Incoming Call, Part 1
Wavecrash pushed semself up off the gigantic makeshift beanbag chair set up in the warehouse hearing Sparkplug enter. “Pluggie! How were the cookies?”
“Half of ‘em were blacker than tar, the other half were... okay. Ness’s dad said they’re good for someone who didn’t know what Earth cooking was at all.” She began walking laps around the inside of the warehouse. “He also said I should start just calling him Subi. Feels welrd, though, since Ness keeps calling him ‘Dad’. I feel like I’ve gotta call him Dad, too.”
“Humans are weird.” Sey shrugged. “Wanna play Plaguesim?”
“I don’t want to stay still.”
“Alright.”
A ringtone played.
Sparkplug’s optics widened. “That’s my ringtone.”
“That doesn’t sound good.” Despite Wavecrash’s masked face, the distress was clear in seir voice. “You think someone’s tapping into your telepathy?”
“No, it isn’t in my head... it’s from somewhere else.” Her working optic was fixed on the long table, where all the video game consoles lay.
Ness’ tablet was face-up, emitting the ringtone.
Wavecrash looked down at Sparkplug, hesitant to even touch the tablet. “You think Ness figured out how to contact us?”
Sparkplug grabbed the tablet - more like the size of a small mobile phone in her hands - and pressed a finger to the ‘accept call’ button. “Only one way to find out.”
A swipe upwards.
Two voices at once, one much lower pitched than the other. “Ness!”
Sparkplug froze. This was... not Ness contacting her, or Wavecrash, clearly.
“...Ness?” The lower pitched voice spoke. “Is this Mr. Lumwood again?”
Sparkplug spoke carefully, as if the wrong word would set off a bomb beneath her. “Uh... no?”
A gasp from someone on the other end. “Vocaloid real.”
Wavecrash leaned closer to Sparkplug and the tablet, and Sparkplug tilted her head to one side in confusion. “...what’s a Vocaloid?”
The lower-pitched voice spoke. “Hold on, lemme just send you something.”
Sparkplug awaited something to appear on the tablet, just like before. Within ten seconds, a notification appeared, showing her a link, on the tablet.
And another notification appeared, in her brainspace telepathy.
Sparkplug tilted her head all the way back to look at Wavecrash. “They just telepathically contacted me, what the slag.”
“Okay, this definitely isn’t anyone Ness knows. Who are you?”
Wavecrash piped up, “Oh, no, we know Ness! We just...”
And Sparkplug was the one to say it.
“We... might not exactly be human.”

Spotlight: Rise of the Radiotrons
Here it is folks, the first fan canon spotlight, showcasing Rise of the Radiotrons created by sleeveev! You can find this over at @riseoftheradiotrons and also on AO3! This is a long post, fair warning.
Q) Give us a run down of your cont! What's it about, what's it called, what's it like?
the cont, despite being called Rise of the Radiotrons, revolves around five main groups of characters, and the mystery that accidentally intertwines all of them. a lot of false identities, undiscovered pasts, mystery that you need to read all the way through to really uncover. it also takes place during the attrition phase of the Autobot-Decepticon war, and Megatron and Optimus are... dead. but... weren't they made immortal by the Eternal Surge? where are they?
Q) What characters take the lead here? Any personal favorites?
characters that take the lead? hoo, boy, there's a lot. and be warned, this is OC-heavy. Wavecrash, Blackarachnia, Sparkplug, Pascal, and Ness make up the Earth detective team, the first to investigate the Radiotrons: Nanotube, Quicksilver, Greenscreen, and [REDACTED] (that is not their name, you will learn it later!).
Starscream, Moonkiller, and Pharma investigate a series of rust-related murders, later with the help of Eclipse and Terraform. the two they investigate? two hulking beings that carry a rust of sheer destruction of anything metal, Turbulence and someone known only as The Crimson Doctor. the third part is mostly with just a few characters. Dial-Up and Absolute Zero are in a cat-and-mouse chase, Dial-Up attempting to capture Absolute Zero and return him to the prison he escaped from. other 'bots come into this story, including Pylon, Airachnid, Suture, and Cyclonus, but they are not the main focus.
