Another 2022-present portable computer thing. This is a 1991 Corvallis Microtechnologies PC5-L. It's a ruggedized, waterproof handheld MS-DOS computer meant for industrial applications. It ran on Ni-Cd batteries and they died so now it runs on AA's I got two of them for $50 on eBay during one of those months when i impulse buy obscure electronics as a form of escapism This thing is an absolute brick. You could murder someone by hitting them on the head with this, and it would work fine afterwards. Here's pictures of its organs for anyone curious:
That thick red wire around the screen PCB is a heater. Yep there's a setting to heat up the LCD so it doesn't get sluggish or shatter when you decide to leave it in the freezer. The thing runs on a little system-on-chip thing, which is interesting to see coming from the early 90's. Iirc the datasheet says it's capable of analog video out as well as driving the LCD, but I haven't poked around enough to enable it. Might be cool to hook it up to a TV. I did, however, open those 512k storage modules and I saw some unpopulated footprints on the boards. So I ordered some of the same chips, and at some point I'mma try soldering them on and see if it recognizes the extra space. They came with two voltmeter modules, which I couldn't get to work, so I took one of the casings and made it into a USB and WiFi adapter using an ESP32 running Zimodem, since this thing has RS232 ports on the top. I also made my own charging adapter, since they didn't come with one. I see that internal PCMCIA slot, and I tried putting a CF card adapter in, and tried installing the drivers, but it didn't work. I'm not good at DOS tbh, and I know nothing of what this slot is for. I might come back to it later. I did all of this in 2022-23 and haven't messed with it since. I have an NCR Tower "16/32" I don't know the exact model/hardware config, and I haven't had any luck finding a service manual for it online. Do you know of any places I could look/people I could ask for help on finding service info? I don't have a terminal for it either, tho I believe I could just hook it up to a usb to db-9 rs232 adapter. (Dunno if it needs a null modem cable or not lol) It's a beautiful machine, (32 MB ram, NCR's in house sysv unix, a 68000 CPU, it's just such a cute little mainframe!)

I assume you can do okay with an ol' RS232 terminal, especially if it has a DE-9 already. As for null modem, that's also worth trying any time you deal with an unknown serial device. A light box helps too.
I'd post about it on some place like the VCFed forums, #vc on SlashNET via IRC might be good, and the ClassicCMP mailing list, see if anyone has more resources for you.

Hi Foone,
I recently came into possession of a PERCON Falcon 320 handheld DOS terminal/barcode reader thing from 1998. It seems to complain about being unable to connect to a server, as well as some kind of firmware corruption, every time I reset it, and it seems it uses a nonstandard (with added power pins) 10-pin ethernet-shaped RS232 connector for interfacing. The configuration software seems to have downloads hosted only on very sketchy shareware sites (it doesn’t strike me as likely that Datalogic’s current software supports it, since the product isn’t listed on their website, only the newer Falcon X3). I can’t find any of the required cable on eBay, so it’s likely I’ll have to open it up and solder/otherwise jury rig some direct connection to something my computer can connect to via an RS232-usb adapter or something. Do you or anyone you know have experience flashing ROM/directly serially interfacing with stuff like this? The advanced user guide I can find by googling doesn’t give an exact spec on serial comms, just how to use the default config software and a pinout for the serial port, as well as how to use the DOS XFER command.
Sorry, not really. I usually have to find manuals or those rare adapter cables to get this stuff to work.
