One day I’ll actually figure out how to end this shitty fanfic so I can shove it into other people’s faces but for now, here’s another drawing based on my weird unreleased “Maple’s possessed by a demon” story

the ONLY "modern au" for sally face i'm accepting is where they just age like normal so they're all like 47 in 2024.

sal looks like a shorter version of his dad and he's still got long hair. he's on finasteride because he'd rather suppository a baseball in front of a live studio audience than lose his hair. he works at a grocery store part time and he's on social security.

larry has been a mechanic for 15 years. maybe he eventually cut his hair, maybe he's balding but it's still long, who knows. he's the guy that'll change your oil for $20 if you buy the stuff because he's nice.

ash works at a bank, sells art as a side gig, maybe she has a kid or two but she's definitely divorced and never going back. she hates her job but she's got fantastic benefits and she likes her coworkers so she stays anyway, and she prioritizes chilling on the weekends with sal, larry, and the others.

todd became rich off of his job as an engineer and he and neil live very comfortably with like 7 dogs and sal goes over there to get piled in them at least once a week. everyone loves to chill at their place and watch movies.

maple and chug take great care of each other. chug has high blood pressure and maple is diabetic and they still go dancing once a week. they got empty nest syndrome when soda moved out so they have a cat now.

soda has a complex relationship with her name, having trouble with it in her youth, but as an adult she becomes a bassist or something and owns it. her love of music is something she attributes to uncle sal.

maybe travis got the balls to cut off his dad and live his life, and when his dad died he got to piss on his grave. at least one of his sisters probably remains very religious, but they still visit each other frequently and have deliberately tried their hardest understand each other, and he has a much better relationship with them as an adult, especially after their father died, than they did growing up, and as far as they're all concerned, that's a win.

they've been listening to the same albums and making the same jokes for the past 25 years. they've both grown incredibly over the years and have also not changed one bit. the way they see it, they're living their lives to the fullest like this.

smart TVs make todd's skin crawl, larry still listens to tapes, chug is still the undefeated nockfell hotdog eating competition champion, and gizmo will never die through the power of love and believing it really hard.

Basking in the sun. A soothing activity that you loved to do since you were a child. First, finding a secluded place. Far from people and any human noise. Then, relaxing under the warmth of the sunrays. It could be on a bench, on a tree or on the grass, in silence or lulled by the sounds of nature. As long as you could feel the comfort of the sun embracing you and the absence of any human noise, you were okay.

Then you met your friends and your activity took another meaning when they joined you. Sal would lay beside you, his body fully relaxed in a daytime sleepiness. Larry would pull out his sketchbook, some burst of inspiration shining in his calm but passionate eyes. Ashley would knit a little dude or some blanket for Sal and you. Todd would pull out a book and be very quickly engrossed by it while Neil would cuddle him from behind. Mapple and Chug would silently chat while sharing snacks.

Who would have thought that you who was avoiding human noise to seek nature's music just needed the sounds coming from your friends to fully relax ? To feel their presence beside you ? To feel the warmth of their existence embracing you like the sunrays did ?

You liked bathing in the sun. But you adored doing it with your friends. You would sometimes ask if Sal didn't feel too hot under his prostectic and he would drowsily answer that he was fine and that the wind cooled him. You would ask Larry what was his new artwork and he would show you his latest work in progress. You would ask Ashley if she had difficulty knitting and she would chuckle while giving you and Sal another blanket for your now very complete collection. You would ask Todd about his book and he would give you a quick synopsis and either recommend it to you or give you a quick analysis of a character. You would ask Neil if he needed something and he would tell you that he had all he needed while kissing his boyfriend's temple. You would ask Chug about the brand of the snack he was currently eating and he would share it with you. You would ask Maple if she was comfy and she would smile gently at you while nodding.

Even when Travis later joined you —also Sal and you had begged Larry to not punch him and literally coaxed Ashley with art supplies for her to not stab him with her knitting needle—, the atmosphere was still peaceful and soothing despite Larry's murderous glare at first and very threatening sketches of him dying in excruciating pain. You felt like Travis needed that moment too. A heavy weight seemed to lift off his shoulders once the sunrays danced on his sometimes bruised skin.

"Thanks guys for being there," you murmured one day. Even though you were certain nobody heard you, they all listened but said nothing, just looking at you with fondness.

You loved basking in the sun, but you loved basking with your friends even more.

Larry and Sal go out of their way to make readers birthday extra special bc they're just absolute sweethearts like that :') !!
