Fall Line Trail
Tumblr media
Before this this week, I hadn't really paid any attention to the specifics of the Fall Line Trail. I know it's a proposed multi-use trail from Ashland to Petersburg at least somewhat akin to the Capital Trail & that's really all I need. Let's do it.
There's a survey going around (HERE) asking about specific likes & dislikes though, so it seems like a good time to get up to speed.
WHERE IS FALL LINE GOING TO BE?
The 43.6 mile Fall Line trail will run through Ashland, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg.
THIS MAP shows a zoomable detailed route of the Fall Line Trail.

WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO RIDE THIS?
There doesn't seem to be a prospective timeline laid out anywhere.
VDOT has a "begin date" of 2023 which gets references as "First Phase". They also say 2023 will see "Identification of Future Funding, Implementation, and Construction".

WHAT WILL THE TRAIL LOOK LIKE?
VDOT has 2 documents HERE (bottom) listed as Fall Line Trail Mapping Sheets  and Fall Line Trail Typical Sections. These show how the trail could be implemented along the route of the trail.
As an example - the trail is specced to follow Richmond Highway. Right now Richmond Highway is not a great place to ride a bike. The design doc shows use of "Typical Sections" S, Q, and J on this sample section of the map - all of which are variations of an 8-10 foot shared path separated from traffic by a multi-foot buffer. A fair amount of the trail will follow existing roadways like this. Other sections will tie into existing paths/trails or follow abandoned railways and utility transmission corridors.
