A defining feature of early, or "classic," British television was its reliance (some might say: dependence) on a steady stream of fresh and at the same experienced talent from its rival and ancestor, live theatre. In 1954, when Patrick McGoohan and Sarah Lawson first appeared together, as newly-weds in Jan de Hartog’s play The Fourposter, television was an extremely young medium; indseed ITV did not exist for another year, and actors if they found themselves employed at all, could expect to be cast in roles that were not necessarily tailored to their age or type.
Much ridiculed, albeit it fondly at times, the standard repertory method had the distinct advantage of teaching newcomers to be prepared for anything and everything - and the lesson had to be learned quickly: in the hectic world of fortnightly, sometimes weekly, cycles, having to rehearse a new part during the day while performing in the current production at night, the ability to concentrate was essential, yet it left no room for character exploration or any kind of in-depth analysis. Which may have been just as well: the post-war fare of murder mysteries and romantic comedies required little emotional empathy but plenty of technique.
The Fourposter is a case in point, as it requires its two characters to age through nearly fifty years of marriage in the space of a two-hour performance. With both husband and wife on stage in each of the play's six scenes, make-up and costume changes would have happened while the curtain was lowered, briefly, to indicate the passage of time. For a production which only received the Q Theatre's customary nine performances, the sheer effort involved seems superhuman, and perhaps that too is, or was, as it should be.
In the history of British theatre, the repertory system occupied a unique position in the middle of the century, shaping and reflecting the tastes of the time, and nurturing the talent that television went on to inherit. It gave way, eventually, to the kitchen sink revolution of 1956 and all that, but while it lasted - and beyond - its influence was ubiquitous. When Patrick McGoohan and Sarah Lawson met again on the set of Danger Man in 1959, they were both seasoned veterans of their trade: consummate professionals who knew their lines and how to deliver them. Unlike the proudly ephemeral medium of the theatre, television has with similar pride, and justification, opted to preserve at least some of its artistic and creative heritage.

Holz, Drahtgitter, Kabelbinder, Kleister, Papier, Spray, Sound, Noppenschaumstoff, LED site-specific
