Things I’ve learned so far as a scopist:

Many attorneys cannot speak and stumble over their words.

People (not just the rich) can get away with a shit-ton with attorneys that graduated top of their class.

Holy shit don’t let your ego get in the way of you paying for a fucking translator to be there. Holy shit. Pay for a translator to be there is there’s a language barrier. Broken language skills will kill a deposition and make you all look foolish.

Some people will try to sue just to sue bc they can.

A lot of legal battles going on are still going on from 2021. They aren’t being seen until now. Our legal system steamrolls the rich and famous so their cases get seen and done first. Everything else can wait.

There’s pretentious assholes in every field of work who believe they’re better than everyone in the business. (They aren’t, but they can continue to pretend.)

I went ahead and bought the unit of my scoping class that I hadn't purchased yet, even though I could technically pass the course without it, because I heard that it includes stuff like invoicing that I really need to know before I can start working. So I've got two units left to go: The Business of Scoping, which has nine lessons (and the ability to set up a mentoring session, not sure exactly how that works yet); and The Professional Scopist, which has 18 lessons. So 27 lessons and a couple tests, and I'll be DONE! I think as long as I don't slack off, I might actually be able to start working by the beginning of May O.O

Of course, I'm immediately running headfirst into technical issues that weirdly do not seem to have been pointed out or addressed, like I'm the first person taking this course even though I know I'm not. This time, when I downloaded the workbook and answer key for the self-graded quizzes we're supposed to take at the end of each lesson...all of the correct answers were already marked ._. Not just in the answer key, but in the quiz workbook itself. So - *siiiiiiiiiiiigh* - once again I'm reaching out to the teacher to say, "Hey, there's a problem with the course that REALLY should have been weeded out in a QA phase before launching it, which somehow no one has pointed out even amongst this group of people who are being trained to nitpick stuff." I hate feeling like almost every interaction I have with the teacher is pointing out issues, like I'm the one squeaky wheel who's always complaining...but also my integrity (or the guilty feeling when you know you're cheating, at least) has been needling at me, so I can't just not say anything -_-

In other news, the first lesson is all about setting up a business and whether you should go for a sole proprietorship or an LLC and AHHHHHHHHHHHHH dskfjhasdlkf;dkslf

I am so close to the end of the software training unit in my scoping class. I literally have one practice section left to do, and then it's just the final exam. Only problem is I'm stuck on something that's not lining up, and so now I have to wait to get an answer on that ^^'

These last few lessons have been on setting up the transcript to automatically create an index, and something called RealTime, which enables the court reporter and scopist to sync up so the scopist can edit the transcript while the trial (or whatever) is going on, so the transcript can be complete very soon after the session is over, rather than waiting to receive it a week later or something. It sounds rather stressful and overwhelming, to be honest, and I've already decided I'm definitely not going to even attempt it for the first few years I'm in this job, if I ever do get around to it. It pays much better than normal scoping, but it's really not for beginners. The lessons on them were really just to give an introduction to the subject and point students in the right direction to look into it further down the line.

Anyway, the practice stuff I'm stuck on in the indexing, because even after following the instructions to the letter (I think!), the page numbers aren't showing up when I make the index. Which...kind of defeats the whole purpose of having an index in the first place -_-

Well, I have now scoped a whole real transcript! With audio and everything! There are two more connected to this lesson, and I think this was the shortest one? We'll see.

Anyway, I was able to put a lot of stuff I've learned into practice with this, and it just...felt really good. I moved very slowly, because they give you both the unedited transcript and what it looked like after a real scopist went through it, so after I completed each page, I compared it to the finished transcript to see where I was off (and some of the edits I think I did better than the official one!).

But it was very good practice, and a lot easier than I was afraid it would be. Some of the things I dithered over would be things I could just ask a client about in a real job, because it comes down to personal preference or how they want to format things. And it just felt very...achievable, I guess. I can actually see myself doing this full-time.

I still have a long way to go with the course, but this was a much-needed dose of encouragement!

My homework for this week has consisted of going through the training videos that come with Case CATalyst, the editing software scopists use. It's very dry, just going through all the different buttons on the toolbar, keyboard shortcuts, that sort of thing. I debated skipping ahead to the actual lessons, since the videos are optional, but ultimately decided it's probably best to review all of this stuff first, so at least I'll have a better idea of where to look if I can't remember how to do something. The videos aren't labeled very well, so it's not intuitive where to look at a glance :/

Anyway, hopefully next week will be a little more interesting, as I start actually doing some hands-on fiddling with sample transcripts.
