Hi Babylon 5 tag!!

I’m watching Bab5 for the first time (I’m on Season 2 Episode 6, I’ve been watching with my partner Steam and having a BLAST) and I just cannot believe that I haven’t heard more about this show? The stories, both episodic and long-spanning, are fantastic. And the effects in Season 2 have been SO vastly upgraded from Season 1 - though some of the practical sets I do miss. I love how Bab 5 looks like she’s made of foam and cardboard on the inside. I miss Sinclair ;_; I know that the new captain is trying but he’s just not the same. Ofc. Maybe Sinclair was just........ too good at what he was doing. Beh.

I love Ivanova, I’m glad she and Talia are getting along a BIT better now! I basically love everyone in this series, even the one-off characters like Jinxo and Dodger - strange folks who really make a big impact in the long run, it seems. Londo’s in his Warlock Arc. Get well soon Londo.

Anyways, I figure I’ll start watching the tag a bit! Apparently there’s an animated movie coming out for post-Bab-5 and I am AVOIDING THE HELL OUT OF WATCHING IT (for now!). I have a long way to go and I don’t want to be spoiled on anything. <3

Jeff/Annie:

who holds the umbrella when it rains: Jeff. It’s pure logistics. He’s so tall! If Annie was holding the umbrella, he’d probably risk decapitation.

who is the grumpiest in the morning: I could see Annie being grumpy before her caffeine, whereas Jeff sort of maintains a consistent level of grumpiness all throughout the day. Also, I feel like Jeff would be dangerously amused by grumpy Annie.

who worries more when the other is sick/hurt: I feel like Annie would worry a normal amount and probably coo at Jeff sympathetically a lot, but Jeff would try to act chill about it and then legit cry in the bathroom because he could not bear to see his beloved suffer so.

who plays pranks on the other: I feel like they probably both play pranks on each other, almost always because another member of the study group (or many!) is in on the scheme.

who is always the first to suggest cuddling on the sofa: Jeff literally first suggested it in HIS VERY DAYDREAMS.

who insists on creating nicknames for the other: Based upon her dragon list, I could see Annie coming up with a pretty extensive nickname list for Jeff. Then she runs them all by him and he ranks them on a scale from 1 to 5. (His favorite is “Jeff Pratt, Chris Pratt’s Hotter Cousin,” which he himself suggested and which really does not have any catchy nickname-like qualities. He just likes hearing Annie say that he is hotter than Chris Pratt.)

who drools on the other when they’re asleep: Jeff, and then he’s really horrified when Annie tells him about it.

who says ‘I love you’ first: Jeff. I like to think that it is a “Jeff rushes to Annie’s door because he can deny his feelings no longer (probably her temporary door because she’s off at her FBI internship) and confesses his love” situation, to sort of right the wrong that season two did us. If Jeff runs all the way to Washington D.C. in the rain, all the better.

who holds the umbrella when it rains: Rosa.

who is the grumpiest in the morning: Gina. I feel like, similar to Jeff and Annie above, Rosa’s mastered the art of all-day consistent grumpiness, but Gina is grumpy with THEATRICAL FLAIR in the morning. She probably threatens to burn the precinct down every morning and Rosa has to grab onto her ankle and try to forcibly pull her out of bed.

who worries more when the other is sick/hurt: I think they both worry about each other quite a bit, and everyone else makes fun of them for it because they both have reputations as such unfeeling stone cold B’s.

who plays pranks on the other: They do not play pranks on each other. They play pranks on other people together.

who is always the first to suggest cuddling on the sofa: I think it probably involves Gina seductively saying “You want a piece of this?” and then they sit down and watch The Great British Baking Show on Netflix and scream at the TV despite the results being long since decided.

who insists on creating nicknames for the other: Gina obstinately calls Rosa “Ro Ro” (’cause it rhymes with J.Lo, bitch!) and Rosa hates it with the fire of a thousand suns, but eventually answers to it. One day Boyle hears Gina call Rosa “Lil’ Ro Ro” and Rosa respond as if that is an acceptable thing, and on that day, Jake/Amy are temporarily his second place otp.

who drools on the other when they’re asleep: Rosa does once when she falls asleep after days working on a very exhausting case (maybe involving PIMENTO being EVIL!!!!! … ahem), and Gina doesn’t dump her immediately and flee the country, and that’s when Gina knows that true feelings have awakened in her frosty diva’s heart.

who says ‘I love you’ first: Rosa says, “Hey, I love you” to Gina one day out of the blue after they’ve been dating for awhile. Gina panics and says, “Pshhhhhh, tell me something I don’t know, ho! YA BURNT.”, tosses her hair, and runs away. (She probably goes and hides in Babylon and CRIES, but this news will never be revealed to the public.) Jake becomes the very awkward go-between in this social situation. Eventually, Gina tells Rosa that she loves her too via public flash mob. It definitely ends with confetti falling on everyone and a dip kiss. Boyle cries. His two former lady loves, loving each other. It’s so beautiful!

