Dead End Paranormal Park Season 2, Episode 3 “The Trials of Barney” thumbnail pass of the wrestling match. (Basically the second half of the episode) #spoilers but only if you look too close.
So fast forward like 6+ years since I last posted on my Tumblr, I’ve moved on from art department and illustration into story departments. I work as a Story Artist, mostly on animated series. In the back of my mind I always knew I wanted to do storyboards but it took such a long time for anyone to give me that chance (and a long time for me to be good enough.) Working on Dead End Paranormal Park was so special and this episode was probably my personal favourite to work on. I remember reading something Hamish Steele wrote about the Demon Wrestling in the DeadEndia graphic novels being a love letter to Pro Wrestling and so I wanted this to be an extension of that love letter. I researched the heck out of Pro Wrestling leading up to being briefed on this episode, watching every YouTube clip and documentary I could find and fit into my schedule. I went from someone who knew very little (I’d say Glow was as much as I knew) to someone who actually yelled at my board partner “OMG The Undertaker retired!!” Anyway, I like to think that wrestling with Demon magic is kind of that extra little kick you could only get away with in animation so it was a real ride being able to sink my teeth into that fantasy. I use this post-it method when I have to do a lot of visual writing, which happens whenever I’m working on heavy action sequences like fights that are also story-heavy. Sometimes in order to get a scene working we have to shuffle sections of the script around, add and really plus things. The biggest change was making Hox a constant commentator to tie the whole sequence together (so we gave him A LOT more lines.) Some of the flashbacks originally were at the start of the script and we felt the story was stronger if we saw them during the fight so we moved them here. It was a bit of a choreography of all the parts that had to happen. I still think it was an astounding script to work with and it really helped that to me it was clear from the start what plot A (Barney’s Wrestling) B (Pugsley trying to protect Barney) and C (Norma and Courtney being DWF fans) were. And I absolutely love how all 3 come together in the end. Anyway, this post-it method was something I just started doing after being inspired by this Better Call Saul beat boards I saw on Twitter. https://twitter.com/TomSchnauz/status/1233512024350609409?s=20&t=HFN2Z93g3KgEYUqPOuoAOQ This is the absolute raw first version storyboards of this half of the ep. After that, I developed it into a first pass which we pitched internally. After that, me, my storyboard partner, Eva Figueroa and our episode’s storyboard supervisor, (storyboard lead) Max Loubaresse had a look at the entire episode and refined it some more.

A Delaware District Judge recently gave the green light to a plan allowing FTX, the bankrupt crypto exchange, to sell off billions in digital assets under specific guidelines, aimed at returning funds to creditors. Delaware District Judge John Dorsey approved a plan on Sep. 13 to allow FTX, one of the widely known bankrupt crypto exchanges, to liquidate billions of dollars in digital assets. The approval comes after debtors submitted a proposal in August, outlining the sale of the exchange’s cryptocurrency holdings. This move aims to address the complicated financial landscape FTX is navigating, all while attempting to return funds to the creditors. This is Alamedas Solana wallet which has the rights to the 26,740,743 staked $SOL from 2025-2028.This wallets keys will be sold in the FTX liquidation. Not the $SOL which cannot be unlocked until 2025-2028.As Ive been posting for weeks – FTX/Alameda only hold 7m $SOL and… pic.twitter.com/WeIkCKf2Ek— MartyParty (@martypartymusic) September 13, 2023 The approved plan places certain restrictions on the sale process to ensure a methodical and structured approach. The estate’s sale activities will be overseen by a financial advisor, with a weekly sales limit set at $100 million for the majority of tokens. This ceiling can be increased to $200 million, although adjustments will be evaluated on an individual token basis. Prior to selling high-profile digital currencies such as Bitcoin(BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), the estate is obligated to provide a 10-day advance notice to the US Trustee’s office. In a strategic move, FTX has expressed its intent to hedge Bitcoin and Ethereum(ETH) to minimize the impact of market volatility on the proceeds generated from the sales. Furthermore, the estate has reserved the right to stake particular tokens—essentially participating in token-based activities that could generate additional income. This is seen as a way to potentially enhance the returns that could be distributed to the creditors. @DWFLabs is considering to purchase FTX assets in order to provide creditors the best execution price and mitigate a risk of a huge aggressive selling pressure that could send the market back to 2020’s capitalization— Andrei Grachev (@ag_dwf) September 13, 2023 Amidst these developments, tech firm DWF Labs has expressed interest in acquiring FTX’s assets. Andrei Grachev, presumably a representative from DWF Labs, conveyed through a tweet that the firm aims to offer the “best execution price” for the assets. The acquisition would be targeted at mitigating the risk of drastic market fluctuations, potentially triggered by large-scale, aggressive selling. DWF Labs aims to prevent a scenario that could revert the crypto market to its 2020 capitalization levels. Source

Don’t Wanna Fall (sugar daddy!jin x oc)[preview]
Tumblr media
"Hold on," You halt in the middle of buckling the seatbelt. "Then, who's going to keep Snowball for now?"
