(1) Giving has the characteristic of relinquishing; its function is to dispel greed for things that can be given away; its manifestation is non-attachment, or the achievement of prosperity and a favorable state of existence; an object that can be relinquished is its proximate cause. (2) Virtue has the characteristic of composing (siilana); co-ordinating (samaadhaana) and establishing (pati.t.thaana) are also mentioned as its characteristic. Its function is to dispel moral depravity, or its function is blameless conduct; its manifestation is moral purity; shame and moral dread are its proximate cause. (3) Renunciation has the characteristic of departing from sense pleasures and existence; its function is to verify their unsatisfactoriness; its manifestation is the withdrawal from them; a sense of spiritual urgency (sa.mvega) is its proximate cause. (4) Wisdom has the characteristic of penetrating the real specific nature (of phenomena), or the characteristic of sure penetration, like the penetration of an arrow shot by a skillful archer; its function is to illuminate the objective field, like a lamp; its manifestation is non-confusion, like a guide in a forest; concentration, or the Four (Noble) Truths, is its proximate cause. (5) Energy has the characteristic of striving; its function is to fortify; its manifestation is indefatigability; an occasion for the arousing of energy, or a sense of spiritual urgency, is its proximate cause. (6) Patience has the characteristic of acceptance; its function is to endure the desirable and undesirable; its manifestation is tolerance or non-opposition; seeing things as they really are is its proximate cause. (7) Truthfulness has the characteristic of non-deceptiveness in speech; its function is to verify in accordance with fact; its manifestation is excellence; honesty is its proximate cause. (8) Determination has the characteristic of determining upon the requisites of enlightenment; its function is to overcome their opposites; its manifestation is unshakeableness in that task; the requisites of enlightenment are its proximate cause. (9) Loving-kindness has the characteristic of promoting the welfare (of living beings); its function is to provide for their welfare, or its function is to remove resentment; its manifestation is kindliness; seeing the agreeable side of beings is its proximate cause. (10) Equanimity has the characteristic of promoting the aspect of neutrality; its function is to see things impartially; its manifestation is the subsiding of attraction and repulsion: reflection upon the fact that all beings inherit the results of their own kamma is its proximate cause.

"The Prescribed Rites." From the Bhasma Jabala Upanishad, "The Exploration of the Mysteries of the Son of the Ash Heap."

Next the Upanishad mentions an important aspect of the study of Vedanta, in addition to cleansing the body and performing rituals, it states a preventive practice called uparati, “keeping the mind at bay”:
In case this kind of Bhasma is not available, any other Bhasma that may be at hand should be used with the prescribed Mantras. This kind of practice shall destroy any kind of sin that may be committed by man.
Then again Bhusunda asked Siva: “What are the daily rites to be performed by a Brahmin, by neglecting which he will commit a sin?
Who is to be then meditated upon? Who is to be remembered? How to meditate? Where to practice this? Please tell me in detail.”
The Lord answered all in a nutshell: “First of all the devotee should get up early in the morning before sunrise, and after finishing the purificatory actions, should take his bath. He should clean the body with the Rudra Suktas (sacred hymns).
Then he should wear a clean cloth. After this, he should meditate on the sun-god and apply Bhasma to all the prescribed parts of the body.”
Uparati “quietening” is discussed in a number of other texts, but this explanation includes the Bhagavad Gita:
“The Shatka Sampathi (six treasures) which is the second of the Saadhana Chatustaya (four-fold qualifications for Knowledge) – sama (control of mind), dama (control of sense organs), uparati (doing of one’s duty), titiksha (forbearance), sharaddha (faith in the words of the Guru and scriptures) and samaadhaana (contentment) can be distributed into Karma Yoga (uparati, titiksha, samaadhaana), Raaja Yoga (sama, dama) and Jnaana Yoga (shraddha).
Even the four cardinal virtues of Western Philosophy – Prudence (think before acting), Courage (face uncertainties calmly), Temperance (have inner self-control) and Justice (be fair to all people) – can be grouped into this. Prudence and Courage would be Karma Yoga. Temperance would be Raaja Yoga. Justice would be Bhakti Yoga.
Gita shows how knowledge of the Self, devotion to God and loving service to God through living beings are the same in the slokas 6.29 to 6.32.
6.29: With the heart concentrated by Yoga, with eye of evenness for all situations, he beholds the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self.
6.30: He who sees Me in all the beings and sees all the beings in Me, he never gets separated from Me, nor do I become separated from him.
6.31: He who being established in unity, worships Me who am dwelling in all beings, whatever his way of life, that Yogi abides in Me.
6.32: He who judges the pleasure and pain of all living beings by the same standards that he applies to himself is considered as the highest Yogi.
It is to be noted how Gita neatly replaces “Self” by “Me (God)” from 6.29 to 6.30. That shows how Jnaana and Bhakti are effectively the same. 6.29 shows how Karma Yoga (eye of evenness for all situations) and Raaja Yoga (heart concentrated) result in Jnaana (beholds the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self). 6.31 shows how Bhakti translates itself into service.
This whole concept is exactly what Swami Vivekananda packed into the cryptic statement “Shiva Jnaane Jiva Seva” – “Serve living beings, knowing that they are God”. This combines Jnaana, Bhakti and Karma Yogas into one sadhana, ‘religious practice.’”
Krishna "the scourge of the wicked" is a form of social justice descended from God to help us cure ourselves of corrupt politicians and reduce their causes and effects on the good people of this world. As the texts referred to above state, the focusing on the well being of others with a very firm, heavy handed social justice program is a sign of the worship of God.
