Final project: Write a short paper (4 pages double-spaced) and produce a concept illustration about a key issue in the Los Angeles metro area. Students will apply what they have learned from the course readings and discussions to better understand one of the central urban processes we have studied. Choose between these major processes: • Segregation (Massey & Denton, Logan & Stults 2011) • Criminalization/militarization of urban space (Davis, SSRC-Portrait of LA County, Dunn) • Immigrant enclaves (Portes and Manning, Lin and Chiong, Avila, Ocampo) • Gentrification (KCET City Rising, Lin) • Homelessness/housing crisis (Logan and Molotch, KCET City Rising, Davis) You will assemble some empirical data through academic sources and make sense of this data using the relevant assigned reading(s). Aim for about one page on the empirical data and 2-3 pages on your analysis of that data using course readings. The project will include an accompanying concept illustration, a visual expression of what you have come to understand about the topic. This can be a photo, drawing, collage – anything; keep in mind it has to be submitted electronically. With your permission I will share it on the @streetsociology Instagram account, where you can find many examples of prior student concept illustrations from PCC. If you want me to tag you in the post let me know. Step I: Pick and topic and find recent EMPIRICAL DATA • Find scientific data about your issue within LA County. You might want to focus on one neighborhood or compare across different cities (or different times). Follow what is possible depending on the data you CAN find. You may only include data from scientific sources (not real estate or market research data like Zillow). Stick to the sources listed below. You will narrow down to about 3-4 key data points that you can discuss and analyze for your paper. Sources: • Neighborhood data: start with: https://usc.data.socrata.com/stories/s/About-NDSC/rrwd-r28f/ • Click on “Los Angeles” and then “Enter the Map” – there are MANY variables to explore across neighborhoods and most of them you can explore over the past 10 years or so. • Current research on LA from USC/UCLA: • Portrait of LA County – full report: http://measureofam HYPERLINK "http://measureofamerica.org/los-angeles-county/"e HYPERLINK "http://measureofamerica.org/los-angeles-county/"rica.org/los-a HYPERLINK "http://measureofamerica.org/los-angeles-county/"n HYPERLINK "http://measureofamerica.org/los-angeles-county/"geles-county/ • http://www.lewis.ucla.edu/data/ • https://www.lewis.ucla.edu/southern-california-data-resources/ • https://innovation.luskin.ucla.edu/ (look through “Research” and “Publications”) • https://priceschool.usc.edu/research/ • https://www.capolicylab.org/publications/ • Criminalization/militarization: Million Dollar Hoods: • https://milliondollarhoods.pre.ss.ucla.edu/?page_id=1382 • Segregation/environmental racism: • https://www.cmu.edu/steinbrenner/EPA%20Factsheets/ej-health-climate-change.pdf (there are additional links to data within this overview report) • EPA mapping tool: https://ejscreen.epa.gov/mapper/ • SSRC data https://www.ssrc.org/publications/view/highway-to-health/ • Homelessness: • https://www.lahsa.org/ • https://www.capolicylab.org/employment-among-la-county-residents-experiencing-homelessness/ • https://www.capolicylab.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Predicting_and_Preventing_Homelessness_in_Los_Angeles.pdf Step II: Develop a sociological analysis of the data using COURSE READINGS • Then develop a sociological analysis of the empirical data on your topic using key concepts and learning from the assigned readings. Try to answer a couple of the following questions: • Explain the author’s perspective on the concept and what’s sociologically important about it (for ex: if you picked Logan and Molotch, you would thoroughly explain the concept of a growth machine AND explain why this concept is important – what does it help us understand about how space is produced and experienced?) • How do the authors’ insights on this issue help us understand what we see happening here in LA? • What mechanisms in our current society sustain the issue you are analyzing? (Our economy? What about it? Our laws? Which ones?) • What does the issue help us better understand about the broader society? STEP III: Create your concept illustration • Develop a stand-alone “concept illustration” of something important you learned through your research and analysis in our class. This can be a photo, drawing, sketch, anything – see the Instagram account @streetsociology for examples. This will be graded for insight not artistic talent! Citations and Bibliography: Please use parenthetical citations in the body of your paper when you cite empirical data or key concepts from assigned readings, for example (Logan and Stults, 2011, p.16). Do NOT put any web links in these parenthetical citations – a web link is NOT a citation. Use the general format (Author’s Last Name or Agency’s name, date of publication, page number). Provide a Bibliography at the end of your paper to indicate all sources used. Again, no web links here – type out Author, date, Title, Publisher. Grading rubric for final project: 20 points total • Has the student included scientific data from sources listed above? Does student understand what data shows? 5 points • Has the student explained a major urban process we have studied drawing on key assigned readings? Is their understanding of this reading accurate and insightful? 5 points • Is there an insightful sociological analysis of topic’s economic and political dimensions? 5 points • Does the concept illustration communicate learning from the course? 5 points

I do remember the swing of your step The life of the party, you're showing off again And I roll my eyes and then You pull me in I'm not much for dancing But for you I did