Seokjin inserts and turns the keys, starting the car and making the engine groan to life.
"Who's Snowball?" He looks at you strangely.
Right, he doesn't know how you've secretly named him already.
"The fellow at the back." You gesture with the nudge of your head to the backseat.
Seokjin blinks, as if trying to digest what you had just told him.
"It’s name is not Snowball." He insists sternly, sending you a look of disgust before stepping on the pedal and beginning to drive.
"Do not assume its name, princess."
The way the pet name rolls off his tongue made you hold back a tiny gasp, and you shift in your seat, trying to regain composure.
"You're really calling some stranger princess with barely thirty minutes of interaction, letting her into your car, and getting her a pet.” You try to drive him into realisation that he shouldn’t particularly do this to everybody.
“And what about it?” He cocks an eyebrow up.
God, you hate his ignorant ass so much you would flip his car if you could.
But sadly, you need him for the time being.
And whether that need is gradually building up, turning into an unsolicited want—that’s for you to figure out in time.

Can you recommend good justice league books (and the worst)
oh this is a hard one for me. most jl stuff i’ve read was like 10 years ago so i don’t remember what was good or not lol but hm let’s see
new frontier, kingdom come, justice - just the stuff that appears in every rec list lol
tower of babel (jla #43-46) and (divided we fall) jla #51-54 - not exactly favorites but TOB is a classic that gets referenced a lot and DWF is kind of a resolution to that
the entire 1997 jla series has some nice (and some not so nice) stuff so if you ever feel like reading the whole thing go for it lol
justice league international - at the time i read it i felt like some of the jokes did Not age well and it’s probably even worse by today’s standards lol but idk i still really enjoy the characters and their dynamics so give it a try if you want something more lighthearted
jla: classified - this series had a rotative creative team, with each story lasting like 4 issues and iirc they’re not connected? so it’s nice if you wanna read something without worrying about continuity.
justice league of america #0 - focused on the trinity iirc right after the infinite crisis
the tornado’s path (jloa #1-4) - follow up to #0 kinda. the league getting back together + new faces. also not a fave but it’s one of the first league stuff i read when i got into comics and it got me interested in reading more, so maybe it’ll have the same effect on you!
for more recent stuff
scott snyder’s and james tynion’s 2018′s justice league run was nice but it is kind of a follow up to dark nights: metal so it could be confusing if you’re not at least aware that that was a thing that happened lol nothing a quick wiki check won’t fix tho
justice league dark vol 1 and vol 2 were also very fun!
edit: oh wait you asked for the worst sdfjk probably identity crisis :/ i hate it with all my heart and i wish i could erase every trace of it from existence.

three books that changed how I viewed the pandemic
1. Infinite Jest David Foster Wallace
Tumblr media
“You’ll never have as much time as you do right now” seemed to be the mantra circulating at the beginning of the infamous Quarantine during Spring of 2020 to boost morale and motivation to get in shape or discover a new hobby. There will never be enough time to read every great book, but I decided to plunge right into reading with Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace’s 1,079 page capolavoro. I did not know what the book was about, but from what I had heard, I knew it could change me in some way. I mistakenly ordered the book from libby, an ebook service through my public library. It was a painful few days of reading because of the sheer complexity of the book. I patiently awaited the paperback I later ordered and revisited IJ with gusto and a highlighter. My first great revelation was that my multilingual vocabulary was an embarrassment to DWF’s eloquence and creativity. I found myself repeatedly looking up words  and tried not to be discourage in adapting to the DFW’s English. I did not want my copy of IJ to end up on my shelf unfinished and unconquered as what happens to many victims of book’s the difficult structure. The so-called “experimental” endnotes are not to be overlooked and play a fundamental role in the precision of the novel. The book, written in a mosaic of stream of conscious prose, narration and dialogue must be read slowly and given time to process.