Turbulence. this motherfucker. this moldy bitch.
my personal favorites? i love Sparkplug, i love my little gaming PC gal. The Crimson Doctor has also grown on me quite a bit. i'm gonna make fat robots and you can't stop me.
Sparkplug above, Crimson Doctor (Crim) below
Q) I love how he isn’t crimson at all.
oh you'll learn why he's crimson
Q) Ominous! Is there a bigger point to this, like a theme or some catharsis? Or is it just fluffy fun?
a bigger point to this? well, i have quite my fair share of trauma for being in a military family - being on the home front of a war i never even learned about until i was like 12. i wanted to show the horrors of attrition above all, because attrition is the part of war that everyone seems to forget, but is possibly the most dangerous part of it. everyone's killing each other over resources, dying of preventable diseases, resources are spread thin among soldiers and thinner among civilians. it also lets new, perhaps worse groups arise from the dust.
war was never about who was right. it was about who could live longer. and RotR, with its rampant killings that people can't even begin to investigate until their leaders are toppled from their thrones and complete anarchy reigns among military sites, is a testament to that.
war was the cause for part of the namesake of the Radiotrons themselves - the Great Radiation Crisis. war was where everything went wrong
Q) How long have you been working on it?
now, for the slightly less dark - it varies from character to character! while the official plot of RotR was established on August 25 this year, some 'bots go much further back - Pascal's earliest concepts were made on May 8, Nanotube's were made on April 25, and The Crimson Doctor's roots go as far back as a character called The Crimson-Eyed Doctor, a character created on Dec 11, 2019 (happy belated birthday, Crim!).
Q) You’re very meticulous with your dates!
i lose track of all time otherwise
Q) Give us a behind-the-scenes look! Show us a secret ;))
behind the scenes.
this is a mystery cont.
THERE'S A LOT BEHIND THE SCENES.
i will start with some no-context spoilers, here.
and, now for something a bit more genuinely secret.
whether this is a crimson doctor or a red herring, you decide.
Q) Where did you draw inspiration from? What canons, what other fiction, what parts of real life?
this varies from subtle to shameless.
my cont would fit best in an comic format, so it makes sense that i was inspired by IDW - and that it was my entry into the TF fandom! there is also some TFA bits in there, but the majority of it is personal robot worldbuilding, with a couple sprinkles of headcanons and OCs taken from Afterburn, a cont made by a longtime friend of mine.
other fiction i took inspiration from is mostly in the character designs. Blackarachnia was loosely inspired by Tawna from Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (you went through such a good revamp sweetie. neon lesbian.). if you can't tell that Turbulence took inspiration from Cioccolata from JJBA: Golden Wind, i don't know what to tell you. Crim took less inspiration from a character and more from a trope - the "ever-obedient villain subordinate". i just sucked all of the homoeroticism out of it, and also decided to give him more of a self than just someone who serves the villain.
here's Tawna (specifically Crash Bandicoot 4), one of the big inspirations for Blackarachnia's design! we don't talk about your past sweetie.
and Blackarachnia headshot to compare, because her fullbody is still in progress.
i am sharing this specific image of cio, one of turb's inspos, because i BASED A TURB PIECE OFF OF IT.
real life? RADIATION, RADIATION. i have radiation and radioactive things and the PERIODIC TABLE as a special interest and it SHOWS. it's all radiation. even the names. Quicksilver comes from mercury, Starborn comes from all elements being created from stars in space, Nanotube comes from carbon nanotubes, and [REDACTED] comes from... well, you don't know yet. there's also the whole attrition war thing, for real life inspiration, too.
Q) Show off something you're really proud of, a particular favorite part of your cont.
this piece of Eclipse and Turbulence('s hand), for one
(the image is at the end of the post under a readmore, as it contains eye trauma, eye touching, and roboblood)
and another thing i am particularly proud of are all my worldbuilding posts! they look like textbook entries kinda but i really really love em. here's one of them, though there are many more on the blog!
lastly, my favorite character introduction post. if you know Afterburn, you may be pleasantly surprised seeing this.
