so I'm thinking of rereading Shoebox Project because now I have it on the Kindle.

My most vivid memory of the first time I read it was when I wept for an entire afternoon when [spoiler redacted].  Oh dear.

my thoughts on the shoebox project because people obviously want to hear them

I love the shoebox project. I think it is a wonderful piece of writing and tells a brilliant story. It's held very close to the hearts of very many people, and rightfully so. If someone asked me what I thought were the essential wolfstar fics (people don't ask me that and I don't know why they would) I would definitely point them in the direction of the shoebox project. It's held in very high esteem because it is, actually, very good. It's heartbreaking and funny and beautiful and all in all a good telling of the marauders story.

HOWEVER

it's not my headcanon. There are flaws, in canon consistency and internal consistency as well. Shoebox!Remus is not my Remus and is not canon Remus, but he is a precious creation all the same. Sirius is closer to how I imagine him (although honestly I think of pre-Azkaban Sirius as an ENTP, and see PoA-onwards Sirius' moodswings as a result of Azkaban trauma, not an essential part of his personality) and Shoebox!James helped form my perception of James almost entirely.

What the shoebox project does very well is create a world and characters that are entertaining and believable. That world just doesn't always jive with the world it takes as its source. Is that enough to make it a perfect wolfstar fic? That depends on what you want out of a wolfstar fic, I suppose. It's not my perfect wolfstar fic, but it was my first, and that counts for something. And whether or not you adopt it as headcanon/religion, it is a really great fanwork that people keep coming back to, and discovering and rediscovering over the years, as people do with any good story.

What I am trying to say is... I don't worship the shoebox project but I think it is awesome! And if you like it, you're probably awesome! And if you don't, there's a good chance you're awesome too!