Some of the major themes of IJ are addiction, competition, familial relationships, depression, which work together to offer an answer for the essential question of what makes us human. DFW’s characters are all looking for something as it becomes clear to the reader which aspects of IJ’s characters they embody. I found the chapters with Kate G particularly striking although seemingly non-essential to the book’s main characters, members of the Incandenza family. (N.B): this post will be written in more detail once I am able to retrieve my copy of IJ from home full of notes, post-its and highlights).
DFW was a visionary and saw things in the 90′s that are still relevant. The passage on video calling is comical and pertinent to the Zoom era. In reality, we don’t want to video chat with people because we have to give them our full attention instead of discretely multitasking and we have to look presentable, which in Wallace’s world resulted in people replacing themselves with models. Wallace also predicted the rise of capitalism with his calendar of sponsored years as a form of advertising. He even could see the rise of the influencer. “The Entertainment” the holy grail of the novel in a sense, exposes the most beautiful girl and viewers are so incapable of looking away that they will die soiled in their couch. Is being the star of “The Entertainment” what influencers are aspiring to be? Over the past year, we are all trying to escape the boredom of staying at home. I absolutely fill my days from beginning to end to try to forget about the loneliness that DFW so poignantly represents in each of his characters. I know myself and I have tendencies towards addiction whether that be to certain habits, clothes, Netflix, even my own thoughts. DFW himself was a self-proclaimed TV addict, or he would have been he said if he owned a television. Especially through reading I have been trying to escape the boredom without trapping myself in something that will be unproductive and unhealthy. This book can be difficult to swallow because you will be confronted with your own addictions, sadness and relationships to loved ones. I will need to read this book again one day to truly understand and appreciate it. For now I am still ruminating and reflecting on my own search for distractions, which is what the book suggests makes us human.
I reached the last page of the book with a sense of accomplishment for myself and both hope and disillusionment towards the world: hope that it is possible to understand and express such complex emotions, but disillusioned that this sadness and overwhelming amount of “distractions” (some good, some bad) still exist.
2. The Decameron Giovanni Boccaccio
Tumblr media
English: As an Italian major I am completely biased in choosing this title as part of my quarantine reading list. It is also the focus of my senior thesis, which I have also received a scholarship from Cornell to complete. My work is titled The Decameron in the Time of Coronavirus and has therefore earned a spot on this list. I began reading the Decameron in its original 600 year old Italian during the outbreak of coronavirus (Spring Semester 2020). The Decameron is a collection of 100 stories framed by the Brigata comprised of seven women and three men who escape the plague-ridden Florence during the Black Death. When I took this course on the Decameron I hadn’t given a lot of thought to the parallels between the Black Plague and the novel Coronavirus. At the time I was concentrated on the theme of the Decameron I had chosen to write my anthology on: adultery. I wrote 40 pages on all kinds of infidelity present in the Decameron and how it connects to social class, religion, gender, and the larger context of the Plague.
The Decameron tells stories of love, wit, generosity, trickery, social class and religion and fate. Superficially it is seen as entertainment created by the Brigata to survive isolation during the Plague, much as we are entertaining ourselves now more than ever with film and literature. However, the Decameron presents a lot of themes under the guise of raunch or humor that can be endlessly analyzed, especially in the light of the current pandemic. If you are not up to the challenge of reading 100 stories, I highly recommend at least reading the author’s introduction for a description of the 14th century plague. It is chilling similar to how many have responded to Coronavirus: widening social gaps, abandonment and selfishness characterize Boccaccio’s eyewitness testimony and are clearly still relevant in a modern outbreak of a pandemic. In another post I will discuss some of my favorite novellas or stories from the Decameron as well as analyze the modern adaptation by the New York Times. 29 writers were asked to contribute stories taking place in the time of Coronavirus. The Decameron represents so much linguistically as Boccaccio was one of the first major authors to pen the Italian vernacular largely unchanged to the modern language and he realized the importance of empathy and storytelling in times of crisis.