S2E14 - And Now A Word

I yelled “Londo you hoe” at my computer screen today as he gave his little talking head section in the early part of the episode and honestly that’s the best thing that I’ve done in a while. And that was before his INTERVIEW!

Hearing G’kar speak about his family in slavery was awful. His mom being unable to leave, the Centauri killing his father because of a mistake... the kinds of trauma that he’s going through are absolutely insane.

I didn’t realize that the Narn/Centauri conflict was so RECENT. In G’kar’s lifetime! He was a slave! And the use of the “never again” phrase also resonates deeply.

S2E17 - In The Shadow of Za’ha’dum

The refugee crisis of the Narn is so sad. The fact that the Centauri are just sweeping in and murdering assumedly thousands? Just... wow. Seeing Franklin so dedicated to his patients means a lot - though he definitely needs more sleep. I feel like the invention of NEW SPACE RELIGIONS was fun, though. Another interesting worldbuilding conversation!

Vir for the WIN. I love his response to Morden as far as “what do you want”. His head on a pike. Love Vir. He’s growing on me more and more.

The Icarus incident is sad but honestly? Character-wise I don’t give a damn about Sheridan’s wife and seeing him do all THIS about it does not endear me to him any more, or her.

Sheridan is in his FULL FASH MODE! WOW!

I cannot believe that he’s trying to use the argument that Morden is “dead” to treat him unlawfully. And holy shit. Doing that to Talia, making her experience that? Garibaldi RESIGNING? Ivanova being ready to report him? CHRIST. Also I was right - when Talia gets brought into an episode, you really know that things are going SIDEWAYS. Sheridan’s actions really do feel over the top to me. I know that he’s upset about his wife dying, and I’d want to know too... but still. This level of anger, this abuse of power... it disgusts me.

Franklin coming in again for the win. I like his character, and he’s right. We can’t solve everything.

The fact that ALL OF THE AMBASSADORS are like “you need to let him THE FUCK GO” is insane. Even KOSH. That’s how you know that things are really going wrong.

OH also the fucking thought police are here! I cannot believe that the psi corps are doing nazi shit (I should not be surprised the psi corps are doing nazi shit) - I do not use the term lightly, they’re literally doing armbands and the whole “watching your neighbors” bit. This whole episode feels like fascism: in space: the beginning. From the top down.

I love Vir searching for words. Not knowing what to say. I think what’s funny is at the beginning of this show, hearing Vir say something like that would come off as funny, and sycophantic. But here, in this moment... I know it’s genuine. I know that he really does wish that things were different. And G’kar’s response - to reference only the dead - feels all too fitting. I want for Londo to feel like Vir does. Why doesn’t he?

What the FUCK is this interrogation, I say once again. Why are we psychologically torturing Delenn. Why are we doing this to her. Can we go back to her saying “butt”. Please.

You know I really don’t LIKE this whole interrogation thing. I venture to say that this is the worst plot that I’ve seen in this show. It just seems over the top and ridiculous? And I don’t understand what it’s all going towards - it just feels rather... rote? I get it - we don’t want people with big egos, or someone who isn’t going to put others before them. But this is ridiculous. And it reeked of torture porn on Delenn’s part. Just kind of stupid.

I feel like this time would’ve been better spent with G’kar and his side of the war plot. Maybe even a bit of a side plot with Vir!

S2E20 Divided Loyalties

Love the commentary on the news to start! I love Delenn talking about the power dynamics of the Minbari - and how she learns sometimes more from the human newspapers about Minbar than from the leadership! The funny bit of hypocrisy in that, according to her own traditions. Also I love her wanting to be a bit more informed about what people think about the Minbari, though!

Ivanova and Talia are FINALLY getting along!!! I’m so happy about it. Funnily enough one of the first things I said during like, the PILOT, was that I was hoping that our two leading-ish ladies would be able to talk to each other well. So this is a really lovely development!

