Favorite OC Someone Else Made

I don’t really say much, but I do quietly enjoy some of the OCs I’ve seen around here. Guess this is a good excuse to draw a few of them.

Truthfully, I wanted to sketch up an entire “Bushroot Waifu Squad”, but honestly I have no idea how many OCs are shipped with the plant duck, so I just stuck to my fave of the bunch. She’s so cute. :3

I’m a sucker for “Liquidator Has a (Ex)Wife” headcanons, and I think Kimbra might be the best one of these. It’s fleshed out and you can’t help but sympathize with her situation... while also laughing at some of their interactions.

Both a hilarious and fascinating character, one that I’ve seen quite a bit of when browsing Darkwing stuff over the past couple years. 

This sketch here is actually a few months old, at the time I was wondering what Mal and Rosie’s dynamic would be if they existed in the same universe (both being cousins of Morgana). Obviously, they wouldn’t get along.

DWD OC Month: Day 29

OC and Canon

Let’s go with a little friendship I’d like to explore more, considering it’s between my most prominent OC and my favorite Darkwing character. 

Just so you know, this isn’t their first meeting, their first meeting was a tug-o-war at the garden store that ended with the bag of fertilizer ripping in two and Bushroot getting exposed (and bolting away from panicking patrons). 

Despite Rosella being curious about the plant man, Darkwing said “No, that’s a villain, don’t even think about it”, and well, why associate with a villain, she doesn’t get along with them. And Bushroot is sour over the incident for a bit, and he soon learns that she’s on Darkwing’s side, so there’s no way they’d be friends anyway. They cross paths a couple other times since then, but it’s usually hero-villain stuff involving Darkwing, nothing really happens between them. 

And then, one day, Rosie’s out on a walk away from the city when a sudden thunderstorm happens, and in her panic, she digs herself into the nearest building... which just so happens to be Bushroot’s greenhouse. He catches her fairly quickly and she finds herself having to reassure him that she has no intention of hurting him or his plants, and she’ll leave when the storm passes. 

Thankfully, she manages to convince him and he releases her. They strike an agreement of “I won’t try anything funny if you don’t try anything funny”, and now Reggie has to entertain her for presumably a couple of hours. 

Luckily, Rosie’s a naturally curious soul who’s interested in his vast knowledge of plant life and how some of that knowledge could help her with her own garden. Reggie’s elated that someone is actually willing to listen to him on this subject! 

And so begins their friendship, something they’re a little mum on since they’re on different sides of the good/evil battle and their respective allies wouldn’t take well to one of their own actively mingling with someone on the other side. 

I’d ask who would eventually cave and join the other’s side, but come on, Rosie would never become a villain of her own free will, so it’s more of a question of what Reggie’s going to do.

DWD OC Month: Day 10

OC’s Favorite Person

We’ll just focus on one character and one of their favorite people, given there’s a relationship that I have yet to cover, and it’s supposed to be kind of an important one among my stuffy stuffs. 

Growing up, Morgana Macawber never really payed much mind to that one cousin everyone thought was odd. They were five years apart in age, lived in different castles, and there were already a bunch of other cousins to pay attention to. She had her own ambitions, and soon enough moved to St. Canard to steal from Normals because they don’t matter and she needs the money to pay back her student loans. 

Funny enough, it was interacting with Normals that made her softer, and her dating one that made her decide to seek out the one member of the family that no one comes to gossip to, just for someone to vent to. Despite all the colorful, flowery decor, she at least felt welcome with how much Rosella was willing to listen and offer treats. 

Then, one day, Morgana commissioned Rosella to make a garden for the Shadow Chateau. Rosella agreed, and they went to choose some Monster plants to fill the garden, given that Rosie didn’t have any of those on hand. It was on the way that Morgana noticed the sneers, gossip, and insults that the townsfolk threw at Rosie, who despite the smile on her face and friendly greetings had the earth cracking beneath her feet. 

Rosie was to meet the rest of the family the next day to go to Morg’s, but they left without her, leaving her to search for the door to Morg’s place by herself. Morgana was about to go off on her family for ditching her, but they got captured by Goldenrod, who blinded Darkwing, Gosalyn, and Launchpad to make her getaway. 

Rosie eventually arrived and teamed up with Darkwing and co. to rescue the Macawbers. After they defeated Goldenrod and brought everyone back to Macawber Manor, Rosie chewed them out for ditching her and treating her like an embarrassment, and then spent the rest of the day (night?) gardening outside while everyone else redecorated inside. 

