FFXIV Write Entry #23: No Risk, No Reward
Prompt: suit || Master Post || On AO3
A/N: YOU'RE WELCOME.
--
Gaia sat at one of the tables at the top of the Cabinet of Curiosity, in the middle of transcribing one of the older books in the collection for better legibility for the new printers in both the Crystarium and Eulmore. She wore her hair up today, the long strands pulled and twisted into a bun high on her head and held in place by what looked suspiciously like a sheathed stiletto. In the late morning light streaming into the Cabinet, Gaia’s black hair glinted with dark blue highlights.
Not for the first time, Ryne thought her friend was the prettiest girl in all of Norvrandt.
The Oracle of Light tread quietly forward, as Thancred had taught her, but not too quietly, lest she startle Gaia. Her friend didn’t look up as she approached the table, but she did pat the wood in front of the chair just kitty-corner to her, and Ryne dropped into it without hesitation.
“Hello, Gaia!” she chirped.
“Hello, Ryne,” her friend said, mouth curving in a smile even as her eyes still flicked across the page and her hand scrawled the transcription on another. “Give me a few more minutes, the end of the next page is a good stopping point.”
“Of course.”
Ryne sat patiently, valiantly resisting the urge to fidget with both impatience and nerves. She focused instead on the sound of Gaia’s pen scratching against the paper, of the nib when she dipped it into her bottle of ink and gently knocked the excess from the steel. She could almost fall into a trance from it.
Gaia finally reached the end of her page, carefully writing out the final word in her tidy penmanship before closing the book, setting aside her transcription pages, and cleaning her pen. With no chance of a mess, she turned to give Ryne her full attention and one of her sweet smiles. “What can I do for you today?”
A bolt of pure panic ran through her and Ryne took a deep breath; Gaia’s eyebrows shot up, but Ryne ignored her expression for now.
What was it that Rereha had said to her? No risk, no reward?
I am Ryne Waters, she thought, and I can do this!
She had been balancing a wrapped package on her lap as she waited for Gaia to finish, and now she placed it on the table and slid it towards her friend. “This is for you!”
Gaia’s blue eyes lit up with curiosity and she reached out to accepted. “Ooooh, a present, thank you!” she said. “What’s the occasion?”
“No occasion!” Ryne said, a smidge too quickly.
Gaia’s eyebrow quirked again, but she didn’t call Ryne out on it. Instead, she turned her attention to the package. It was wrapped simply in a piece of black silk, tied with a wide blue velvet ribbon. Her friend undid the bow, carefully unraveling the ribbon and winding it up to set aside, then turning her attention to the silk to unfold it; Ryne had no doubt Gaia would find good use for ribbon and silk both.
She was practically vibrating as Gaia revealed her present, and burst into a wide smile as her friend gasped with delight.
The jacket was leather, dyed a deep, true onyx, and Gaia picked it up, holding it up to the light to better examine it. The cut was similar to the one Synnove had been wearing on her last few visits, which Gaia had admired, lined with a wool so soft and fine it felt more like silk. But what was clearly drawing Gaia’s attention was the embroidery.
Full, lush roses picked out in blue threads—with a few roses picked out in violet instead for accents—sprayed across the shoulders of the jacket and tumbled down the right arm to encircle the cuff. More roses decorated the lapels, one bloom with pink and blue petals sat over the heart, and a full bouquet of the blue and purple sat on the left hip. Petals were scattered about the leather, blue and purple and even a few pink.
Gaia squealed. “Oh, this is so beautiful!” she said, immediately undoing the zipped and twisting around to slide the jacket on. “Thank you, Ryne!”
Ryne beamed. “I’m so glad you like it!”
Gaia suddenly turned her gaze on her, eyes shrewd, and flicked down to look at her fingers. One was bandaged. At various points over the past month, each one had been bandaged. “Did you make it yourself?” she said.
She could feel a blush crawling up her cheeks and she nodded frantically. “I did!” Her voice was only a little bit of a squeak and her heart was pounding her chest, thump-thump-thump, so loud she was surprised her friend couldn’t hear it.
“Then that makes it even better,” Gaia said with satisfaction, zipping her new jacket closed.
No risk, no reward!
“The Wandering Stairs is having a special for luncheon today,” Ryne said quickly. “Fresh shrimp and scallops in a creamy wine sauce, with flat noodles. Would you like to join me?”
Gaia stared at her for a long moment, face unreadable, and Ryne did not shake in her boots, she absolutely did not. But then Gaia smiled, that slow, lovely, true smile she rarely let others see. Just Ryne.
“Ryne Waters,” Gaia said, impossibly fond. “Are you asking me on a date?”
“…Yes?”
“With confidence, Ryne.”
“Yes!”
“I accept,” Gaia said, and leaned forward to kiss her cheek.
Ryne smiled, wide and silly and relieved all at once. “Oh, good!” She was not washing her face for a week.
The pair stood, and linked their arms, Ryne practically bouncing with excitement as they headed for the stairs that would take them down to the main floor and then the aetheryte. Gaia was still smiling, fond and indulgent, and as they both skipped down the stairs, she said casually, “So, who wins the betting pool?”
“Um, I believe it’s Dulia-Chai? Possibly Heron, I’d need to check.”
“Fantastic, either is fine. Rereha and Giott were getting smug.”
“They were losing all subtly, weren't they…”
