Man I will say like. I'd need to dig out my medieval history textbooks and brush up on my knowledge of what the IRL ye olde medieval times were like to write in depth on it, but god damn does FE3H feel buck wild about its understanding of medieval history if you the player are someone who actually knows shit about medieval history. Edelgard’s whole plan of being an Asshole Atheist Emperor out to completely obliterate the church and persecute its followers feels like a really bonkers blend of the Reformation and the Enlightenment in a way that would be absolutely fucking nonsense in the context of the fantasy 1180s the game actually dates itself to. The game’s attempts to go “The church has been repressing technology!!!!!!” is also extremely goddamn funny once you start to take into account all of the game’s beastly anachronisms and note that Fodlan on damn near all levels is actually centuries ahead of where it should be keeping in mind again that it takes place in the fantasy 1180s. The game dates itself to the fantasy 12th century, but acts like it’s in the fantasy 15th-16th century, and also the school uinforms are blatantly 19th century.

And all of this would be perfectly fine given how Fire Emblem’s never been one for historical accuracy, except FE3H is blatantly trying to go for a sense of realism and authenticity when it comes to its medievalness, and pulls way more from IRL medievalisms compared to past FE games, so it just makes this giant pile of anachronisms even funnier. It’s not something you’d normally notice if all you know is modern day medieval European fantasy rather than working on some medieval studies like I’ve been, but boy howdy if you do know the things and start pulling at the threads does it get buck wild. I want to do some For Fun research now and make a giant list and analysis of all the historical stuff FE3H fucks up on because it’d be really funny to do so. At the very least if it had to be serious it’d be a fun way to talk about how a work of fiction can feel authentic without actually being accurate.
