🐠 Daily Fish Fact: 🐠

The Wahoo is a scombrid fish, (the mackerel, tuna, and bonito family) found worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas. It is best known to sports fishermen, as its speed and high-quality flesh makes it a prized and valued game fish. The barracuda is sometimes confused with the wahoo, but it is easy to distinguish from the latter two species. Barracuda have prominent scales and larger, dagger-like teeth, and lack the caudal keels and blade-like (forked) tail characteristic of the scombrids.

tbh i'm having a kinda rough week, my brother in law is in the icu so i've been there pretty much all weekend helping support everyone. things are definitely a lot better than they were (he's officially stable and improving neurologically) but it's also been a lot of stress of course. but it's also also been nice to just see everyone and not have a packed weekend of plans like i normally do!! I'm also working a new job that i fucking hate but it pays better than anything else i could find and they're flexible about me having to leave to deal with all this so im just suffering through that slowly but surely.

my favorite freshwater fish is probably a brook trout or sculpin!! i also keep a tank of black neon tetras so those are cool too. Saltwater wise i'm big into sharks and rays but i also love scombrids so like tuna and mackerel i guess. I also did undergrad research on mullet and i fucking love those fish they look so happy to see you like little water puppies. i could come up with more funky crazy stuff but that's what comes to mind. I don't eat fish cause i'm just a picky eater but i did have a smoked salmon with a maple bacon glaze once that was to die for, and i also had a grilled mahi mahi sandwich on the beach that was super yum once. thanks for the q's!!

Transcriptomics Reveals Tumorigenesis and Pathogen Response in Scombrid Puffy Snout Syndrome

Scombrids represent some of the most economically important fisheries globally. However, increased interest in creating aquaculture systems for these fish has increased the risk of disease emergence. One such disease, Puffy Snout Syndrome (PSS), causes collagenous tissue growths on the face, in numerous scombrid taxa. PSS has only been documented in captive-held fish populations and can lead to high mortality rates. Despite this, little is known about PSS's causative agent(s) and the immune response they elicit. Therefore, we leveraged metatranscriptomic data of symptomatic-captive, asymptomatic-captive, and healthy-wild Pacific Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) to evaluate the physiological characteristics of PSS infections and identify a mechanism of disease. PSS symptomatic-captive and asymptomatic-captive mackerel showed distinct gene expression patterns from their wild counterparts. Genes involved in tumorigenesis, immune response, and pathophysiology were over-expressed in captive-held fish. In particular, the Wnt9 pathway was increased by more than 2 orders of magnitude in captive fish, potentially representing a diagnostic feature of this disease. Together, these host physiological data and our past visual identification of RNA virus-like particles in afflicted tissues suggest that viral-mediated oncogenesis may be driving PSS in captive mackerel. http://dlvr.it/SrJ0Hz

for me "dog" is exclusively reserved for moray eels, elasmobranchs (sharks, rays, skates), large predatory scombrids (dogtooth mackerel, tuna, etc.), barracuda, and anything else with that big+pelagic+silver+pointy vibe. don't ask me to explain why I have no idea lol

Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) are dazzling denizens of the California coast. Migrating to colder waters off of Washington in the summer and down to warmer Baja California in the winter, plentiful parties of these planktivorous pisces are commonly spotted south of Point Conception, where they make a meal of drifting morsels while dodging hungry hordes of seabirds, seals and tuna.

(This latter predator must add some insult to injury in the fray, as Pacific mackerel are scombrids and close cousins to their larger, faster tunid terrors.)

Pacific mackerel were once a staple in the Cannery Row days, and today are a responsibly managed, sustainable fishery along the West Coast.

A final fun fact: Schooling fishes of different species tend to group together based on size—every now and again there will be a standout jack mackerel Trachurus symmetricus in our exhibit lacking the distinctive green-gray-blue backs of the Pacific mackerel. We don’t give names to the fishes but if you find a sly horse mackerel feel free to call it ‘Waldo’!

