Ruairi met Margaret Rourke during his first year at Trinity College in Dublin - they became fast friends as they shared several courses together and had several mutual friends between them. Ruairi was smitten with her almost immediately and though it took Maggie slightly longer to settle into her own feelings they began dating shortly after their first year drew to a close. Theirs was a sweet, comfortable relationship and Ruairi was deliriously happy to be with her; even when she came to him to tell him she was pregnant he was elated, even if that elation was coupled with a healthy dose of nerves. After their son was born Ruairi was convinced that their relationship was cemented and when he followed her home to Illinois he began planning to propose. All of that crumbled in an instant when Maggie walked out on them and Ruairi hasn’t seen her for more than a few minutes at a time in several years in spite of the fact that her parents are still a part of his life through their son. He isn’t certain whether he can ever forgive her for walking out on them but he wants to get comfortable enough to co-parent their son in a way that’s healthy and comfortable for both of them. as of now he thinks that has to be wishful thinking.
