Have decided (probably due to 6.0 shenanigans) that I’ll capitulate and go with the Ancient Greek theme for my Azem, after all, and I think I’m going with Eris as her name. Mostly because I love the irony, considering what the Greek figure symbolizes.
Eris is not a good figure in Greek tales, more or less destructive chaos personified. She’s selfish, spiteful, and delights in creating strife and misery among humankind as well as her fellow immortals. And one day I thought to myself: doesn’t that sound similar to how Azem would’ve been viewed by the Convocation, what with their refusal to partake in the summoning of Zodiark? With their disappearance and seeming abandonment of their duty? Canonically, we already know Azem to be a bit of an outlier, a black sheep whose unorthodox, at times ‘chaotic’ (hoh hoh) tendencies lent them a reputation that seemed to precede them. I can see what would have initially been viewed as a quirk (that apparently comes with the job/title) becoming seen as a legitimate issue come the Final Days, when the Convocation chose the path it did, only for Azem to not only oppose the decision, but maybe even attempt to convince others to oppose it, as well. History, had the Ancients had been given the chance to write it, would’ve most likely decried Azem as a traitor, accused them of caring not for their fellow man, of being a - wait for it - bringer of and reveler in strife and discord. Just like the Greek goddess.
And there’s a lot of good irony there, I think. If you have a character named Eris, anyone halfway familiar with the Greek deities is most likely gonna know what to expect: a villain. And I love the idea of claiming that name, so to speak, for a character who, at first glance, may have fit that bill, only to utterly defy it in the end by way of the truth. It would also serve to explain further why Hades was so inspired to keep Azem’s memory alive by way of that crystal: to clear their name, in a way, and immortalize them as the person they truly were, rather than what history would’ve made them out to be.
And Odzaya - heck, the canonical WoL - fits that bill, too. Everywhere they go, chaos genuinely does follow at their heels. Look at the societies they’ve changed, the status quos they’ve shaken up, the outright revolutions they’ve lead. The blood that’s been spilled in the name of a cause they’ve headed. The deaths that have come as a result. There are absolutely people out there in the world who have looked upon the WoL as just that: this source of chaos, a threat to their way of life, this bringer of war and strife (looking at you, Sharlayan and Garlemald). And they’re not totally wrong! Odzaya specifically has a long history of being a chaotic element; she’s made herself a thorn in more people’s sides than she’d care to name. It’s the reason she ended up in Eorzea to begin with, because she ruffled the wrong feathers, stabbed the wrong face, and had to flee before she got caught. She has a checkered past and, admittedly, even a bit of a ‘bloodlust’ in her, if you want to call it that (so yes, Zenos, that’s a point in your corner). At first glance, girly could seem a little villainous, or at least antiheroic; certainly a consistent source of potential trouble. And I love that! I love that there are multiple ways to view the WoL and their behavior and actions, just as there were multiple ways to view Azem and theirs. And I really love the idea of that complexity being personified in a name that implies the obvious, even plays into it a little bit, only to ultimately defy it.

(Photo by Roseography. Saw it and thought it a really neat representation of Eris (left) and especially Odzaya (right), so I added it for flavor lol.)