After seeing how unfairly Rosie’s been treated, Morgana decided that perhaps a change of scenery would do her good. So, she offered to let her work at the Chateau, and Rosella was up for it... though she did ask if there was a place that they could portal Rosie’s garden to, since she didn’t want anyone to wreck her hard work. Rosie gets one room in the manor and a lot that Morg found for the garden that she could go crazy in, as long as she respects the rest of Morg’s property. 

And that’s the story of how despite them basically being opposites, Morgana became Rosella’s favorite family member, roommate, and a better sister figure than Rosie’s actual sisters.

DWD OC Month: Day 4

OC’s Special Ability

Funny, I’ve been thinking on making a visual brief on Rosella’s earth magic. I’d like this colored, but IRL stuff butts in and thus we’ll have to deal with the sketches that are touched up at best. But anyway...

The most obvious manifestation of her earth magic is geokinesis. From throwing rocks to causing earthquakes, there’s no denying that this little lady can cause some serious blunt force trauma and quite a bit of destruction (it’s the non-ego-related reason Darkwing doesn’t like working with her that often). 

Other things she can do:

A bit of super strength

Teeth and claws can easily slice through rock

Change the property of the dirt she walks on (usually does it to make the ground more fertile, but sometimes she’ll zap a patch of dirt and make it a trampoline).

Burrower extraordinaire, it’s her main avenue of getting around or escaping trouble (though she has dug herself into trouble by accidentally breaking into Moliarty’s underground empire; it was a somewhat embarrassing situation of her getting captured because he ended up discovering one of her weaknesses)

Can create and grant temporary sentience to stone monsters and statues; granting permanent life to a rock is possible, but it’s much more difficult and draining for her to do so (hence why she only did it once to create her rock cat, Tuffy). 

Petrification, which is a move that she rarely uses because it disturbs her. You’d have to be a seriously depraved and disgusting person to earn her petrifying glare, and if she really hates you, you’re shattered with a snap of her fingers. 

She’s a powerhouse, but there are ways to defeat her, which we’ll cover later.

As long as he has his guitar, Strings can manipulate shadows, with Shadow being his primary attack dog--erm, cat. He can also teleport by slipping into shadows in one place and slipping out in another.

Creating light constructs, flashing light to blind opponents, energy bolts to launch at people, and not to mention that energy flash she inflicted on Strings and Shadow that made them the way they are. 

I think I’ll just stick with the superpowered OCs today. Sorry Ron and Engracia.

DWD OC Month: Day 15

Give it up for Day 15! 

OC’s Negaverse Counterpart

This was a fun one. :)

Nega-Rosella is a nasty piece of work that revels in being one of the most terrifying beings of the Negaverse. She embraces being a Monster and using her powers for destruction, though it’s partly from having a chip on her shoulder from being ostracized by her ‘glittery’ peers, who she gleefully pulled a Carrie on after having had enough (she grew up in a... radically different environment from Prime Rosie). 

Nega-Ron isn’t much better. He has a way of pinpointing weaknesses in any kind of structure and then using that to tear down the whole thing. Not to mention he just likes bombs. He’s considered an ‘architect of destruction’ in Nega St. Canard, and Nega-Megavolt hates having to fight him. 

Nega-Engracia could be considered fake sweet hiding a psychopathic side. With a sweet smile, softspoken voice, and elegant look and demeanor, she’ll shoot you down without a second thought. She’s also conditioning her children to be cold-blooded agents like her, and Nega-Steelbeak wants to save the kids from her.

Nega-Goldenrod is an honorable member of the Fairy Guard that is doing her best to protect the Normals from crazy supernatural stuff. She’s in Nega St. Canard to bring a rogue fairy to justice, but it’s hard when that rogue fairy has teamed up with one of the most infamous Monsters of the magic realm. 

Nega-Strings is a wild rocker type, with Nega-Shadow being his deadpan shadow companion. The brothers were accidentally given their powers when they startled Nega-Goldenrod, but she promised that she’d find a cure for Shadow’s condition (or at least give him the ability to switch between shadow and flesh forms). They’ve forgiven her for the folly and often help her in her endeavors. 

I’ve often thought of a situation where Negaduck manages to make a portal to the Negaverse, and recruits some Negaverse versions of people to frame the primeverse versions (like Rosella, Ron, and Engracia) and cause chaos. The Friendly Four find out about this, and come in with folks like Nega-Goldenrod and Nega-Strings and Shadow to warn Darkwing and help out.