Q) Ah, that guy.
fun fact about RotR Absolute Zero! his color palette is taken from a diagram of a human heart. here is the motherfucker in question,
Q) What other fan canons do you love and why? Would you like to see them interviewed?
Afterburn. my best friend made this i can't just NOT advertise it. go look at it there's murderers and there's an OC that's actually very inspired by not one but two of my creations (the original OC he was a fanformer of, and his altmode - I'd had thoughts of various greenhouse 'bots like that). @transformersafterburn. please don't simp for Abzero. or maybe do. he's a better option than Turbulence.
Mirror Mirror. found at @transformers-mirror-mirror, it's got so many epic character designs and realistically sized altmodes despite not having realistically sized altmodes this makes me go happy flappy and is also inspiring a future project of mine, also Shattered Glass!
NEW PRIMES OF CYBERTRON. RITO I LOVE YOUR CONT SO MUCH. i summed it up in "transformers ungunned" but THERE IS MUCH MORE GO CHECK IT OUT AFTER YOU FINISH READING THIS INTERVIEW @thenamesblurrito
Q) [insert flattered keysmashing from me, creator of New Primes of Cybertron, otherwise known as TF:SNAP]
Thank you very much veev! Everyone go check out Rise of the Radiotrons! Stay tuned for next week, when we’ll get to see some Shattered Glass...
(aforementioned image under the cut, warning for eye trauma, eye touching, and roboblood)

Incoming Call, Part 2
Wavecrash learned just about all sey could possibly learn about Earth culture that day.
The two humans talking to sem and Sparkplug called themselves Red and Orion. Red was blind, and usually relied on text-to-speech to know what was going on, so this was a nice change for her. Orion wasn’t, but liked the sound of his voice - he was now on some sort of human body-altering chemical to give himself the outward appearance his inward self wanted. There was a human term for it, but frankly, the thought that one would not be able to change their outward appearance and not just go about their lives without facing severe public disapproval for it was absurd. Back on Cybertron, there were shops dedicated to those sort of bodily changes, voicebox shops and what were called ‘cute-kibble shops’.
Red and Orion seemed very interested in Cybertronian customs, and wanted to learn about some before they taught the two about Earth. Sparkplug didn’t have much to say, but Wavecrash had plenty, and told them about the various Cybertronian holidays that revolved around key events in history or simply to please the populace to give them time off.
In exchange, Red and Orion told sem and Sparkplug about birthdays (how redundant, sey thought, celebrating every year) and what they called ‘ubercheap chocolate days’, which were February 15th and December 26th. There were the religious holidays they celebrated, the names of which didn’t sound very much like Earthen Common - but Red said they weren’t. They were apparently in Hebrew, a much older Earth language.
There was a long conversation about Earth media, and Wavecrash telling them about Cybertronian media in return. At that point, Sparkplug was busy playing what Orion called “cool math games” on herself.
And then, it finally got there.
Red’s voice was confused. “So... what are you, if not human?”
Wavecrash glanced away from the tablet. “Well... we’re Cybertronians. From Cybertron.”
“Yeah, we kinda gathered that.” Orion. “But what are you?”
“We’re... mechanical. Well, not quite mechanical. But we’re made of metals.”
Orion again. “Vocaloid real.”
Wavecrash shifted in seir chair so sey were holding the tablet above seir head, looking up at it. “I still don’t know what a Vocaloid is. You just sent the video to Sparkplug, and she’s not sharing.”
Red decided to explain, “Vocaloid are AI usually created in Japan by Japanese programmers and song producers, and then they have those Vocaloids, y’know, sing things with their robot voices. Hatsune Miku is the most popular Vocaloid and people have been saying she’s the new creator of things made by shitty people, like Minecraft and Harry Potter and Amazon.”
“No idea what any of those are, and I don’t want to ask.”
“Good.” Orion sounded relieved. “Harry Potter and its real creator are a mess.”