Heavenly chanting echoing in the rafters; Fish... of... the... Day! Who will be our guide to help drag our way through the inner ruins of Monday? Oh it’s Wahoo, Acanthocybium solandri.

Don’t be fooled like we were by the Wahoo’s excitement-filled name. They in fact are known among the sub-tropical angling community for their reserved and solemn natures. Thankfully these traits have not dissolved Wahoo’s personality into cynicism or miserliness. Rather, Wahoo’s are frequently found to be peaceful and introspective in character, preferring a gentle evening and a simple squid supper to any hyperactive frivolity.

Indeed, this tendency to quietude has produced in the Wahoo a wonderfully tempered wisdom. Many an angler in need of timely advice has found the sage Wahoo’s even temper and moderate words a calming force amid the frequent squalls of oceanic living. 

Other scombrids often dismiss the Wahoo as grim or dour. Indeed one could be forgiven for wondering what business the light-hearted fools of the Halfwits Club could have here. 

But we remind that judgement is a reflective light, and the known shape of friendship’s bounds need not count the full sum of two spirits converging. 

We sent Wahoo a request for some short story or other we could use on our blog. We promptly received a letter, written in a tidy script. It read:

Dear Halfwits,

My aunt in law, a lancetfish from the open ocean, told an interesting story recently. She was passing by and thought we could share a little something non-caffeinated together. As I prepared us a wakame infusion she related her story. She had floated in the water column all day waiting for a tunicate or some other morsel to float by. The wait seemed a long one that day and she found a growing restlessness accompanying her hunger. Some sprat did indeed wander by, but bumbled and circled for what seemed an age outside her reach. She beaded her attention on it and when finally the sprat came close, she struck and was sure not to miss. Ravenous in her hunger, she consumed the fish in a second and it was gone. But the little bones stuck in her throat and great discomfort followed. It was a full day until she was back to normal. My aunt, she said ‘cook even the small fish with care’. I thought that wonderful. My aunt is a good woman to conclude such a thing from her experience. We sat for tea mostly in silence but we were comfortable I believe, glad simply for the company. PARASITISM may be thought as the condition of life which is normal and necessary for an organism nourishing itself at the trouble of another---called the host-without destroying it like the predator will its prey. Actually, there's a complete group of transitions between the two conditions. In order to live regularly on its coordinator, the parasite, save in exceptional conditions, remains in long-term contact with it, perhaps on its outer surface, perhaps within it. Parasitism is then an association, generally constant, between two different organisms, one which lives at the trouble of the other.  

commensalism   The association comes with an essentially unilateral character: it's important to the parasite, which dies for insufficient nourishment if separated from the coordinator; it isn't whatsoever essential to the variety. The business of the parasite is improved in line with the conditions under which it lives on the sponsor: version is the hallmark of parasitism. But you can picture, and there exist in fact, associations devoid of the same unilateral persona: two kinds associating regularly but without the main one living on the other. One of these may indeed gain in safeguard or nutrition without the other's gaining any gain. These organizations are grouped under the word commensalism. In some of them, which come under the going of mutualism, there are evidently reciprocal advantages for both associates. Furthermore, the standard localization of 1 species within the interior of a different one may have a particular spatial significance without any physiological relationship being involved. Associations of this characteristics come under the proceeding of inquilinism. It leads to the particular botanists call formations of crops; the zoologist will easily find analogous groupings which are termed bioca:noses. A coral reef comprises a significant association of the kind, which includes a certain consistent stableness among all the creatures which live there and come constantly into contact. It would be possible to cite from the ocean shores of Europe many other associations of the same kind but more limited, each comprising a definite society. The terrestrial fauna shows them equally clearly;we shall have to come back to those worried about the sociable insects, particularly ants and termites. On an isolated seed, particularly a tree, a complete series of kinds associates regularly. These basic associations, however, involve an extremely loose relationship, significantly less correct than that denoted by the word commensalism.

