MANGUEIRA:  Winner of Rio Carnival Parade with celebration of  black, indigenous, and female heroes

The samba school from Mangueira, a favela community known for its cultural pride and talent, won the Rio Sambadrome competition parade for the 20th time with a show that paid tribute to Rio councilwoman Marielle Franco, who was assassinated almost a year ago.

In a year in which many parades celebrated black culture, Mangueira featured a samba song about the unsung Brazilian heroes, many of them indigenous, black or females, such as Franco. Her same-sex widow Mônica Benício paraded along the last section, honoring favela dwellers that rose above their circumstances.

The parade subverted the images of many historical figures, like Brazil discoverer Pedro Álvares Cabral, portrayed as a con man and using a prison uniform. A famous monument in São Paulo honoring the Bandeirantes (Portuguese settlers who led expeditions inside Brazil’s backcountry) was stained red from the blood of the indigenous tribes these settlers encountered.  

Mangueira obtained perfect scores from the judges, and even before the result was announced, its members were already singing its song and celebrating their victory.

Carnival Sunday - Day 1 in the Sambadrome

While you slept, the biggest party on Earth took over Rio de Janeiro with the first day of the main parades in the Sambadrome. The top 12 Samba Schools in Rio compete over 2 days with over 3,000 people in each Samba School parading along the Sambadrome from 9pm to sunrise the next day.

PARAISO DO TUIUTI

Their first time in the Sambadrome for 15 years - this Samba School’s theme is Tropicália - the Brazilian Art Movement in the 60′s. Their parade features the Beatles to Military Dictators to Carmen Miranda.

GRANDE RIO 

One of the newest Special Group Samba Schools in Rio. Their parade is dedicated to the most popular singer in Brazil right now - Ivete Sangalo. Featuring people being eaten by dragons, replicas of buildings in Bahia (NE Brazil) where Ivete is from & of course the lady herself!

IMPERATRIZ

The 8 times winner’s parade is about the Xingu area of Brazil where the lives of indigenous people & 25 different tribes are facing threats from deforestation, a new dam & modernisation. Look out for toucans, Indian Chiefs & an enormous crocodile.

VILA ISABEL

One of the most tradition Samba Schools, Vila Isabel only allows people from their community to parade with theme - you have to be born into it. The theme of their parade is slavery & the history & journey of music in Brazil.

SALGUEIRO

9 times winner from a favela famous for samba, drums & street parties. Their parade takes you through poet Dante’s “Divine Comedy” with Heaven, Hell, Purgatory & the 7 deadly sins.

BEIJA-FLOR 

As the sunrises Beija-Flor are the final Samba School on Day 1 in the Sambadrome. Winner at Rio Carnival 2015 - This year their parade features romance, poetry, heroism & history.

“I was walking down Broadway with my friend from China. Everyone kept waving at me, and saying: ‘Hi John, Hi John.’ And my friend said: ‘Wow. Everyone knows you!’ I said: ‘C’mon. That’s an exaggeration.’ Right then the door to the Imperial Theatre opened up, and it was an actor friend. He gave me the biggest hug. I said: ‘OK, maybe it’s not an exaggeration.’ Everyone does know me. I’ve been dancing for almost seventy years. It didn’t run in my family. My father was a subway motorman. But when I was sixteen I signed up for lessons with a famous Russian ballet dancer. She was a little lady; told me that I danced like a lobster. Not exactly encouraging, but when I came down the stairs after my first lesson, Eartha Kitt was waiting in the lobby. Not that she was waiting for me; it was for someone else. But I saw it as a sign. I thought: ‘I’m on my way.’ A few months later I made my debut dancing to bagpipes at the Scottish Highland Festival. Then after that I got a gig at the Wine and Cheese Festival. And I never stopped. I wasn’t good enough to do it full time. I had to work as a Spanish teacher for thirty-three years. I was competent; my kids did well on the tests. But I wouldn’t say I was beloved. And when your name is Mr. Bate, the kids are going to call you Masturbate. It’s unavoidable. But each day when that 2:42 bell rang after eighth period; I got on a train and headed to my second life. I’ve danced it all. I was a flamenco dancer. I learned Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian. I danced in the Sambadrome during Carnival. I danced with an Appalachian clogging company. I’ve danced in every major theater on Broadway. My specialty was screwing up the choreography. I’ve actually heard audience members say: ‘Oh no, not him again.’ But I always figured out a way to work. I’ve played every kind of character role. I’ve played Von Rothbart, the evil magician. I’ve played Nutcracker. But the role I loved best was Handsome Haldor. He was a total flop. But in his mind,  he was the most magnificent man in the entire kingdom.”

