
