Silence on all ends. There was no intent to go into a Harry Potter discussion.
Orion again. “Where... where is Ness, anyway? Don’t tell me you’ve kidnapped fem. I’ll kick your ass if you have one-”
“We haven’t kidnapped fem, fey’re fine! Fey’re out investigating things with... two other Cybertronians. Sparkplug’s friend, and someone who came here like a week ago and is a very widely feared assassin.”
Red, to Orion. “You are definitely not winning that fight.”
Orion’s voice sounded almost disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to win a fight against some robot aliens. “Well, there goes that. But when Ness and your friends come back, tell us? We wanna talk to them.”
Wavecrash looked over at Sparkplug, still absolutely enamored with some game called Papa’s Bakeria. “Yeah... sure. I think they’ll like hearing about Earth things.”

Bringing Back the Catalyst
Wavecrash bolted.
Sey ran as fast as seir pedes could take sem, a bag of bismuth chips in one servo.
Ness looked up from feir spot next to Sparkplug, playing Pokemon Emerald. “Crash Bandicoot!”
“I still have no idea what a bandicoot is.” Sey skidded to a halt, dropping seir bismuth chips on the ground. Sparkplug’s eyes immediately went to the chips.
“So fey weren’t lying about the bismuth chips.” She pushed herself up off the ground as Wavecrash sat down to better meet her height.
“There was a giant box labeled with nothing but a picture of a bismuth crystal. I tied the string. ” Ness shrugged. “What else was there?”
“Someone named Nanotube. Never seen her before in my life. She claims to be from some third new faction that’s apparently rising from the ashes now that the Autobots and Decepticons are fighting amongst themselves.”
“Anything else? A name, a location?” Sparkplug added.
“The Radiotrons.”
“That’s it?” She leaned back against the wall. “What are they gonna do, attack us with radio waves?”
“Radio could mean anything.” Ness shut feir Gameboy Advance SP. “’Radi’ just means light, so for all we know, they could just be some nutcase cult that can’t pose a threat because its members are all too egotistical and can’t work together.”
“Cult?” Pascal peeked its head in.
“They like light motifs.” Ness shrugged, watching as Pascal climbed up and sat on a large crate resting against the wall of the warehouse. “Makes them look holy.”
“Well, I couldn’t get much. She’s dangerous. You see this?” Wavecrash gestured to seir arm. “I’m gonna have to call down Coil to take a look at this. But she’s got these... these weird liquid bombs that shred away at almost anything when they explode. I had to pull out the Soundspeed Cannon to beat her.”
“You’d better clean off any possibly trace of liquid left on you. And hope it doesn’t shred the cleaning supplies.” Sparkplug was lacing and unlacing her fingers together, in and out.
“Well, we have Nanotube. We have the Radiotrons. And if this is an entire new faction, I’ve got a feeling there’s a lot more of a threat than just Nanotube there.” Pascal tapped its chin with a finger.
“We’ll have to start investigating.”

...And Turn To Page 1
A blast of... something was shot at Wavecrash. It scratched seir left arm and left a solid dent in the wall of the ship, a dent with tons of little spikes, as if the projectile was a large ball of razor blades.
The clatter of lots of tiny hard things hitting the ground. It definitely might’ve been razor blades. Hopefully they didn’t do as much damage to sem as they did to Ness.
The mystery Cybertronian gradually stood up, rubbing the spot where their handle was torn right off. Their empty mask-eyes showed no pupils, but Wavecrash could almost feel their gaze burning through seir left hand - the one holding the handle.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“Your ship crashed.”
“It- of fragging course it did. When can I ever trust Starborn to refill the fuel tanks?” They punched the wall - once at course and once at Starborn. The first punch didn’t do much, but the second left a dent in the wall - or, rather, lots of tiny dents looking like one huge dent.
What the hell was causing this?
“Plug, Ness! Run!”
