Divers encounter enormous ‘doomsday fish’ riddled with shark bites
15 July 2023
Divers off Taiwan were mesmerized after encountering a giant oarfish — which is rumored to be a sign of impending earthquakes — that had mysterious holes in its body, as seen in a video making waves on Instagram.
In the enchanting footage, taken off the coast of Ruifang, divers can be seen encircling the shimmery silver critter as it hovers near the surface.
At one point, one of the divers reaches out and touches the alleged doomsaying denizen of the deep.
Divers Film Elusive “Doomsday Fish,” Thought to Be a Warning of Impending Disaster
By Eva Hagan
20 July 2023
According to Japanese folklore, the elusive fish is thought to signify an impending disaster, historically spotted right before natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.
The "Doomsday Fish Theory" is connected to the Japanese myth that the oarfish is the "Messenger from the Sea God's Palace" and appears in shallow waters before a seismic or doomsday occurrence.
Hence, the oarfish is often called the "Doomsday Fish," per National Geographic.
The oarfish's "bad omen" reputation has been slightly reinforced over the years.
In 2017, six oarfish were seen just a few days before an earthquake in the Philippines killed six people, per ABC7.
Many scientists and divers are not convinced of any connection between earthquakes and the fish.
Diving instructor Wang Cheng-ru, who captured the oarfish footage, believes the oarfish was dying and floating to the surface.
He told Newsweek that he has been diving for 15 years, and this was the first time he had seen one.
Among the other skeptics is Hiroyuki Motomura, a professor of ichthyology at Kagoshima University.
Motomura told New York Post:
“There is no scientific evidence of a connection, so I don’t think people need to worry.
I believe these fish tend to rise to the surface when their physical condition is poor, rising on water currents, which is why they are so often dead when they are found.”

Taiwannabe With You!!!
Had a quick visit to Taiwan recently. My wife and I wanted to give the family a short respite, something we haven’t done together for a long time. The last time we had a fam-time abroad was in 2013, when we had a quickie vacation in Vietnam. (Pls read: Vacationing in Vietnam.) This time, I wanted them to experience a different, yet equally beautiful and proud culture, that of Taiwan. Our…

I biked out to Waziwei 挖子尾 today cause the weather was nice and I hadn't been in a while. Normally I consider myself a conscientious cyclist and silently judge violators of the rules, but of course the one time I decide to make a foolhardy maneuver based on the fact that the only people visible in either direction are two aunties pedaling at the speed of molasses, precisely then must a guy dressed in all black like a ninja on a racing bike materialise from around a shrubbery at extreme velocity. While I yelped "fuck!", in remorseful anticipation of my self-wrought and untimely demise, he evaded smoothly and silently, but it still generated much more adrenaline than I'd desired in an afternoon.
Bali 八里 is significantly more chill in winter than the summer, I discovered. The crowd was much reduced, along with the 4-person pedal cars usually clogging the bike path (whose ongoing renovations finally seem to be mostly complete and blissfully smooth, further enhancing the experience). I got some fresh donuts from a stand and went to the beach, stomped about barefoot in the squishy low-tide sand, and explored an area I'd never been to over near the bridge construction (the 橋樑封閉禁止進入 photo).
I wish I could say going back was a fun time too but I've come to hate headwinds with a fiery passion. True, that could have been avoided if I'd just taken the bus home, or perhaps the ferry to Danshui 淡水 and then the train, but part of my scheme had been to try and work on extending my biking endurance to facilitate a different scheme to bike to Sandiaojiao 三貂角 and back using a Youbike from Ruifang Station 瑞芳站. I've entertained the conclusion that either I am perhaps not fit for a career in distance cycling (admire though I do those who are), or it's a harebrained idea to do it on a Youbike. (Yes, I know there were some foreigners who went the length of Taiwan on Youbikes, good for them, they also did the west coast.) But it could well be that I was simply cranky on account of being hungry, dehydrated, and not stopping to remedy these things because I was annoyed by the wind. The only way to find out is to keep at it, I suppose.

This is the incredible moment divers captured an extremely rare moment with a giant fish which is believed to predict earthquakes off the coast of Taiwan.
The giant oarfish with shimmering silver scales was spotted floating eerily upright near Ruifang District in Taipei.
It appeared to have several holes in its body which were believed to be bites inflicted while escaping from a shark attack.
