You formed in late 2020. What can you share about the band’s origins, and your 90’s and 2000’s inspired post punk/alternative/rock genre? 

Calvin (guitar and vocal) and Graham Kelly (bass / back vocal) are brothers and grew up playing music together. While out with his dad Calvin tried to pick up Laura (drums and back vocal) while she was working, later discovering that she played music. They have now been dating for the past two years. Adam (keys and guitar) we met at a party where he was the DJ. 

The Hedge Hoppers sound is as unique as its members. Each of us loves a different style of music and by combining what we love about the different genres we listen to individually, we ended up creating The Hedge Hoppers’ sound. Which doesn’t really fit nicely into any category, but is somewhere between rock n roll, pop, and alternative.  

How much support have you received from your family and friends? 

Our families are nothing but supportive, my parents even let us jam in their basement with a full drum kit as often as we would like. Best Parents Ever!

How do you approach composing a new song? Can you give us some insight into the lyrics, arrangement, instruments, melodies, etc. and if it’s very collaborative? 

When I’m (Calvin) writing, I’m inspired by the world around me, often starting with a basic outline of chords and then tapping into what feeling that progression is evoking. This feeling is then driven into the lyrical composition of the song. Each song has its own personality, and your job as a singer is to try to convey that feeling to the audience. 

More recently songwriting has been more collaborative with Graham and I (Calvin) co-writing lyrical content and the whole band chipping in on composition. Adam likes to add harmonic ideas to the table, while Laura swoops in last to establish the groove.

We love to see women in rock music; for Laura, who are some of your inspirations, and what inspired you to start the drums? 

I started playing the drums when I was 3! I was really influenced by Avril Lavigne; growing up I remember I used to play the drums to her album Under My Skin for hours everyday! 

As I got older, my dad really inspired me to play some Alex Van Halen which inspired me to continue to challenge myself. I started to learn Rush and to this day, Neil Peart will forever inspire me with his technical abilities

Your debut album, If You Want Me To Stay, is out September 30. How long has this album been in the making, and what challenges have you faced and overcome in the process?

We definitely battled through 2020 trying to record this album amongst what was going on in the world. It took a lot longer to bring this to the table than we had hoped, so now we’re sitting on at least 2 more albums worth of music. 

But that time taken has allowed us to progress 100 fold as a band, and gain more of a following. Everything happens for a reason.

Our favourite release so far is “Fade to Grey.” What can you share about the inspiration behind it? 

I (Calvin) wrote “Fade To Grey” inspired by traveling to NYC for the first time. I was traveling across the country from BC to NYC on a road trip with a long time friend from college. Inspiration stuck when we finally made it to the downtown core on the subway. I had never been on the subway before and I was coming from living in a small mountain town. I was totally out of my element. As perfectly demonstrated when I tried to back my 4Runner fully packed to the roof backwards out of a parking garage on Wall Street on Friday at 12 noon. Anyways. 

It occurred to me that these people living in NYC saw something beautiful there. The chorus is all about being able to see a rainbow (ie. the “colors in the rain” in the song) in the concrete jungle of NYC, and not letting those colors fade to grey. Being able to see the beauty in any situation no matter where you are.

After being out on the town all night making some unforgettable memories, I came back to where we were staying and just wrote down how I was feeling in those moments. Being totally ‘at a loss’ having no words to describe what this person was making me feel.

You recorded the album at EMAC Studios, and worked with Robert Nation and Nick Fetchison. What was your experience working with them, and how did they help you achieve your desired sound? 

Nick is a fantastic engineer and producer. I honestly had no real idea how to create the guitar tones I was looking to hear from the album, so we set up 6 different amps and cabs and mixed the sounds together until we got the perfect match. 

They’re great to work with! Honestly, really great to work with and the studio is incredible. There’s nothing like the complete quiet you get in the studio room, it’s like being out in the winter at midnight with the snow falling and all the sounds are muffled, except inside! The change from when the sound erupts from the speakers makes the whole place come alive.

You have a release show planned. What details can you share? 

Our release show for If You Want Me To Stay, is scheduled for October 14 at Rum Runners in London, Ontario. We’re co-headlining with Hartlet, an awesome up and coming rock band from London, also we have support from Polluted and Scram. Both these guys work the crowd and get the people to rock.

You have some really beautiful, drawn cover art for singles “Fade to Grey,” “Powder Blue” and “Sweet Perfume.” Who designed them? 

The designs for the cover art were conceptualized by the band, and we hired an individual over fivver to make those ideas come alive. 

How is the current music scene and landscape in Ontario? 

The music scene is picking back up!! We have had the opportunity to tour some cities here in Southwestern Ontario with good response. 

You have to hustle! As always in the music industry, you only get what you put in. There are some great grant programs that we are looking into for this winter, and there is more funding available with London being named UNESCO City of Music. Commercial radio is hard to break into, but local stations have picked up a few of our songs! 

You are seasoned performers, and love performing live across the province. How would you describe a Hedge Hoppers live set? 

We put all our energy and passion into every performance. Whether the song calls for an emotional and slow performance, or jumping around and hitting the high notes perfectly we always give everything we have.

We always play a different selection of covers and original music to match the energy of the place we’re playing, always a little unique and always a lot of fun.

When you first formed, did you anticipate (or hope) to be playing so many concerts? Is there a band member who’s responsible for your bookings, and getting your name and music out? 

We could not have done it without Calvin. Calvin is responsible for booking all our gigs, posting on all social media, booking tours, handling the finances, scheduling interviews and designing posters.

Do you have a favourite venue you’ve played?

The best venue that we have played would probably be The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. To be on a stage that has so much history, The Rolling Stones played there. After the show a few Americans that were in town for business asked for our autographs. Definitely a cool moment.

Can you name a few Canadian (Ontario) artists you’ve played with or personally known, whose music you’d recommend?

Some Ontario acts to watch out for would be Small Town Strip Club, we have played multiple shows with these guys and they do not disappoint. They sound just like their album. 

Sarina Haggarty is also one to watch, she has a beautiful voice and is absolutely lovely as a person.

After the release of your album, what’s up next for the fall/winter? Is your sound still evolving? 

We're recording a new album this winter!!! We're also planning on scheduling a large tour including stops outside of Ontario for next summer. 

We’re still just getting started so our sound is definitely still changing, I (Graham) think we all pull the band in a slightly different direction and when we come together we usually come up with something unique.

What are your recommendations of a few cool places to visit as a tourist in your hometown? 

If you enjoy hiking, the Kains Woods Trail is beautiful. Concert venue is definitely the London Music Hall.

If the band, collectively, could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why? 

We’d be spicy pralines and cream! I (Graham) bring the spice, Calvin is nuts, Laura is the sweet part, and unfortunately in this metaphor Adam has to be the cone because I called him about this question today and he didn’t answer (don’t get me wrong though, he is a great waffle cone!).

just. my point is that all interns should be paid, period. but most especially if they’re doing an international program. no amount of “proving and humbling yourself for your intern employer for the privilege of earning your keep and having somewhere to sleep and eat” should be needed to be paid as an intern. just pay them for fucks sake. because otherwise it’s just a waste of time & money; and even more so for lower income students, who will obvs not take part if there’s an exorbitant fee of $7,000 minimum for the program for starters even if it’s domestic or online (since covid).
