Atlantic bubble brings hope to Maritime hospitality industry
Tourism is spiking across the Maritimes since the opening of the 'Atlantic bubble' in early July. With many visitors allowed to travel interprovincially, the Maritime hospitality industry says business is getting back on track, and bookings are beginning to fill up again â a sign of hope for the economy after being impacted by COVID-19.
"Since it's opened, we had more calls from locals, from Nova Scotia, P.E.I., even New Brunswick," says Bay Vista Lodge and Cottages manager, Saunya Leblanc, about the fortuitous increase in bookings at her New Brunswick-based business.
Cottages, hotels and Airbnb hosts have noticed a recent uptick in bookings since the Atlantic provinces opened their borders on July 3, with Maritimers exempted from self-isolating.
"It has been very good to us," says N.B. Airbnb host, Jay Tse. "Since the announcement, that day, within the 24-hour span, we had about ten bookings."
Many Maritimers are booking their weekend getaways â with the weekend of July 11 being the first weekend for visitors to have access to a pre-travel registration service to help expedite their trip.
In nearby Prince Edward Island, a new testing site for residents who are essential workers is being set up near the Confederation Bridge in Borden-Carleton.
There is also optimism in Nova Scotia, where the number of visitors to the Halifax Waterfront has been steadily increasing. Tourism operators are hopeful that they will be able to salvage some of the summer season.
"I think people do want to get out, move around, visit around, visit their friends and family," says Segway Nova Scotia owner, Max Rastelli. "Halifax is probably going to be one of those spots where a lot of people are going to come to; there's still a lot to do and see here."
Those who are travelling through the bubble say it's a nice getaway â even if their destination is only a few hours from home.
"It's better than being cooped up on the island for so long," says P.E.I. resident, Jennay Randall, who is visiting Halifax. "Even though there is the caution of COVID-19 and everything, it's nice to have the opportunity to go out and meet new people."
Many say the bubble has offered a glimmer of hope during tough times.
"There's light at the end of the tunnel," says Tse.
However, people in charge of booking guests from out-of-province say, while the extra tourism is appreciated, there is still a financial hit from the lack of Canadian visitors from outside of Atlantic Canada who want to visit.
"Most of our visitors are from Quebec," says Leblanc, who is missing the revenue from her non-Maritimer visitors. "We do have some from Ontario."
Meanwhile, the testing site for essential workers in P.E.I. will open on Monday at noon. Testing will be available daily from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Essential workers will be given direction on how to access the service as soon as they cross the Confederation Bridge and are screened.

Review Menu Keju Terbaru ala McDonaldâs Indonesia, Kamu Sudah Cobain?
Liputanviral - Tahun baru, menu baru. Mungkin itu salah satu prinsip McDonald's Indonesia. Berbeda dengan tahun sebelumnya yang mengangkat tema kuliner Nusantara, kali ini McDonaldâs menghadirkan saus keju spesial. Menu terbarunya diperkenalkan melalui media sosial pada 4 Januari lalu.
1. Ada tiga macam menu paket terbaru McDonaldâs Indonesia
Menu terbaru yang diandalkan McD kali ini adalah saus keju yang dipadukan dengan daging sapi atau ayam. Tidak ada yang baru untuk ayamnya, cukup menggunakan menu sebelumnya, yakni ayam krispi atau ayam pedas. Kamu tidak bisa membeli secara satuan atau ala carte.
Paket ayam saus kejunya dibanderol Rp43,5 ribu. Di dalam satu set menu terdapat ayam krispi dengan saus keju, nasi, scramble egg, dan Fruit Tea 350 ml. Sedangkan, menu dagingnya terlihat lebih menarik karena memadukan beberapa menu terbarunya.
Di dalam satu set menu terdapat prosperity burger, potato wedges ukuran medium, dan pineapple fizz. Ketiga menu tersebut termasuk yang paling baru dari McD, harganya sekitar Rp53,5 ribu. Maka dari itu, liputanviral mencoba langsung paket menu ini.
2. Seenak apa sih, paket prosperity burger terbaru dari McD?
Spesialnya dari prosperity burger adalah adanya embel-embel "daging steak". Bukan sekadar embel-embel sih, dagingnya memang berbeda dari yang biasa digunakan. Teksturnya lebih terasa dengan tingkat ketebalan yang memuaskan.
Senada dengan penulis, pelanggan bernama Stella Azasya mengatakan, "Menurutku ini prosperity burger terenak yang pernah ada di McD."
