Animal of the Day!
Bluebuck (Hippotragus leucophaeus)
(Photo in Public Domain)
Extinction Date- 1800
Habitat- Southern Africa
Size (Weight/Length)- 200 kg; 1.6 m
Diet- Grasses
Cool Facts- By the time the bluebuck was scientifically described, it was already on the decline and the Europeans certainly didn’t help. Bluebucks lived in small herds and spent their lives on the move in search of fresh grasses. These antelope are considered the first large African mammal to go extinct in modern times. Changes in environment, such as a rising sea level, and low genetic diversity already put the bluebuck at risk. Europeans then hunted the antelope to extinction for its meat and as museum specimens. Multiple rock paintings depict Bluebuck throughout Africa and were believed to have supernatural potency by Neolithic peoples. Roan and sable antelopes, their closest relatives, still wander Africa today. Sable antelope are critically endangered due to illegal hunting and conservations are rushing to make sure it doesn’t go the way of the bluebuck.
Rating- 13/10 (Only remembered by four taxidermied individuals.)

Sable antelope - Waterberg.
Sable males are black in color. This is a female, which tends to be reddish/sorrel in coloration. Juveniles also tend to be reddish in color. In savanna antelope that organize in herds, juvenile males may resemble females initially until they are more mature. This delays their eventual ejection from the herd by the dominant male.

“The Royal”
This character was so absurdly fun to design and color. I think this is my favorite reference sheet I've made yet!

Sculpting the eye is always so fun. There’s a general shape most ungulate (hooved animal) eyes fall into, but each species has its own specific form.
Even within individuals, there’s variation. I typically have a shape in mind when sculpting, but I have to let the hide tell me what shape it needs to be. Some deer have larger eyes, some are more narrow. I won’t know until I start sculpting!
If it makes anyone feel more at ease when looking at these close-ups, just know that these are *glass* eyes! All taxidermy uses reproduction glass eyes!

Tobiko
an updated version of my OC
bio: "Even though he was born sickly, he has always dreamed of becoming a martial artist trained by his idol, Tien. He is a sable antelope and his cahracter was inspired by Chirin from Chirin's Bell. I came up with him because I thought the series could have more main characters that are animal-people besides Puar and Oolong. This is just a rough sketch to get the idea out there but there will be more!"

And for my first Zootuber, I present the DAN-TELOPE!
Daniel Avidan, also known as DannySexBang, of Game Grumps and Ninja Sex Party fame, reimagined as a Zootopia citizen.
I’d already decided by this point I would make Arin a lion, so I wanted to make Dan something that contrasted that, but still fit within his personality. Antelope are tall, lanky critters, but still have a sort of spunk to them, so I felt it fit. I chose a Sable Antelope specifically for the colorization.
