The practice of whaling has become a high topic of interest in the few last weeks due to recent controversial news that has spread globally. Whaling is the practice of hunting and killing whales and is an activity that has been carried out for centuries. In recent years, whaling has increased in popularity in countries such as Norway, Japan and Iceland, despite whale populations reaching drastically low with a number of species endangered (NOAA, 2013). After a two year suspension, Icelandic whaling company Hvalur have said they will continue their hunt of the endangered fin whales and have set a target to kill 191 for this season. Whales are the largest marine mammals to have ever lived on the planet with the blue whale being the biggest animal to have ever lived (Clauset, 2013). These marine animals play a critical role in our ecosystems, keeping the ocean healthy and regulating food systems within the ocean. As well as regulating other species populations they are sentient beings which are highly social and intelligent. Please help us #StopIcelandWhaling and email/tweet their government to inform them that this whale hunt makes no economic sense, whereby it has been shown the whale watching industry generates $20million USD, exceedingly more than the whale meat market (IFAW, 2018). If you want to speak up for the whales click the link in @cristinamittermeier bio to contact Icelands government directly. @sea_legacy #StopWhaling #SaveCetaceans #TurnTheTide #OneOcean #MarineConservation Post by: @sarwren Video by: @oceanicpreservationsociety