Also there’s uh... there was something... a little sapphic about that. Not gonna lie. It’s probably me being gay as hell. But there was something about that conversation and the offer of Talia staying at Ivanova’s place... that was kinda gay. It was kinda gay, right?

Lyta... one of the most sci-fi names we’ve seen so far on a human character!

I like that she’s kind of bonkers from the start. She read Kosh, after all. That must mess you up.

Dr. Franklin continues to grow on me. His sense of conviction, his dedication to goodness, always makes me happy. Sometimes he’s just stubborn as a mule in the wrong way (eg: the diet episode) but every time I see him, I just get happy.

Kosh and Sheridan playdate WHEN (Update: NOW)

I’m constantly amazed by the puppeteering on Kosh’s suit even though it’s not exactly the most COMPLEX thing. It’s that retracting iris! It reminds me of just how awesome Jim Henson puppets are, even though I don’t think Kosh was made by that org. I wonder who did??? I should look into that.

I found this video (ABOVE!) of someone documenting the suit! So that’s really cool. But it seems like it was just made by the FX team. The Narn armor/outfit that G’kar wears is my favorite for sure. There’s basically no change between S1 and S2 because it’s just peak!

Also you know what. I love data crystals. I love them. They’re so chunky. I feel like I could buy them at Claire’s and then use them as earrings.

The talk between Franklin and Garibaldi about how the future comes with “some assembly required” got me kind of teary, I’m not going to lie. The idea that the future isn’t what it was promised to us when we were young. It really touched me. And it made me feel a bit more attached, empathetic, to people of that age. That the idea of this broken future is more universal than I could’ve known.

S3E4 Passing Through Gethsemane

I predicted this was a chess game before it was a chess game and personally I am very proud of myself.

Kosh is komin’ home! Welcome home Kosh.

Also the monks live here now! They’re giving out little figurines and people LOVE little figurines. I hope the monks make a biergarden and shit if they’re going to live here. And do like, Cool Monk Things (tm) instead of just being BORING monks.

Kosh’s suit is sounding better! That’s good, and also consistent with what I was thinking in the moments that we saw him before.

Lyta is back! She went to Vorlon space... FOR REAL. And the Vorlon Homeworld FOR REAL FOR REAL! Lyta is like a special little attache for Kosh now! The way she talks about him, it’s kind of like Kosh is like her supernatural werewolf boyfriend and honestly I love that for her. She’s living her best life.

The Monks are smart businessmen! This black rose that the monk found feels like a threat to me. Or... it’s TUXEDO MASK!

Death walks among you

I love that Londo tried to threaten Lyta with the psi corps, and Lyta was like “I will rip your fucking brains out”. KILL LYTA! KILL!

Learning about the Minbari way of religious philosophy is super intriguing. And I appreciate that Delenn doesn’t just stop at giving, but wants to learn about the human practices and religions in turn. And the Garden of Gesthemane is an interesting story, and a really moving one, honestly. The strength to stay. I’d like to think that the monks (esp Brother Edward!) and the Minbari have weekly meetings about faith.

Brother Edward went through death of personality! That’s my theory. That’s why he’s seeing this stuff, why he’s doing all this. The black rose was his calling card. He was a truly unhinged person!!! I’m glad that he is talking to Brother Theo.. but I’m worried about what’s going to happen to Edward. He seems like he’s been enjoying his new monk life, but... oh man. Oh man.

Note: ALL BUT CONFIRMED by Brother Theo. Oh... this is bad.

The slight changes in character and the ACTING on this guy... this is really awesome. He’s KILLING it in this role. And he’s doing a wonderful job portraying the inner turmoil and grief and panic that he must be feeling.

I’m wondering how the Garden will come back in this regard. The sins were forgotten... but the soul remembers.... that’s so interesting... you can’t pay penance, perhaps, for what you don’t know. For what you forget. The idea that this is not enough justice... it’s so intense. And that SHOT... with Edward CRYING.... that’s such an amazing image. And I want the best for him. I want him to be okay. And I don’t want him to die.

I really hope that we can come out of this with a better SENSE of justice. This is all very... over the top punitive. Sick and twisted. Bringing Lyta in as a kind of brute force crowbar is NOT good either. I don’t like that going around the law is being shown as a “good” thing.

