As he celebrates his 55th birthday, Samboy Lim making progress on road to recovery
Photo from Quinito Henson’s Twitter account PBA legend Samboy Lim has shown progress in his recovery from coma as he celebrated his 55th birthday recently. In an interview with Philippine Star’s Quinito Henson, Lim’s ex-wife, Darlene Marie Berberabe, said that “The Skywalker” was able to visit his original home in Quezon City last Saturday and have his first wheelchair stroll since suffering a heart attack three years ago. “We wanted to take him to the UP Oblation, a promise we told Sam once he gets better,” Berberabe told Henson. “Sam was at UP when we brought Jamie (their daughter) to the campus for her college entrance exam. He already had his heart attack when the good news came out that Jamie passed. I arranged for an ambulance to take him to UP and be on standby just to be sure. But instead of UP, we decided to bring him to our house in Blue Ridge. After a recon of the UP grounds, we realized there would be too many people especially around the Oblation.” Berberabe said that Lim now “responds to conversations” but remains unable to see and speak. “Physical therapy is still passive and he has it thrice a week,” she said. “Occupational therapy is once a week. He is now able to swallow up to 30 times within an hour. He is able to taste sinigang, adobo, kare-kare, ice cream at supervised sessions by the occupational therapist. The splints on his feet and arms have been on break for a month because he developed pressure sores. We will again consult with his PT when we can resume splinting. His vitals remain strong and stable. Hospitalization is just due to checkups, not because of infection or other illnesses.” Henson also posted on Twitter the “first-family approved photo” of Lim since his heart attack. 1st family-approved foto of Samboy since heart attack in 2014 with exwife Lelen & daughter Jamie-Sam's eyes are open but still can't see pic.twitter.com/EP6cuxx4eO — Quinito Henson (@TheDeanQuinito) April 4, 2017 Lim, a member of the PBA’s 40 Greatest Players, collapsed during an exhibition game in 2014. In his honor, the “Samboy Lim Law”, authored by then-congressman and Pampanga coach Yeng Guiao at the Lower House, was passed last year that mandates “all public and private basic education schools operating nationwide to provide their students with basic life support training through the use of psychomotor training in an age-appropriate manner.” http://j.mp/2nIsRtd

Enough time for PH team to prepare for Olympic qualifying events
#PHnews: Enough time for PH team to prepare for Olympic qualifying events
MANILA – Jamie Lim believes the Philippine team still has enough time to prepare for the Olympic qualifying events lined up for early 2021 despite the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic halting physical training for quite some time.
"Five months is great enough," the country’s rising star karateka said on Saturday.
The 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist said, the online training she is getting keeps her in shape for the rest of 2020 amid the pandemic.
"Since March naman na nag-lockdown (Ever since March when the lockdown was imposed), we've been continuing our training. We have Zoom training and training on our own," said Lim, the daughter of Philippine Basketball Association legend Samboy Lim, a former national team player himself.
Lim will be among the 46 athletes from three different sports to enter the national team training bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba next weekend.
Philippine Sports Institute national training director Marc Velasco said Lim and the rest of the national karate team will enter the so-called "Calambubble" on Jan. 17.
The Nationals will spend the next three months training for their Olympic qualifiers.
But for Lim, the job does not stop at the Calambubble.
"We'll also be abroad joining training camps and watching and joining tournaments," she further said.
The overseas training will last for another two months.
The national karate team will join the Olympic qualifiers in Paris in June along with an estimated 100 more, and Lim is expecting a tough grind there.
"Everyone wants to be part of the Olympics, and this is really the last shot," she said.
But Lim vowed, "I'm gonna do everything I can. I'll do my best and hope for the best."
Only three karatekas from each division will qualify for the main tournament in Tokyo. (PNA)

The Spirit of Sonny Jaworski
By Mark Daniel Chan
Today there was a discussion about Lebron on the B&KP Group. One of the key members of the group said: “With LBJ, there is no middle ground. You either hate him or you love him.” The Philippines has its own equivalent: a gentleman by the name of Robert “Sonny” Jaworski.
