NTT Docomo Research: Winter 2018 TV Anime Anticipation Ranking

Following the previous one by Kadokawa group company GzBrain posted last month, the largest Japanese mobile phone operator NTT Docomo also revealed the result of its own popularity ranking for the new TV anime titles that will premiere in this winter 2018 season. The online voting was conducted with the users of the company's anime streaming service dAnime Store between Decemner 25 and 31, 2017. The number of total votes was 47,145 (voting for multiple titles was allowed). See the ranking for this winter's 48 titles below.

There's an evil creature called Aratama that attack people, and a group of Miko has been exorcising those creatures using swords since olden times. Those who wear uniforms and swords are called Toji, who are officially called Tokubetsu Saishi Kitoutai (Special Ritual Maneuver Team) in the police association. They are officially approved of wielding the swords by the government officials. The government has established five training schools consisting of junior and senior high levels for the female students to attend. They spend their student life normally and use special skills with the swords when they're doing missions to protect people. In the spring, these five schools are to take part in a competition. Among the girls who train for the competition, there's a girl who's a bit more passionate than any other girls. Where would the girl with the sword aim?

Although they say it’s an anime original, they released a manga adaptation in October, before it even had a chance to air. Therefore I’m counting the manga as having come first, ok? Have some patience, Genco. This is one of those anime where every character is a cute girl but they say it isn’t moe. I’m pretty sure the main character’s best friend is going to turn evil at some point, or at least have an arc where they’re rivals instead of friends. Eh. Honestly, I’m not that interested in gender-segregated settings, unless it’s a deconstruction. -Ace

A collection of animated horror stories based on the works of Japanese artist Junji Ito. 

Self-explanatory. Ito Junji is a famous horror mangaka; they’re probably animating all of his stories. They aren’t that long, so it might be relatively episodic. It’s horror, and I get scared easily, so I probably won’t watch it. Also I don’t trust Studio Deen. -Ace

Sanrio Danshi

Genre: school

The project's premise follows Kouta Hasegawa, a high school boy that loves the yellow Pom Pom Purin dog. By mere coincidence, he ends up attending the same school as Yuu Mizuno, a boy who likes the bunny My Melody. Yuu tells Kouta that there's nothing to be ashamed of for liking Sanrio's cute characters. Together, Kouta, Yuu, Shunsuke Yoshino, Ryou Nishimiya, and Seiichirou Minamoto learn to accept their love of the characters instead of feeling embarrassed.

This is the latest franchise by the Hello Kitty people. Don’t be fooled, it’s definitely a product tie-in. This anime is connected to a manga and app as well. I don’t trust marketing. I do like the “liking cute things is ok even for boys” message, but seeing as it’s just to advertise...I’m torn. Each dating sim target guy corresponds to a Sanrio character, like Hello Kitty. -Ace