DWD OC Month: Day 14

OC Meeting a Villain

If you’ve been following along with my stuff, you can probably guess what’s coming... after this random stupid situation I came up with:

I’ve said before that while Rosella’s burrowing tactic usually gets her out of trouble, it’s also gotten her into trouble. She once stumbled into Moliarty’s lair, had a fight with his troops where she showed off her earth magic, which was weakened when she happened upon iron ore in the lair, and then she was defeated by a cast iron frying pan and tied up in iron chains. Moliarty was quite offended that a water fowl had earth powers when subterranean creatures like his kind existed, so he started building something to remove those powers. And maybe use them to level St. Canard. 

Luckily for Rosie, she was eventually rescued. She doesn’t like talking about this situation, though, it’s embarrassing just how she was defeated by some moles and some inconveniently placed iron.  

If I had a nickel for every time Rosella accidentally broke into a supervillain lair... I’d have two nickels, but it’s weird that it happened twice (the other one was Bushroot’s greenhouse btw). 

Okay, that’s it for Moliarty’s moment in the spotlight, let’s get on to a bit more dramatic kind of meeting between an OC and a canon villain. 

Okay, technically, they met the day Ron was born, but we’re talking about him being face to face with the supervillain alter ego of his long lost brother--Megavolt. 

Ron was aware of Megavolt for years (who wouldn’t be, he often causes blackouts), but he had never taken a close look at the guy because why would you do that, he’s an electrical madman. Heck, Ron always got a little annoyed when people noted that he looked similar to the villain--to the point where dressing up like him one Halloween got Darkwing Duck chasing him. 

One day, he ends up being taken hostage by Megavolt (who had been looking up structural engineers to help him solve some structural issue with one of his inventions, and then just grabbed Ron out of his office). At some point, after Darkwing arrives on scene and a fight ensues, Ron is nearly caught in the crossfire and Darkwing ends up blurting out to Megavolt, “Be careful, that is your brother!” 

Cue awkward pause. 

There was much denial (very vehemently from Ron) at first, but after Darkwing showed them (seperately, of course, Megs is in jail at that point) several of the tests that showed, yeah, there’s a blood relation there, both had to accept it (though Megavolt still argued a bit; “How do I know you aren’t faking this just to throw me off?” “Why would I lie to you about some random guy being your brother?!”). 

Ron fell into a bit of depression over it. Yeah, sure, he now has closure for Elmo’s disappearance, but why did he have to be Megavolt of all people?

Eventually, Ron has to muster up the courage to face Elmo in jail. And well, it’s awkward, with Megavolt’s spotty memory making it a bit difficult to get some answers. Follow up visits have him getting more information over time, and eventually they just start liking each other. 

However, despite them getting reacquainted, Ron refuses to have any part in Megavolt’s criminal activity and was hesitant on letting him meet his family for a while. 

“You put that stuff aside when I’m around, got that?”

“Hmph. Killjoy.”

DWD OC Month: Day 3

Design Details...?

Ah, whatever, I’m gonna wing it.

Rosella Macawber

Funny thing, my first idea for her was more dark and brooding, being an actually respected gardener in Transylvania that deals with plants of all kinds, but that first draft’s purpose was just to be a joke character that gets smitten with Bushroot. Kind of a shallow character, and I don’t find shallow characters fun. 

(Don’t have a picture of that, sadly)

Then I thought of that one trope of ‘smiley parents with goth kid’, and decided it would be fun to reverse it. I took inspirations from characters like Rapunzel, Starfire, Ariel, and from actual people like my cousin and a little bit of myself, and trips to the craft store to figure out her general aesthetic. The first design of this idea...

...needed improving. 

My next try was current design, but she did originally have messier hair.

Regardless, I think her design communicates her basic character well. 

Ronald Sputterspark

When I first watched Comic Book Capers, my first thought on seeing Lil Running Gag was, “It’s Megavolt’s little brother!” And that’s how the Ronald Sputterspark ball got rolling.  

Ron did originally look more like Lil Running Gag design wise, but it looked awful, so I made him taller and looking more like Megs--with some differences, like the lack of buck teeth, his hair being a more blondish brown, and whiskers on his chin instead of his muzzle (that said, I do imagine an incident where Ron makes the mistake of dressing up as Megavolt for Halloween and gets caught by Darkwing). 

Clothing-wise, he takes some inspiration from Fix-It Felix (who also influenced a fair bit of his personality). I also made Ron’s primary color blue and his secondary color being yellow/tan, as a reverse of Megs’ color scheme.

But most of all... he’s meant to look like a regular, well-adjusted man. Makes for an interesting (kind of funny and also kind of sad) contrast to Megavolt.

