Ivy Barkakati - Mango Sheen

Mango Sheen is an ambient dream on 6” transparent vinyl! Barcelona’s Modern Obscure Music bucks the Record Store Day trend by releasing a limited edition that you actually need. It’s a sad state of affairs that RSD itself became a bloated major label cashcow, motivated by money not music. The majors focus on unnecessary and gimmicky reissues of records by Pop and Rock dinosaurs (both dead and alive). Originally, RSD was a celebration of independent record shops, whose lifeblood is independent vinyl imprints. Without record labels such as MOM that release forward thinking and boundary pushing music, vinyl and record shop culture would not exist today.

Mango Sheen is one to add to the collection. It was created US born and Barcelona based Ivy Barkakati. A DJ of repute and a rising producer, Barkakati has previously released music on Hospital Productions and Anòmia. Mango Sheen itself first saw light on the 2016 Ritual Rhythms CD compilation on Modern Obscure Music. It was inspired by a trip to Vietnam, the homeland of Ivy’s mother. Mango Sheen is a beautiful slice of beatless levitating hypnotism. The smooth synths move gracefully and rise and fall like calming sea waves. All in all, an absolute beauty.