Mid-Week Motorsport Headlines - 6th May 2022

F1

Netflix has confirmed that Drive to Survive will return for another 2 seasons. If they can get it right, and fix the problems with the last season then that is all good, and I have a feeling that they will do just that. At the end of the day, they don’t want to do a bad job, and I am sure that F1 pushed them to make changes following the backlash.

On the eve of the Miami Grand Prix, it is notable that the FIA President attended Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to meet with Roger Penske, who owns the facility, as well as IndyCar. It would be great to see a return to the Speedway, especially if they can get a track layout which will work for F1. However, it would only be a good idea if there aren’t already 3 other American races a year, which is already too many. The IndyCar market around Indy would surely be receptive of an F1 return, despite past events.

IndyCar

The 33rd entry for the Indy 500 has been confirmed, with Stefan Wilson piloting a collaboration between DragonSpeed, Cusick Motorsport and AJ Foyt Racing, who will supply the equipment for the team, as well as probably technical help during the event. It will be interesting to see how this partnership stacks up, and if it has legs to grow in the future.

The possibility of a 34th entry for Top Gun Racing has seemingly fallen through, despite them having a chassis. The issue seemed to come from an engine supplier standpoint, with Honda only willing to give another engine for a ‘special entry’. I am sure they will be back soon; this year seems to have been a tough one for various reasons.

Formula E

Having left the sport at the end of last season, along with Audi, Abt, who ran the Audi operation, will return to the sport as an independent team. They will purchase the Mercedes team when they leave the sport after this year, and will name their engine supplier in due course. Given Mercedes continued strength this season, it is not a bad team to buy for next season, although I am sure a fair amount of the intellectual property will disappear during the handover.

Sao Paulo is the next city to form an agreement with Formula E to host a race in the future. The deal spans 5 years, and could first host a race next year. The race will reportedly not be at the well known circuit at Interlagos, instead being around the Anhembi Sambadrome, where 3 IndyCar races were hosted, which did produce some great racing.

MotoGP

In shocking news, Suzuki has announced it will leave MotoGP at the end of the season after being in the sport since 2015. This is a surprise, as whilst they aren’t winning right now, their performances have been solid, and not the worst on the grid. This suggests that other factors are the cause of the decision, including possibly carbon neutrality. The decision was communicated late to the team itself, with them only knowing on Monday at the test, with the news braking quite soon after. Reportedly Mir could move to Honda alongside Marquez, replacing Pol, which could make an even more fiery combination than they have now. Rins’ future is unclear. Dorna later came out saying that Suzuki could not leave without an agreement, as they have a deal to stay in the sport until 2026. It is possible that Suzuki will buy out the contract, or settle it another way.

Following this news, various teams in the junior series have expressed their interest in replacing them in MotoGP. There is a cap on bikes in MotoGP which is already at the limit of 24, which shows how much interest there is right now in the sport, especially for customer teams. Aprilia has stated they are willing to field a satellite team, which could be where the bikes come from for the new team.

Other News

In unexpected news, Walkinshaw Andretti United in V8 Supercars, has announced it will change to Ford for the next generation cars. Given the team is born out of the Holden Racing Team, this decision is rather bold, and has angered many loyal fans. The decision may have been helped by becoming a factory team for Ford next year, which could help development work. It is unclear the future of Percat, a long time Holden driver, with family connections there. Mostert will likely stay with the team, given he is engrained there, and had 6 years with Ford.