I was born in 1981 and my first memories of watching basketball were filled with Jaworski moments. I was a die-hard Ginebra fan back in the day because of the “Big J”, as a lot of people referred to him then. In 1986, I remember seeing a PBA game live for the first time and it was a game between Ginebra and Manila Beer. It was an unforgettable experience, especially as a kid, because the crowd went absolutely bananas every time Jaworski touched the ball.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend
Tumblr media
There was always something about Jaworski that captured the imagination of the Pinoy crowd. Maybe it was the way he carried himself—confident almost to the point of arrogance. However, he could actually play and he spent a lot of time backing up his demeanor.
Jaworski was, by many accounts, also a poor sport. He once led a “walk out” against a Formula Shell team that gave them the championship and he had a falling out with his Assistant Coach Rino Salazar in the process, who refused to join the Ginebra team in their protest. He also once pointed to an injured Alan Caidic, the perhaps equally legendary sharpshooter and said: “Ano, patay na ba? (Translation: Is he dead yet?).
In spite of all of this, there was something about the Big J that got people like me to root for him every single game. I am not old enough to remember the Toyota-Crispa rivalry but I hear stories from people who played against him that he was always one of the toughest competitors out there. And while he would use some unconventional techniques (to say the least) to gain a winning edge (he would routinely karate chop a player’s forearm to gain access to the ball), his will to win and his passion for the game made him the perennial crowd darling.
“Never Say Die”
The first aspect of Jaworski’s greatness had to be his ability to keep his team emotionally invested even when down by a large margin. This gave rise to the “Never Say Die” (NSD) ethos that has permeated Ginebra culture and Philippine athletic lore. NSD was a thing that fans counted on. This made them stay for all four quarters, regardless how big the lead of the opposition was.
I have actually long questioned the reason for fans cheering on a Filipino basketball team. In the US, teams represent cities and geographical locations that are a source of pride for “hometown” fans. In the PBA and in Philippine Basketball, the teams are named after corporations. It had to take people like Jaworski to take a brand like Ginebra San Miguel and turn it from a hard beverage to something that essentially communicates: “I will never give up.” This speaks to his greatness as a basketball player and as a personality.
The other aspect of NSD was actually carried out by roster selection. Although no one can really prove it, I am convinced that they used to take all the glamor (heartthrob) players (Alvin Patrimonio, Jojo Lastimosa, Jerry Codinera) and put them in Purefoods (Ginebra, Purefoods and San Miguel Beer are all sister teams, part of the same San Miguel conglomerate). They used to take all the highly skilled players (Samboy Lim, Hector Calma, Alan Caidic, Yves Dignadice) and put them in San Miguel Beer. They used to take all the people who looked like they were out of shape (The Loyzaga Brothers, Rudy Distrito) and put them in Ginebra, giving the fans players they could really relate with. The team composition meant that the odds were always stacked against Ginebra. But against all odds, they somehow won several championships, the most famous one in 1991 under the name of Anejo Rum 65 (they routinely changed the name of the team to showcase different brands of drink).
“A Yeoman Work Attitude”
The other aspect of Jaworski’s greatness may be reflected by the fact that he was essentially a playing coach for almost two decades. He may not have been the best tactician out there (old Ginebra players still tell stories of how their practices were basically pick up games from 0 to 140, with the losers having to go “lusot” under the winning teams legs…yeah it’s a Pinoy thing), but he was certainly an amazing motivator.
Jaworski in the mid 90s was a late 40s going on early 50s legend of the game who had his son on the team and still played from time to time. The most enjoyable thing for me about watching these mid 90s Ginebra teams was that Jaworski alwas put himself in during a crucial situation, such as when someone had to make a long baseball pass from one end of the court to another (like he would put himself in just to make that long pass with his quarterback like arm and it was the most awesome thing on earth). To be honest, probably only 25% of those passes ended up in the hands of their intended receivers but still, the crowed (WE) loved him for trying.
“A True Leader”
Jaworski also showed his leadership by going with the guys he trusted. He rode with Pido Jarencio for many years and he was repaid with a 1997 championship under the banner of Gordon’s Gin (for some reason they never seemed to win a championship when they were carrying the original Ginebra name in the 90s). He rode with Terry Saldana, who in 1997 was a shell of his former great self and Jaworski was rewarded with the game of Terry Saldana’s life in Game 3 of the 1997 Commissioner’s Cup finals when Saldana filled in for an injured Chris King and defended and rebounded like there was no tomorrow to lead the team to a 3-0 series lead. Jaworski kept the same circle of players: Bal David, Noli Locsin, Vince Hizon, Marlou Aquino, Jayvee Gayoso, and that’s what made him legendary. He stuck with them through thick and thin and empowered them to achieve results beyond their limitations.