3. Blindness José Saramago
Tumblr media
English: I had heard a reference to a book about an epidemic of blindness in an Italian film. Living in a pandemic, I quickly discovered a remarkable work of “plague-literature” a new genre recurring on many reading lists over the past year. Blindness underlines the role of government and bureaucracy in disarming the invisible enemy, an epidemic. The first to fall ill are treated like lepers and essentially thrown into what feels like a prison for the sick. Fear of the unknown seems to blind even those who have not been infected. The wife of a doctor sacrifices her sight in order to remain by her husband’s side. Her compassion serves as an immunity to the mysterious disease. Using blindness as the characteristic symptom highlights the delicate human nature and our need for empathy and each other. There is such a raw, human nakedness that comes with suddenly being unable to see. The epidemic that unfolds made me think about whether I too have fallen ill to this disease; what in this world am I not seeing? Similar to Boccaccio’s description of the Black Plague and the empathy the Brigata develops by their decision to return to Florence, the darkness of the character’s fate is met with the brightness and warmth of compassion. Although it may seem like a grim choice, this book was surprisingly uplifting and is certainly a challenging read with a rich vocabulary.

Brief History of Type
Tumblr media
Printing with moveable type actually started in China and Korea in the 8th century AD and printed type (via wood block printing) began to be distributed. In Japan, a devout empress commissioned one million copies of a prayer for distribution to pilgrims. During this time a print runs took six years to complete.
In the middle of the 15th century a German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg invents moveable metal type and the printing press.
Tumblr media
Print and typography were transformational in many ways. For example, typography helped seal the notion of “text” as a complete work, a stable body of ideas in one form.
Tumblr media
Before the printing press, books were produced by scribes circa the 12th century.
When Gutenberg produced his first typeface, he designed the typeface that was popular at the time. This first type was called “Black letter”.
Tumblr media
Black letter is a descendant of “Caroline minuscule”, a calligraphic script developed in Charlemagne’s empire (800-1100 AD). Blackletter soon got competition from "humanist" typefaces created during the 15th century by Venetian printers. These typefaces looked more like writing found in the humanistic (renaissance) manuscripts of the time. Most printers started using “humanist”-style fonts but Germans were not swayed: they used Blackletter or “Fraktur” until the 20th century.
Tumblr media
In the first decades after the invention of print, type designers drew their inspiration from handwriting or calligraphy. Frenchman Claude Garamond completed the development of transitional typeface with his  typeface. Garamond gives up on trying to imitate handwriting, for him, type becomes its own art. “Garamond” becomes the most popular typeface in Europe.
Transitional typeface “Transitional” type is so-called because of its intermediate position between old style and modern. The distinguishing features of transitional typefaces include vertical stress and slightly higher contrast than old style typefaces, combined with horizontal serifs.
Tumblr media
Master calligrapher John Baskerville (1706–1775) wanted to improve legibility and worked hard to create typefaces with sharpness and contrast unlike anything else at the time.
Tumblr media
Firmin Didot (1764–1836) created what is considered the first Modern typeface. ``Modern’’ typefaces are distinguishable by their sudden-onset vertical stress and strong contrast. Modern serifs and horizontals are very thin, almost hairlines. Although they are very striking, these typefaces are sometimes criticized as cold or harsh, and may not be quite as readable for very extensive text work, such as books.
Tumblr media
The industrial revolution shaped the 19th century - and it also shaped typography. Mass production led to mass consumption, which led to mass communication. Advertising exploded and with it the need for bold in-your-face type, soon typefaces of all widths and heights appeared. Serifs lost their role as finishing details and became independent components.
20th Century In the early 20th century avant-garde artists went a step further in rejecting historical letterforms. Following the Bauhaus credo of radically simplified forms and functionality, Paul Renner designed Futura based on simple geometric shapes. In his quest for simplicity, Renner avoided all decorative non-essential elements.