“There’s more of you?! Well, this won’t be as easy as I thought.” Another blast of that something. This one hit Wavecrash’s arm again, and nearly blasted the forearm off the upper arm. It seemed to be like some sort of capsule that shattered upon impact. Shrapnel from the explosion embedded itself in Wavecrash’s arm, the ship walls, crates of Cybertronian food.
A surge of power went through Wavecrash’s arm, and sey threw the torn-off handle in seir hands at them at unnatural speed. They raised their cannon arm to blast it back, but weren’t fast enough, and a solid crunch was heard as the impact rendered the cannon useless. A clear liquid, slightly metallic and tinted dark grey, leaked out, and scraped away the paint and metal as it went. They desperately waved the arm around, trying to fling this liquid at Wavecrash, presumably, but sem hiding behind a crate of Crystal Bismuth Chips did the trick.
“Okay, answer me before I throw some sonic-speed bismuth at you. What’s your name?”
No answer. Another capsule blast headed right for sem - they must have a backup cannon.
Sey grabbed a couple party-sized bismuth chip bags in one servo, and let the power surge through seir hand as they rocketed towards the other. The bags burst, sonic-speed bismuth bags making a good improvised grenade.
Dripping with strange grey fluid, orange Energon trickling down their plating in small rivulets, they reluctantly follow Wavecrash’s demands.
“I am Nanotube. I am neither Autobot, nor Decepticon. A new faction has appeared, ready to take full advantage of this new chaos, and make use of all this potential we’ve desperately pushed away.”
Wavecrash gradually stepped out from behind the crate, noticing Nanotube was telling the truth. The symbol she bore on her shoulder was neither Autobot red nor Decepticon purple.
It was green. Two large triangles served as eyes, and vents rested at the bottom of the emblem’s face, what appeared to be a crown fused with the top of its head.
“I represent and bring forth the rise of the Radiotrons.”

Spiders and Stick Bugs, Part 3
“And thus, fear of her spread throughout Cybertron and beyond.”
Ness, sitting comfortably on Blackarachnia’s head, nodded. “Why is she here, then?”
Pascal tried not to look intensely nervous as it spoke, “...I believe it is to bring me back to the Decepticon forces so there is no way of me spreading any more crucial information.”
“It’s not.”
“It’s what?”
Blackarachnia sighed, repeating herself. “It’s not. I was sent here against my will because my entire team was killed and I managed to come back alive. And Starscream decided that it was because I’d killed them, for some Primus-forsaken reason. So I was exiled here.”
Wavecrash shrugged. “That’s some weird logic on why they exiled you, but Megatron’s been going senile anyways.”
“You could say the same about your beloved Optimus.”
“He is not senile.”
“And Cryogen’s son Bulb has been found and safely placed into custody, no longer a threat to the galaxy.”
Wavecrash went quiet for a minute. “...he has?”
“No, far from it. We barely even know what he looks like.” Pascal swung its legs back and forth, sitting on a metal crate. “It’s an expression.”
“Ohhhhh.” Seir one large optic widened in realization, then a second later, sey glared at Blackarachnia. “Don’t insult Optimus like that!”
“I’m trapped here on Earth for the rest of my life, I might as well slander a military leader or two while I’m at it.”
Ness climbed down from Blackarachnia’s head, careful to avoid the eyes on the sides of her head. Pascal hopped down from its crate and pulled Sparkplug and Wavecrash into a corner.
“C’mere. Private ‘bot talk.” Its voice dropped to almost a whisper. “Do you think it’s safe having her around?”
Blackarachnia recoiled in disgust after a ‘get stickbugged lol’ became a Rickroll.
Ness had a shit-eating grin on feir face. “It’s called ‘stickrolled’.”
“You hunk of scrap. I’ve been bamboozled.”
Sparkplug pointed back towards the two. “I don’t see her as much of a threat.”
“Yeah, Ness seems to be doing just fine making sure she doesn’t kill any of us. Wavecrash looks back at the two. Blackarachnia is holding Ness in one servo. They’re discussing something privately. “And she said she doesn’t want to be here either way.”
Pascal sighed. “One week. She gets one week here.”
