What a big year for me! I think I improved my line work/shading, reached 3000 followers, and helped organize one of the biggest ZaDr projects I've ever seen :) Not about to rest on my laurels now, but I'm happy to celebrate what I've accomplished. YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE LAST OF ME, NOT BY FAR

I was going to write this out in the tags but apparently I have a lot to say about this so I'm gonna leak my thoughts here: Digestible for a younger audience makes sense over all for the reason why we see Zim say this. But, if we want to get into deep lore/character study, I've always thought it was a way for Zim to project that he is powerful, and to live up to the grand delusion that Dibs paranoia paints him as. He wants to be that monster and he wants to be untouchable. Zim knows what evil means and what it represents. Evil is quiet and looming, evil is loud and horrifying, evil is hiding under your nose in plain sight. Why wouldn't Zim aspire to be that sort of entity, if given the chance? A way to be flashy and dramatic, to give his time and effort to a project, and get attention back for it, even if it's negative attention. The only reason that Zim ever calls himself evil is to say "LOOK AT ME!! LOOK WHAT I CAN DO! I DARE YOU TO EVEN TRY TO STOP ME!". It's entirely fed by what he can get back from it, he gets reassurance that he is scary, powerful, something to be reckoned with. Something that probably brings a lot of comfort to a small weird alien on a gross brutal planet surrounded by discomforts and deadly possibilities. Zim is "evil" as a source of hope.

I’m rewatching Invader Zim and one thing that I never noticed before is that ZIM, on several occasions, calls himself evil. He has “evil plans”- which is very strange to me because shouldn’t ZIM see himself as the hero? Or maybe not so much a hero, but as a competent soldier who’s just doing his duty? So I wonder why he’s so into the evil persona (he is evil but you get what I mean).

Neither his leaders, nor his comrades, as far as I know have mentioned the word “evil”. Yes, it’s called Operation Impending Doom because they are .. dooming their enemies. But in their minds, wouldn’t they still not register that as an “evil” thing? Because it directly benefits them and their empire.

So I wonder why ZIM calls his plans evil and why he’s so into this villain thing. Does evil just have a different connotation to him? Did his exposure to Earth media introduced him to the concept of evil? Is it because Dib calls him evil, so he’s taken it on as a label? Does he really think his actions are evil, or is it just something he says to sound cool and threatening?

It’s thrown me off more than it should, because I’m wondering what the implications are (even though I know it’s likely just to make it easily digestible for a young audience)

If you want long lasting impact it's got to be Dib doing something that maintains Zim’s ego at a time where Zim is about to break. It'd take Zim going to a pretty dark place for him to actually be at the point of really listening to someone outside himself.

Zim’s drive to do things is built on sand that Zim wills himself into believing is a rock. He's not supported meaningfully, the Tallest placate him to keep him away from Irk. Zim is not part of the groups hes supposedly allied with, he's a danger to his own home empire. Irkens largely do not like Zim- either because of these factors, or causing them, is up to you; he's weird and selfish, overly enthusiastic, loud, impulsive, and smart/unlucky enough for those impulses to put him squarely at the center of disaster.

At best, Zim's had people obsess over him in a way that oversteps Zims boundaries- affection without really caring how Zim himself feels (Keef) or near blind obedience with Skoodge. It's clear Zim doesn’t respect those people, only listens when they pose a threat to him or he can use them as a tool for his own goals (even then, all of Zims listening skills are selective).

Generally being nice to Zim isn't the way to get him to take interest in you, or to see you as equal in sentience.

Getting Zim to take notice of you in a way that would make him feel truly, deeply appreciative, it's a tall ask. Zim doesn’t see kindness or obedience as an asset. He sees people who portray those characteristics as tools.

Here's where Dib comes in. He's a rival and a challenge and a nuisance.

When Zim is at the end of his rope the very threat of Dib outplaying him is motivating enough to get Zim going again.

The high stakes game of cat and mouse, the spy vs spy style antics, that's play to Zim. That's the most fun he's ever had. Dib being part of that, Dib challenging him in a way to do better, to fight harder and prevent his own defeat (I would argue) is the most fulfilling connection Zim has ever made in his life. The combative nature of how they interact, the ability to match wits, to win and to be defeated; that's what sets Dib appart as an equal.

Dib is Zims enemy, his trust is hard earned. Dib will not bullshit Zim with compliments, he will tell it like it is if Zim is doing something insane or dangerous. It's almost like, supporive non-support. A barrier, a guideline, a blueprint. "If x is true then Y must be false", "If Dib says something is a certain way he is telling the truth".

There is an almost sporting respect that Zim has for Dib. Zim BELIEVES DIB what few times they have called a truce, even when Dib has no intention of honesty or sticking to the rules of that truce. Zim has only ever given that same blind trust to the Tallest themselves. And when he has, I think Zim on some level understands that he is using them for what they are willing to do to placate him.

If Zim was at his lowest point, in dire need of something to cling to to give his life meaning again, that Zim would be primed to listen more than any other Zim. If Dib did something to be an actual solid foundation for him, to feed the notion that Zim is as good at what he does as Zim thinks he is- Zim would ride off of that high for years.

I'm not a huge fan of the comics but I do like bits and chunks of them. Right now I'm thinking of the time Zim forced Dib to compliment him; Dib said Zims boots are cool.

I'm inclined to believe Zim thinks of that compliment when he's alone, kicking his feet as a zing of pride flows through him, thinking that Dib must think the rest of Zim is cool too.

Zim thinking; " Stupid little dirt monkey, of course I'm cool, I'm cooler than you." <- obviously vainglorious, but on a higher octive, it's trusting. It's the genuine compliment of a respected enemy and it STAYS in Zim's fallible mind, it's important enough to remember.

In breif: Zim trusts and believes Dib, sees Dib as an equal, has gone to Dib for help more than once. If Dib ever gave Zim some kind of "you're the most diabolical monster I've ever met" motivational speech, that would do more for Zim than any physical gift or gesture of kindness.

It's got to be based in Zim’s ego and it's got to be Dib telling Zim things to reaffirm the things Zim desperately wants to live up to. Zim needs to see that he has been seen as an awe inspiring wonder, Zim craves that more than anything.

It would be the last nail in the coffin towards deeper feelings and Zim beginning to recognize that he actually cares what Dib thinks of him.

My favorite ZaDr is when they still hate and are disguted by the other on some level. That instinctual push pull of implacable need and vocal revulsion. That's the BEST essence of them.