I can’t say much about the other four, save that Strings’ gray clothing is meant to convey his dulled emotions and that he’s a bit more ‘gray’ than the typical villain (I don’t know if I succeeded at that, though), that Goldenrod totally has a Tinker Bell kind of dress under her armor, and that I just wanted Engracia to look closer to an actual chicken than a woman with a beak (fun fact, she’s a Catalana!).

DWD OC Month: Day 7

What Makes Your OC Happy?

Goldenrod: Being among nature... and also successfully taking out her target in spectacular fashion, proving the superiority of the fae!  

Engracia: Her family, especially her playful twin chicks and her brother Enrique, who’s pretty much her best friend. More on that when we get to the family prompt.

She also gets a thrill from when she gets to do an activity that requires aiming, whether it be at the gun range, a carnival, arcade, archery field, or whatever else, and showing off her sharpshooting skills. 

Ron: His family makes him happy, of course, since he loves his wife and kids. Like with Engracia, we’ll get into it more in the family prompt. 

And on a funnier note:

This rat just gets way too giddy over cool structures like bridges, unique buildings, dams, etc. Them engineering feats, amirite?

Strings/Shadow

That stupid shadow that he calls his brother is the only one who can make him smile, which considering that Strings can hardly feel emotion, is not too shabby. Music... also makes Strings close to feeling good, and Shadow loves it (it is the thing they were doing during their travels before Goldenrod’s attack).

And then there’s Rosella, who has had to create her own happiness while living in a society that she doesn’t fit into, often by creating the things that suit her tastes herself:

These things could have been in the special abilities prompt, being some of her hobbies, but I wanted to focus on the superpowers that time, haha.

And after moving to St. Canard, yeah, she enjoyed the big adventures like trying superheroing for the first time (even if she was having a spat with Darkwing and being a pain for everyone else, especially Morgana, at that time), making new friends of different stripes, and seeing the sights, but there are also smaller things that she appreciates with childlike wonder:

Launchpad often being the one to introduce her to new stuff, like cotton candy and Hamburger Hippo.

She loves hummingbirds, she thinks they’re adorable. 

She loves music and dancing. Also, she kind of accidentally made friends with Bushroot (long and kind of awkward story). 

Despite things that can and do bring her down, Rosella just loves life. 

And lastly, I’ll end this post with Rosie and her cat:

Her name is Tuffy and she’s made of rocks. In trying to create a familiar like her classmates, Rosella imbued some life force into a pile of rocks... which made her suffer from magic exhaustion for a week, but she got a pet out of it. 

Tuffy’s friendly, but kind of sassy and mischievous in that classic cat way.

DWD OC Month: Day 6

Greatest Fears

I think I’ll post this one a little early. 

Good news, Ron and Engracia are back for this one! Goldenrod and Strings/Shadow will sit this one out. Anyhoozles...

Rosella

A bit of a double whammy nightmare for Rosie, where she’s not only drowning (thanks to her weakness to water and a certain sister that bullied her, she has a fear of water), but no one is bothering to help her no matter how much she reaches out (a fear that she’s not worthy of being loved). 

Ron

I bet there are plenty of folks who fear the day they mess up at their jobs and disaster occurs. Especially since Ron’s in structural engineering, a screw-up of his could easily kill people, and that’s not something he wants on his shoulders. 

Sometimes he has nightmares where he turns out to have the same powers as big brother Megavolt, and he either can’t control them or goes insane, ending up killing people in the process. This is a bit of an irrational fear, seeing as he did help set up that static electricity experiment and once he remembers it, he can put two and two together. But, then again, he’s got a lot of worries about the whole “Megavolt is my brother” thing, he’s just not usually a gloomy Gus about it. 

On another note, he does have one obvious fear that a father has--something bad happening to any of his kids. If one of them disappeared, he’d freak. It was bad enough when his brother disappeared, imagine how distraught he’d be if he lost one of his kids. 

Engracia

She’s not quite over the incident where a FOWL agent nearly took down SHUSH from the inside and took advantage of her when she was naïve. Take a wild guess on who that agent was.

That awkward moment when a sudden thunderstorm hits during your countryside walk, and you mistakenly break into a supervillain’s lair in your efforts to get out of the rain. 

This stupid thing was lying around in my files, and while I meant to save it for after the Morg and Rosie pics... this just called a little louder, so I caved and colored it up.

DWD OC Month: Day 26

FREE SPACE

Yeesh, been pooped for the last couple days. Anyway, let’s just have some old miscellaneous doodles of Rosie because she’s the one I draw the most.  