Perpaduan daging dengan kejunya terasa pas, saunya pun tidak pelit. Berbeda dengan gerai fast food yang sudah ada, saus keju ala Mcd ini lebih kental seperti keju cheddar cair.
"Sudah kucobain satu-satu, kalau cuma makan dagingnya rasanya biasa saja. Tapi kalau dikombinasikan dengan keju, rasanya memang bikin dan enak banget," kata pengunjung lainnya, Rully Bunga (24).
Secara keseluruhan, prosperity burger ini layak untuk kamu coba, terutama bagi penggemar keju. "Bagiku sih paket terbaru ini nilainya tujuh," tutur pengunjung McD, Putriana Cahya (25).
Dua menu terbaru lainnya turut dihadirkan. Di antaranya potato wedges dan pineapple fizz. Untuk pineapple fizz, penulis merasa lebih enak mango fizz yang sudah diluncurkan lebih dulu.
Mango fizz terasa menyegarkan dengan ekstrak mangga yang cukup terasa. Lain halnya dengan pineapple fizz yang rasanya kurang nendang. "Kok, kalau aku rasanya seperti nostalgia masa kecil, ya? Rasanya mirip Finto (minuman sachet yang terasa ada sodanya)," ucap pengunjung McD, Pinka Wima (27).
Nah, terakhir ada menu yang unik dan cukup baru dalam menu fast food. Dalam segi rasa yang sudah familiar dengan asinnya kentang gorengnya, mungkin menu ini terasa kurang "micinnya". Adanya potato wedges membuat McD mempunyai variasi camilan terbaru ke dalam menunya.
Harga untuk ala carte potato wedges dibanderol Rp25 ribu untuk ukuran besar. Sedangkan, pinneaple fizz dibanderol Rp13 ribu.
3. Respons wargetnet begitu positif, bagaimana dengan kamu?
Kurang afdol rasanya kalau review makanan tanpa adanya sudut pandang warganet. Di akun Instagram McDonald's Indonesia, unggahan mengenai menu terbarunya telah disukai lebih dari 7.000 orang dengan berbagai tanggapan.
Banyak di antara warganet yang memberikan respons positif. "Min, yang menu prosperity kejunya enak! Tiap tahun kalau menu prosperity keluar yang keju tetap ada dong, ketagihan. Burger terenak," tulis akun Selviasefani.
Rasa memang tergantung selera masing-masing, seperti yang diungkapkan warganet lainnya, Shurselena_khaistalri. "Not really recommended. Aku coba di salah satu cabang Semarang, sausnya jauh dari kata cair. Jadi seperti selai cokelat kemasan gitu teksturnya. Rasanya pun lebih mirip mayonais dibanding keju. Minusnya McD baru aku temuin di makanan ini doang (versi ayam)," tulisnya.
Beberapa food blogger juga telah mengulas menu terbaru McD, seperti halnya akun Makanber2. "Menurut kita berdua, rasa saus cheese-nya berasa kayak mayonnaise dan bawang gitu. Rasa kejunya tipis banget dan sedikit asin. But for all, ayam sama saus ini cocok buat dikombinasiin, nilainya 3,5/5," tulisnya.

Gomi Chases Sustainability Through Modern Tech

Have you ever looked at your recycling bin and wondered how much of its contents are actually being processed and repurposed? Gomi, a young Brighton, UK-based design studio, noticed how trendy recycled plastic was becoming in the design industry, as well as how well-designed consumer technology was being left in the dust. Major brands have been sticking to a traditional buy-consume-waste model, rather than looking towards the future. We spoke to product and process designer, Tom Meades, about how Gomi took that seed of a thought and set off to try and prove the possibilities of working with recycled waste materials.

Tom told us that Gomiâs work has always been inspired by Japanese minimalist design and pure forms. The word âgomiâ, meaning âwasteâ in the Japanese language, made for a moniker that pays homage to those influences. When paired with the brandâs vibrant colors and fun minimal designs, the name Gomi helps to create a culture that follows suit.
Having worked with recycled materials while completing his degree project at The University of Brighton, Tom was inspired to create a series of products that acted as agents of change, proving the potential of waste materials by turning them into beautiful, desirable pieces. His project garnered some media attention, and after graduation he teamed up with the other three team members: Rishi Gupta, Kyle Brackenfield, and Pawan Saunya to take things to the consumer level.