The Essence of Jaworski
In the end, Jaworski was really a free spirit. He had the right amount of not giving a “F” mixed in with the right amount of compassion and care for his players. He played with a passion that transcended his skill set, even if he was really already one of the best guards Asia has ever produced (in my humble opinion). And while fans are divided about him because of the poor displays of sportsmanship and the many rough encounters with his peers (some who describe to me in person the pain of being on the receiving end of a perfectly legal Jaworski karate chop to the forearm), Jaworski will always be remembered for making fans care passionately about the game.
In the end, Jaworski’s passion was never lukewarm. It was as red as the flaming color of the Ginebra (and other Gin and Rum products that SMC wanted to showcase) shirt that he wore. From my end, I have always thought that he bears an uncanny resemblance to St. Michael, the archangel who is in the actual logo of Ginebra San Miguel, slaying Lucifer with his sword. This is how I remember Sonny Jaworski: slayer of opponents, crowd favorite, often copied but never duplicated, and a person who made me fall in love with the game of basketball all by himself.

#PHnews: Parks, Pringle seen as top contenders for BPC
MANILA – Bobby Ray Parks and Stanley Pringle are being touted as the top contenders for the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) for the recently concluded PBA Philippine Cup as voting began on Tuesday.
Parks, TNT's current spark plug, finished the bubble conference as number one in the statistical points race but Pringle, Ginebra's streaky combo guard, could get a strong case to earn votes after leading the Barangay to their first PBA Philippine Cup title since 2007.
Votes from the media covering the games, the PBA commissioner's office, and the players will be collected until the following Monday as the finalists for the BPC plum looks to sway them in their favor.
The final nominees for the BPC award are Parks, Pringle, the Tropang Giga's Roger Pogoy, Phoenix Fuel Masters’ Matthew Wright and Calvin Abueva, and Terrafirma Dyip's Jaymar Perez.
The BPC will be named in a special awards night on January 17.

Instead of the usual Rookie of the Year plum, an Outstanding Rookie award will be given to one of the following: Ginebra's Arvin Tolentino, Meralco's Aaron Black, Terrafirma's Roosevelt Adams, Alaska's Barkley Eboña, and Magnolia's Aris Dionisio.
An Elite Five award will also be given instead of the classic Mythical Selection.
Parks, Pringle, Pogoy, Wright, and Perez are in the running for the two guard spots in the Elite Five, while Abueva is in the frontcourt list, where three will be chosen.
Also included in the forward/center list are Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar, TNT's John Paul Erram, Alaska's Vic Manuel, Phoenix's Jason Perkins, Magnolia Ian Sangalang, San Miguel's Arwind Santos and Moala Tautuaa, and NorthPort's Christian Standhardinger.
The only Leos staples that will be handed out are the Most Improved Player, where Perkins, Phoenix's Justin Chua, Rain Or Shine's Javee Mocon, NLEX's Raul Soyud, and Meralco's Reynel Hugnatan are the final nominees, and the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award, where Abueva, who showed that he is a different person after serving a lengthy ban in 2019, is a finalist along with Ginebra's Scottie Thompson, NLEX's Kevin Alas, and Rain Or Shine's Gabe Norwood. PBA to set online awards night, draft
#PHnews: PBA to set online awards night, draft
MANILA – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will be holding its major preseason activities online due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.
The league will be doing its awards night and the rookie draft through video conferencing, shying away from a physical version of them due to the quarantine restrictions imposed in Metro Manila.
The "special" awards night will take place on January 17.
Unlike the usual Leo Awards, only the Best Player of the Conference and not the Most Valuable Player of the season will be handed out.
Also to be presented are the Outstanding Rookie and the "Special Team" instead of the Rookie of the Year and the Mythical Selection, respectively.
Three staples in the Leos, the Most Improved Player, All-Defensive Team, and the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award, will be handed out during the special awards night.
Meanwhile, the March 14 draft will take place at the virtual realm instead of holding it physically at the Robinson's Place Manila atrium, regardless of whether Metro Manila will stay under general community quarantine (GCQ) or be finally placed under modified GCQ that month.