Confession time, I actually drew up sketches of Rosie set to “When Will My Life Begin” from Tangled (albeit with some altered lyrics to fit Rosie’s life a little more). Here’s a couple of my favorite sketches of that set. 

This was before I remembered the “cat polisher” joke in Jail Birds, and now it’s extra funny to me because here’s the one person in the world who polishes her cat

I don’t talk much about Rosie’s hair, but it’s certainly a wild mane. 

Anyway, there are other sketches from that set scattered among the other prompts, I’m sure you have some idea of what to look for. Dunno if I’ll ever color the entire thing, it’s about four pages of random hobby stuff based on a Disney song. 

Rosie would totally love Spike. She better be careful, though, Tuffy might get jealous. Also, I have this stupid exchange in my head:

Rosella: If you’re not going to be nice to him, I’m taking him home! *picks up Spike and marches out the door*

Bushroot: W-Wha--HEY!

Was reading a thing, and it prompted me to draw Rosie in a suit. Doesn’t look half-bad, actually, though she prefers dresses. 

It is a crime that Baby Pictures wasn’t a prompt. What else am I supposed to do with Baby Rosie dressed in spooky baby stuff because her family couldn’t predict that she’d be more interested in bright colors than in black?

I have more thingies, but I’m not going to overwhelm you.

DWD OC Month: Day 18

Favorite Food

These were a bit harder to draw than I thought they would be. XP No Ron or Goldenrod today, I couldn’t really come up with anything for either of them. 

Rosella has a sweet tooth in general, but her favorite out of all the sweets has to be ice cream. Doesn’t matter which flavor, she’s into the frozen, creamy goodness. She has to be careful not to get brain freeze though. 

On another note:

She’s also a prolific bug eater. She even has a chameleon tongue to catch any unfortunate flies that happen to be hanging around when she’s got the munchies (huh, forgot to put that in the design details prompt... oh, well, you know she’s weird). 

Strings likes instant ramen. So does Shadow, but the poor cat can’t eat in his condition. 

And Engracia? Well, she likes her brother’s cooking in general. Enrique’s pretty darn good at cooking, he does own a restaurant after all, and it’s one of the best Mexican restaurants in St. Canard.

DWD OC Month: Day 5

OC Weaknesses

Last time, we went over the powers of Rosella, Goldenrod, Strings and Shadow. Impressive powers, but how does one defeat them? 

Well...

Rosella

Strong as she may be, she can get overconfident and reckless, and thus, has to be brought down to earth with some of the following.

Her biggest weakness is water. Constant exposure to it like being hosed, rained on, or thrown into a body of water erodes at her strength and magic until she can barely move. She also can’t swim, girl sinks like a rock (which is ironic, since she’s a duck). 

The first time she met the Liquidator, it did not end well for her. Darkwing had to come to her rescue. 

She also doesn’t do well against certain metals, namely iron and silver. Granted, the latter is a common weakness for Monsters in general, but the former is rarer, and a weakness she oddly shares with her sisters. 

They typically manifest as a rash when she touches them (the purer the metal, the worse the rash (or even burn if it’s totally pure)), but being chained up or put into a cage made of either metal can also take a toll on her magic.

Want to know who else doesn’t do well against iron?

Goldenrod

Well, being a fairy makes this an obvious weakness of hers. It’s why I had Darkwing fight her with a cast iron frying pan in that one picture. And ultimately, the first time Darkwing defeated her was not with the pan, but like this:

Luckily for her, she doesn’t get burned when touching iron (varies from fairy to fairy), but her magic goes completely kaput when chained up or put in an iron cage. 

She also doesn’t like salt, as well as certain plants and herbs. But I guess her biggest weakness is her tendency to underestimate Normals, because after all, fairies have been taught that Normals are only good for being playthings. 

And lastly...

Strings and Shadow

While a difficult duo to defeat, there are two ways to weaken or defeat them, the first being bright light.

Like anyone else, Strings would have a hard time seeing in bright light, but it outright hurts Shadow and tends to limit his capabilities. Sometimes, if the light is bright enough, Shadow will fade away and not be able to return until Strings casts a large enough shadow (how long it takes depends on the time of day the bright light happened). 

Secondly, and this is kinda dumb... take away Strings’ guitar. 

No guitar, no control of the shadows. Even Shadow, being the most independent of shade, can’t get very far or deal as much damage without the guitar to give him a boost. And sometimes, wrist cramps or hurt hands can make them stumble. 

Taking the guitar is easier said than done, though. 

Again, Ron and Engracia sit this one out, but maybe they’ll be in the next prompt.