Gomi started simple, creating a website that would serve as their all-in-one hub. Squarespaceâs website building platform was their first choice due to its affordability and flexibility. âSquarespace really cares about design and usability,â Tom says, sharing that they liked their ability to create a beautiful site with the help of well-designed templates. âSquarespace serves our needs very well, as we are also design-led. They help to convey our love for great design through our website.â
The website, pictured above, incorporates Squarespace ecommerce functionality, which includes everything from robust analytics functions, Google keyword integrations, seamless checkout experience, and mobile apps that notify their team of sales. âSquarespace is a complete system for anyone starting out, and it serves us well.â
Tom has been a fan of the email marketing tools offered by Squarespace. âThere was no email marketing builder that offered beautifully designed, easy to use email â and hallelujah, Squarespace has done an amazing job!â he raved. âIt gives us such great joy due to the ease of use and how clean and professional the end result is.â For a brand like Gomi, email marketing has been crucial to how they interact with fans and customers, and the communications are an essential part in keeping users up-to-date.
âOver the past 9 months, we have diverted around 500kg of ânon-recyclableâ plastic packaging waste from going into landfills. With our new Portable Chargers, we hope to introduce an affordable, fully-circular product built from recycled plastic material and repurposed batteries,â Tom said of Gomiâs core product, pictured above. He says they can increase this amount more than ten times over in the coming year, helping to clean the planet of pollutant waste streams, while also creating fun, everyday products that people love to use.
One of Gomiâs goals is for their customers to keep and enjoy their products for as long as possible. Since each item they manufacture has its own colors and patterns, their hope is that people will see it as something uniquely created for them. And when the time comes to replace the product, they simply return it to Gomi for the materials to be reused yet again.
The portable speaker, Tom says, was inspired by the desire to prove the value that waste could have while making a fun and functional product â one that could sit around the house but be âan object youâre precious about.â They started the process by exploring designs for a high-end loudspeaker.
âWe thought that by making a product that looked great, sounded great, and had a personal story, then people might begin to form a relationship with the product, which would stop them from thinking of plastic waste in the same way in the future,â Tom shared.
Molten non-recyclable waste after itâs been kneaded into a marble-like pattern
Tom says that they stuck to a few basic principles during the design phase of the Portable Charger. It needed to be big enough in battery power to keep a device changed for long periods of time without needing recharging itself, and it needed to be slim enough to fit in your pocket. Each one should feel like an original work of art. And the manufacturing needed to take place in house at their Brighton workspace, benefitting the local economy while lowering their carbon footprint by avoiding long distance outsourcing.
The outer casing of Gomiâs Portable Charger is made from molten non-recyclable plastic waste streams, such as LDPE (low-density polyethylene) and HDPE (high-density polyethylene) packaging, that is then kneaded into a marble-like surface pattern that can be compressed into Gomiâs molds. Each Portable Charger is easy to disassemble back into raw materials after use, making upcycling simple.
Gomiâs larger mission is to redirect global waste streams into iconic design products, beginning with their high-end Bluetooth Loudspeakers. Now theyâre scaling up to create more accessible products at a more affordable price point. In addition to proving the positive potential of redirecting waste, their sustainable consumer technology has helped create relationships between technology and user, taking a fresh perspective on sustainability in the process.
âWe control every stage of the process, from material collections with local businesses to hand finishing, soldering, and fulfillment of our finished products,â Tom says. âThis means that we can work locally and build relationships within the community, address real life waste streams, and adapt and develop our processes to ensure that we are able to convert different types of waste materials.â Gomi also continues working with larger waste recycling companies, many of whom serve as a testing facility for non-recyclable materials to make them into one off objects and prove the value of a material.
Tom says every project at Gomi is led by one clear question: âHow can we turn pollutant waste materials into cherished products that people will love using everyday?â
With their new Portable Chargers available for order through a fully-funded Kickstarter initiative, Gomi is on the move towards future projects. Theyâre currently working with an architecture/interior design company on bespoke furniture pieces designed for specific spaces and made from construction site waste. Tom said they would love to collaborate with another large tech company in the future on something unique that promotes sustainable design.
Looking further towards the future, Gomi hopes to grow their team while keeping their Brighton studio as the heart of the brand. One large goal is to work closely with other cities around the world with devastating amounts of plastic waste that are impacting their communities. Tom explained their vision, âWe see Gomi really helping communities and businesses to come up with creative solutions for their waste. Our love of creating beautiful, useful electronic products out of waste will mean that we will be introducing many more essentials.â