COMMENSALISM IN Sea ANIMALS

Commensalism implies a normal association between two types, recurring constantly in widely separated localities. On research, it is found that this simple relationship includes very marked improvements, particularly of a psychophysiological nature. The double threat of research into this kind of phenomenon lays, on the main one side, in getting to them preconceived ideas of too subjective nature, bordering by using an illusory anthropomorphism and, on the other side, in trying to reduce intricate facts to simple primary reactions. Why don't we consider the classical circumstance of the commensalism of sharks and the pilot seafood (Naucrates ductor) or the remora (Echeneis remora). These scombrids accompany the sharks, the remora attaching itself to them temporarily by means of its dorsal fin, improved to create a sucker. This function of life presupposes a very precise version of nervous reflexes which can be surmised whenever a remora and a Carcharias are seen together, as I have seen them within an aquarium at Bermuda.  

commensalism   The first follows the other as a bit of iron does indeed a magnet, obeying instantly the incessant and irregular changes of way shown by the shark in an aquarium. The synchronism of the remora's swimming start of the shark must be associated with an in-depth adaptation of sensory organs and nerve centers, a version as significant as that of the sucker in the morphological field. Out of this case, it is clear that the reality of commensalism must be researched from life, and so far as possible through a test. Apparently fairly simple, but probably highly complex, is the similar association between anemones and fishes known in many localities in tropical seas, and studied carefully by Sluiter 48 in Batavia. A seafood of the genus Trachichthys (Amphiprion) always remains amidst the tentacles of a large anemone. Plate, in addition, has seen this connection in debt Sea, where in fact the anemone is, corresponding to him, Crambactis arabica, more than 30 cm. in diameter. In case the anemone closes up, the seafood is imprisoned and momentarily vanishes within its intestinal cavity. Now, it is merely necessary to be there when an anemone's victim comes into connection with the tentacles and is also enclosed within these to observe how formidable contact with the nematocysts can be. The fishes cited here must thus own an immunity from the urticarious poisons of the anemones that they regular, an immunity which includes, no doubt, been gradually attained and which, by itself only, witnesses to the very definite nature of a link which is apparently purely casual. This association satisfies two different needs, nutrition, and protection. Regarding diet, the authors do not give very exact information but it might be supposed that whenever the anemone engulfs its prey and, at the same time, closes within the seafood, the second option gets a talk about of the meals. As for safety, Sluiter has shown it directly. For several months he could keep living Trachichthys in an aquarium where he had located carnivorous fishes and also the anemone. The Trachichthys never remaining the latter. Alternatively, when placed by itself with the carnivorous varieties within an aquarium they were always eaten after a couple of hours. The anemone, then, truly shelters the seafood. Thus here we have a good example of a highly efficient association comprising correct physiological immunitand, very probably, co-ordination of the reflexes of both associates. It really is evident a similar interpretation must get to a link, easily observed on People from France coasts, between acraspedote medusae, specifically, Rhizostoma cuvieri, and the amphipod Hyperina medusarutn, or young fishes, mainly Caranx trachurus. Hyperina swims in shoals under the umbrella of the Medusa and can take shelter in the sub-genital cavities. Caranx varieties fair sized shoals with the same behavior, never departing the medusa and sometimes taking refuge within it, as do the amphipods. Exactly the same association has been met with in very distant regions. It's been found between a Caranx and a crambessid in the Gambier Islands in the Australian Pacific by Seurat, and between Caranx melampygus and Crambessa palmipes near Mauritius by LuneP6. The customers of the genus Physalia, whose nematocysts are specifically urticarious, are frequently combined with little fishes (Nomeus gronovii) related to Caranx and apparently immune to the poison of the siphonophore;* they evidently derive safety from its closeness and possibly gain sharing its prey. Associations of this type are very common on coral reefs. Coutiere 22 has seen lots of examples at Djibouti. A clear pontoniid prawn, Periclimenes, constantly remains, like the fishes cited above, within the area of protection developed by the tentacles of a big anemone; anchovies, Engraulis, take refuge amongst the long spines of the sea urchin, Diadema setosum; a huge asteroid, Cu/cita, permanen~ly shelters a hippolytid prawn beneath its disc.
