25 November 1917 - Letter to Mother from Witley Camp, Surrey, England
Fred covers recent news in this letter home, including hopes for a meeting with his brother Arthur. He met with friends in London - the Kinnaird-Roses and a Mrs. Allan. He also had news that his cousin Herb had been badly wounded, which he had learned from his friend Edge Elliot while visiting Runfold, England. Herb had corresponded with Fred about a year and a half previous, and Fred had reported in a letter only two weeks earlier that he had heard that Herb had arrived safely on the front lines. (**Stay tuned for more on Herb in the coming month**)
Fred provides news on old friends injured in "scraps up around Ypres" (Passchendaele). He notes that Jack Williams had a skull fracture, and Perc Warren and Hiram Walker were in England as "gas patients". Fred reflects on how lucky he had been to be training in England at the time - the main Canadian battles occurred between mid-October and mid-November 1917.
Fred jokes around about his brother Frank being back home, asking if he had tried to "fly with the Ford" - referring to the family's first vehicle. He reports on his recent studies, including signalling with a former 26th battery colleague. He ends with some responses to previous family letters, commenting on his brother Ernest being away at school and the poor weather at home, signing off with "Love to everybody at home and at Jennie's" (his sister, the eldest child).

Perfect Pitstop: Manor Farm Tea Room
Every respecting cycling should have coffee and cake high up on their agenda when it comes to pitstops during a long day in the saddle. So I have decided to create a new series in this blog called “Perfect Pitstop”. Simply search for the hashtag #PerfectPitstop to find all the reviews of places I have stopped on my bike to find out about hidden gems and places to grab a great coffee and cake.
I cycle past a particular this particular point on the Seale road almost daily as it forms part of the various training loops that I do, and it is also positioned about halfway along my commute from Farnham to Guildford, and whilst I have noticed it, I have never stopped in because the loop doesn’t really justify it (50-60k) and neither does my commute (20k).
However, the other day I took my car in for a service in Farnham and hopped on the Langster so I could toodle up there and check it out for myself. I wasn’t disappointed.
The Manor Farm Tea Room is situated in Seale, bang in between Runfold and Puttenham on Seale Lane, parallel to the Hogs Back, and comes just as you hit the kink in the road as Seale Lane becomes Elstead Road.
Tumblr media
You approach the tea room by way of a small lane off the Elstead Road, and there’s plenty of courtyard parking for cars and obviously bikes. The room itself is a converted stone works building by the looks of it and I was surprised how spacious it was inside, with covers for at least 30 people (at a guess). There are also benches and tables and chairs outside, which is where I chose to sit on this glorious day.
It’s a lovely setting. Quiet, a bit of a suntrap and a haven of tranquillity given that the hogs back is probably less than 1/2 mile away.
For cyclists, there’s another particular interesting (and dangerous) element to this location and that is that Wyndy Milla, the renowned local custom bike maker, is neighbours with the tea room. For the weak, this could be a VERY expensive coffee stop.
Anyhow, I avoided glancing in the direction of WyndyMilla, parked up my Langster and went inside to order my very indulgent pitstop.
Tumblr media
I was greeted by Andy and asked for a coffee and a slice of the Blueberry and Lemon cake. The coffee isn’t any of your yu[[ie coffee affair. It’s simple and straight to the point. Served in a cafetiere it’s coffee as it should be. Andy was gracious though to recognise the latteish desires in my request and provided a companion of hot milk to go with my coffee. Perfect!
However, where the tea room came into its own was with the cake. It was a taste combination I hadn’t tried before and what had I been missing out on for all these years. It was delicious!
Tumblr media
I should also note that whilst I am not a tea drinker per se, the tea room lives up to its name with a wide selection of teas for every discerning palate.
This really is the perfect spot to stop. Whether you are a group of cyclists looking for a pitstop, a lone rider looking for some sustenance, or just someone who wants to find a small, quiet spot to sit and be, with delicious cake and simple straight-up coffee or tea, then the tea room should really be part of your itinerary.
Just make sure you are not in the market for a new bike, or then again....N+1...