However, the possibility of holding a physical combine right before draft day remains, considering the success of the Women's National Basketball League's physical draft combine at Victoria Sports in Quezon City last month. (PNA)

PH rules boxing, Samboy Lim’s daughter wins gold in SEA Games
#PHnews: PH rules boxing, Samboy Lim’s daughter wins gold in SEA Games
MANILA – Filipino boxers punched their way to seven gold medals in the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Monday, highlighted by a sensational first-round stoppage scored by Eumir Felix Marcial over his Vietnamese foe.
World women’s champion Nesthy Petecio bannered the Filipino pugs’ campaign, winning the gold in the 57-kg class (featherweight) with a 5-0 shutout of Nwe Ni Oo of Myanmar at the PICC Forum.
Also winning gold medals were Carlo Paalam (light-flyweight), Rogen Ladon (flyweight), Josie Gabuco (women’s light-flyweight), James Palicte (light-welterweight), Charly Suarez (lightweight), and Marcial (middleweight).
In all, the Filipinos topped seven of 13 events at stake to win the overall title.
Thailand accounted for five golds while the other gold was won by Vietnam.
Marcial, the silver medal winner in the last AIBA World Championships, provided the highlight of the night, winning the 75kg class (middleweight) with a first-round knockout of Vietnamese Manh Cuong Nguyen.
The 24-year-old native of Zamboanga initially staggered Nguyen with a solid left before delivering the coup de grace, a crunching left to the body that had the Vietnamese haplessly going down to the canvas.
Paalam got the Philippine boxing medal machine going with a 5-0 win over Kornelis Kwangu Langu of Indonesia, followed by a similar 5-0 thrashing scored by Ladon on Ammarit Yaodam of Thailand. Palicte also outclassed Van Hai Nguyen of Vietnam 5-0.
Former world champion Gabuco was the other lady gold medal winner for Team Philippines, whipping Endang of Indonesia 5-0.
Three other Filipinos – Irish Magno, Riza Pasuit, and Marion Pianar – settled for silver medals.
Magno lost to Thi Tam Nguyen of Vietnam 1-4, while Pasuit and Pianar lost by similar 5-0 scores against Thais Sudaporn Seesondee and Wuttiochai Masuk, respectively.
Meanwhile, Jamie Christine Lim delivered the second gold for the Philippines at the close of karatedo action at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
Lim, daughter of pro basketball legend Samboy Lim, ruled the +61kg kumite with a 2-1 win over Ceyco Zefanya of Indonesia, her first gold medal in the biennial meet just five months after she rejoined the national team.
The 21-year-old karateka was away from the sport for four years to focus on her studies. Last July, she finished her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree at the University of the Philippines, graduating summa cum laude.
“I worked super hard for this. I stopped for four years to concentrate on academics,” said Lim.
“I fought against the odds because my opponents were full-time athletes. I only trained full time for five months. But I did my work, worked hard every day, no shortcuts. I wanted it so much,” she added.
Lim, who scored wins against Audrey Japyus Malaysia 7-3 in the quarterfinals and Thi Thao Bui of Vietnam 5-1 in the semifinals, offered her triumph to her parents.
“Summa cum laude is for mom, SEA Games gold for dad. I can’t believe that both of them happened this year, 2019 is so perfect for me. I’m just so grateful, I’m grateful,” she said.
“I look up to my mom and dad so much. To even come close to him, as in to be compared to him and to mom, it’s so big for me. Today is just so special for me. I feel happy.”
Lim joined Junna Tsukii as the other gold medalist for the karatedo national team after the latter ruled the -50 kumite women’s division.
The Philippines collected 12 more golds from athletics, kickboxing, squash, windsurfing, jiujitsu, archery, and sailing as the runaway leader in the medal tally improved further its total medal haul to 344 – 136 golds, 102 silvers and 106 bronzes.
The Filipino athletes’ performance in the penultimate date of the 10-day competition also surpassed the country’s performance in the 2005 SEA Games where the Philippines won the overall title with 112 golds, 85 silvers and 95 bronzes.
Thailand scooped an additional 27 golds on Monday that put them in second place with 84 golds, 90 silvers, and 102 bronze medals. Vietnam is now in the third spot with 79-78-93 tally while Indonesia skidded to fourth place with 69-76-102 medals.
Malaysia, overall champion of the SEA Games it hosted in 2017, is running fifth with 51-52-67 followed by Singapore’s 50-43-59.
With only 51 gold medals left at stake on the final day of competition on Tuesday, the Philippines is already assured of its second overall SEA Games title. (PNA)