“Pass!” Ness waved at it. “Blackarachnia’s wondering if she can take the attic.”
“...Two weeks.”

Enter The Wreckage...
“Wavecrash! We’ve found something!”
Sparkplug waved sem over, while Ness was still investigating the podship wreck. The recording device fey’d found was still in Sparkplug’s hand.
“What’ve you found? Something Cybertron-related?”
“No, it’s a box of your favorite Crystal Bismuth Chips. Yes it’s Cybertron-related.” Sparkplug gestured to the wreckage. A symbol on the front deemed it property of ‘Cybertron’s Radioactive Waste Disposal Team’.
“...disposal team? Since when was radioactive waste a bad thing?!”
“Well, recently, there’s been an influx in radioactive waste, thanks to all the crazy war-weapons being pumped out by the boxful. And Cybertronians finally figured out that not only can radioactive material turn non-radioactive material radioactive, but it can harm Cybertronians. Lately, more Cybertronians have been dying from long-term effects of heightened radiation exposure than they have from the war... partly because the war’s been put on hold. But, well, now it’s advised to stay away from radioactive waste as much as possible.”
Ness managed to worm feir way back out of the wreckage. “There’s a Cybertronian back there! And... an awful lot of Crystal Bismuth Chips.” Fey landed on the ground with an oof, managing to get back up after coughing up dark grey dust.
Sparkplug helped fem stand up, “You handle this, Wavecrash. You’re the one here who can actually chop through this.”
“You got it.” Wavecrash flashed them a thumbs-up, tossing Ness feir noise-canceling headphones as sey slowly started tearing away at the wreckage.
The sound of tearing through metal, and then... something akin to pulling off a bike handle. Just ripping off an entire bike handle.
“Found ‘em! Oof! They’re a little feisty!”
Sounds of metal-on-metal clashing.
“Plug, Ness! Run!”

Cast?
Oh, boy, oh boy. I still have the ancient RotR doc, circa August 2020, that details all the early concepts. A total of four characters were scrapped, all of them medics.
Ratchet
Old, famous Autobot medic currently residing on Mars.
Fled to Mars rather recently, after a particularly nasty Energon shortage at the planet he was stationed on.
He's tired. He needs a fucking nap.
The only known survivor of a Decepticon attack that is an in-universe war crime - bombing of an unaligned medical facility.
Rumor spread of possible other survivors, as bodies of some of the supposed victims were never found. Due to the fact that one of those bodies was that of his up-and-coming conjunx, he's desperately hoping that some of these rumors are true.
He doesn't want to hope, and yet he wants to hope so badly that there was someone else out there.
Coil
Autobot medic, assistant and partner to Ratchet. Currently residing on Mars with him. They fled the same planet together.
Spry and peppy, quite unlike her tired, decrepit partner. Many are surprised to find that she's only a bit younger than he is.
She's an optimist - always looks the best into every situation. She is, however, willing to pull out a concussive energy beam if you try to kill the vibe. Pessimistic Ratchet has nearly been shot by her quite a few times.
She's part of the reason Ratchet still has some sliver of hope all this time. That, and that Ratchet's a lonely old man.
Subwoofer
Recently graduated Autobot medic who transforms into an entire speaker system, because even back then my altmodes were wild.
Originally headed for Mars, but due to a podship issue, had to land on Earth, hoping he would find some way to either contact Ratchet on Mars or fix his podship so he could arrive.
Interests include making music, keeping things organized, and playing video games with the human friends and Sparkplug.
Initially was going to be the cast medic, and tie the Earth storyline to Ratchet's. Wavecrash took the medic spot after the Ratchet storyline was cut, because I had enough POVs as it was and I didn't want to make things to complicated.
Pylon
A Decepticon medic who formerly worked in the same medical facility as Absolute Zero and Suture.
Rather underdeveloped, only bare characteristics down (quiet, unfriendly, bad reputation of medical malpractice).
Originally going to serve as a red herring for something but quickly got removed, as I wanted to try offering clues rather than red herrings.
The thing they were going to be a red herring for, though, is still in. :)