Tumblr media
Futura has a refined yet cool element, so when Swedish furniture retailer IKEA abandoned Futura in their catalogues for Verdana (a Microsoft-produced online font), it received severe complaints from customers.
Tumblr media
1957 Helvetica is everywhere. Born in neutral Switzerland in 1957, its neutrality soon took the world by storm. Business quickly embraced the clear but honest look and soon it became the font of choice for logos, transport signs, and product packaging. Today, it is virtually impossible in America to spend a day without somehow seeing the font.
Tumblr media
1950’s After the proliferation of typefaces Concrete Poetry became popular. Coined in the 1950’s Concrete poetry or shape poetry is poetry in which the typographical arrangement of words is as important in conveying the intended effect as the conventional elements of the poem, such as meaning of words, rhythm, rhyme and so on.
Tumblr media
It is sometimes referred to as visual poetry, a term that has evolved to have distinct meaning of its own, but which shares the distinction of being poetry in which the visual elements are as important as the text.
Tumblr media
Phototypesetting, 1950s: this machine projects light through a cut-out of a font character, onto a film that is then treated chemically to bear the mark permanently. This system has the advantage of scalability — magnifiers can be used to adjust the size of the type image freely, without having to bring in a new font cutout. Of course, digital vector technology would soon leave this advancement in the dust.
1977 On April 1, 1977, the Guardian newspaper published a seven-page supplement on the island of San Seriffe, a nation celebrating ten years of independence. The country consisted of two main islands, Caissa Superiore (Upper Caisse) and Caissa Inferiore (Lower Caisse). The capital city, located on Upper Caisse, was the city of Bodoni. Other cities included Port Clarendon, Garamondo and Cap Em (printed with full map and description). Of course, the islands were not real, but many readers called the newspaper wanting to book a vacation. The elaborate typography prank was one of the most successful in history and has spawned online travel guides and more. Why was it so successful? It happened right before the PC revolution, when suddenly everybody could become a type expert.
Tumblr media
The reason that even people who do not care one bit about typography know several fonts and some specialist terms, is the personal computer. Specifically, the first Mac. Steve Jobs had attended a calligraphy class in college which left such a great impression on him that he pushed hard to have several typefaces included on the first Mac. At the time, this was a revolutionary concept but it set in motion the proliferation of digital fonts we know today.
Digital typography (mid 1980s – present)
Bitmap (raster) fonts: a data file that contains glyphs in pixel form. Because it is not scalable like a vector, a bitmap font must contain many sets of pre-determined sizes (traditionally just 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 18, 24, 36, 48, and 72pt), each in every permutation of regular, bold, and italic.
Bitmap font formats: PCF, BDF, SNF, DWF, BF, AFM, FON, BMF, PSF, PK

Outline (vector) fonts - sets of mathematically described lines and curves that trace the outline of glyphs. They are infinitely scalable without pixilation.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
The computer era came with the promise of unlimited font choices.
Fonts soon got used in grotesque ways, the worst offender being Comic Sans, a quirky hand-writing font distributed through Microsoft’s operating system. Intended as a script for an animated dog, Comic Sans became popular because it was part of Microsoft Windows’ standard font package.
Tumblr media
Since everybody had a PC, fonts in Windows became pretty much default standards. The rise of Times New Roman, for example, is directly correlated with this phenomenon.
Tumblr media
For a long time, the Internet ran on a few fonts, namely those available on most computers. A few years ago this changed with the introduction of CSS3 and faster broadband speeds. Now, websites can display fonts delivered through the web and the world is better of because of it.
Tumblr media
2007 On September 25, 2007, Vicki Walker put this in an email and pushed send: TO ENSURE YOUR STAFF CLAIM IS PROCESSED AND PAID, PLEASE FOLLOW THE BELOW CHECKLIST. Her company in New Zealand did not like her use of the caps lock button and fired her for sending “confrontational emails”. Walker won damages in court but the episode tells us something about the power of typography. We don’t like to be screamed at in our face and WE DON’T LIKE TO BE SCREAMED AT ON OUR SCREEN. LET THAT BE A LESSON FOR ALL OF US.

What are the most popular fonts of all time? The poster below combines various Top 100 lists and puts Helvetica, Futura and Bodoni in the top three spots.