He DID have the courage to stay at the garden. That’s... an interesting wrap-around. I really don’t want him to die, though. I want him to live through this. I want him to be able to recover, and grow, and be a better person. I don’t want him to simply die. Maybe this will inspire something in Garibaldi (and perhaps Sheridan?) though. I want them to be... less punitive. Less militaristic.

Forgiveness is a HARD THING, sure. But something to strive for, always.

S3E1 Matters of Honor

Kosh’s suit sounds... rough. Broken? Damaged? Like his pullstring is stuck in a mechanism.

IVANOVA IS THE NEW NARRATOR!!! I love that she is taking a more and more active role as things go on. And oh my god. “And it failed” is an AMAZING way to talk about Babylon 5. That’s a wild way to start this season. I love it when things have a real sense of progression - and the year changing, all of that... it really impacts the way I feel about the weight of the show.

Talia has been removed from the cast list / intro scrawl. Which breaks my heart.

NEW FRIEND is also listed in the credits! So apparently he’s sticking around. Of course he didn’t last in the (new!) medbay though.

Londo’s amazing spine. The gall of him! He wants Morden to go away so badly that it makes him look stupid. Can’t wait to see how badly this backfires on him later. The shadow folks are going to come to collect. There’s a price to pay, for all this bloodshed. All this terror. There’s the question of what they (the shadow folks) gain from all this? I’m interested to learn what exactly they want from all this.

New friend’s name is Marcus! Welcome to the show, Marcus. Interesting accent you have there. And he was working with the Pak!

Sheridan saying that the rangers should go on the offensive? MWAH. Delicious. I’m proud of him. And the White Star is beautiful... I love her already. Swarm (TTRPG character, Lancer) would drool over it. It’s sleek and small design is such a delicious contrast to Babylon 5 itself with a lot of its casette futurism designs - big and boxy, lots of buttons.

I LOVE REFA WORKING FOR MORDEN. That’s INSANE. And it makes complete sense that someone else power hungry and bloodthirsty would move to take Londo’s place. It’s like he’s realized too late. He really has realized too late. Oh Londo.

S2E22 The Fall of Night

Oh Ivanova... no family. She has Sheridan at least, and Garibaldi! And the ambassadors. I love her very much. And I love that she’s unwilling to leave Babylon 5, to betray her fellows, to join the Night Watch... she’s a wonderful character. I wish she had gotten to be with Talia. I miss Talia.

I love Sheridan’s reaction to Kosh’s true form - the idea that the Vorlons have been manipulating people from the very beginning. It really says it out loud, really makes it clear. Love it.

And Christ on a Cracker. We’re going to get Rogue Bab5. There’s no way that we’re going neutral on this. And there’s no way we’re going to be abiding by the shithole called Earthdome.

Anyways - that’s a wrap on Season 2.

I’m trying to get my thoughts together. I like the side stories - Keffler chief among them. He had a full arc, he found his own personal closure. His story is done, and it’s a catapult into the future.

I want G’kar to continue being a part of the show, and I want for him to continue doing what he can for the Narn. Seeing him advocate in the streets, speaking up against the Centauri... he’s a brave man. I know that my admiration of him will likely only grow more as the show enters Season 3.

I have a suspicion that Ivanova will join the Night Watch, if only to have a woman on the inside.  The way that the offer was given to her, and her consideration in the last shot of Season 2 really confirmed that for me. The fact that we also ENDED with Ivanova in frame suggests to me that next season we might also see a shift in station power.

Sheridan has done a good job as captain, but I think it might be time for her to take the helm. Sheridan is very much a soldier, and he does operate like one. I think that his obedience to the rules will definitely force him out - or really, his refusal to find the loopholes that Sinclair might have. I think that Sheridan will have to step down from his position, and I believe that could be an interesting direction for the show to go in. If not, then not!

I have high hopes for Vir and Lennier going into Season 3. I love the attaches, though Na’toth has pretty much disappeared from the show at this point. But the mutual expression of worry that the two of them exchanged showed a special kind of commiseration between the two that I’d like to follow. Lennier’s continued support of Delenn is also big - sometimes she’s just silly, she messes up, and he’s there for her. I think Lennier is my FAVORITE attache by far! But I look forward to Vir perhaps working AGAINST the Centauri, and taking the actions that he felt that he was too helpless to in Season 2. He’s my horse to bet on.

The Talia/Ivanova thing will HAUNT ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I hope we can get Talia back.
