last time at pia’s place, her daughter hester got a little taller and there was suddenly a cat.

dickens is a wee bit dramatic.

it’s amazing how inspired pia feels after a date with cameron. she’s so inspired in fact that she’s able to finally, finally sit down and finish the novel she has been working for nearly her entire adult life.

it’s her best work yet (and not just because it’s her only work).

having an excellent relationship with one’s boyfriend shouldn’t preclude one from inviting over one’s former (?) lover for strictly business purposes, right?

i’m not saying that pia’s former (?) romantic relationship with francis isn’t clouding her judgement vis-à-vis his suitability as a bookstore employee but…

well, i guess cameron isn’t the only man in pia’s life able to inspire self-improvement. one afternoon with francis on the job and pia’s bookstore gains its first two levels.

francis threatening to beat up the customers if they leave the queue isn’t bad for business either.

hester: mommy, how come I get in trouble at school because i take too long to do my homework but you don’t get in trouble for taking ages to finish your book?

pia: there’s a difference between doing and creating, sweetie. one’s ability to create cannot be judged by minutes in a day.

hester: don’t you mean days in a year? Or years in a decade? Because it’s been a really loooooooong—

pia: hush up and eat your dinner pancakes.

one of hester’s favorite topics is school, especially now she is enrolled at Gravely Academy™️. she in particular finds great pleasure in discussing the poor grades of her fellow students. hester can’t imagine not being in the running for the Christian Gravely Septuple A+ Award for Academic Achievements, Accomplishments, and All Around Ascendancy in Ambition™️.

pia tries to remind her daughter that it is the love for learning itself that should be driving her devotion to school. she had hoped that Gravely Academy™️ would emphasize the same, but based on hester’s conversation (as well as several emails from the academy’s esteemed principal to the parents criticizing the quality of their “stock”), that may not be the case.

francis is growing as a person too. he manages to earn his very first talent badge at the tender age of 65.
