Learn how countries are supporting the SDG Agenda through rural tourism - Rural tourism and the SDGs.
Tumblr media
Among 79 countries responding to the first survey of UNWTO member states on tourism and rural development, conducted in 2023, five SDGs emerged as the most popular when planning for or implementing rural tourism activities: SDG 8 ‘Decent work and economic growth’ is the most significant SDG for rural tourism, followed by SDG 1 ‘No poverty’, SDG 11 ‘Sustainable cities and communities’; SDG 5 ‘Gender equality’ and SDG 12 Responsible production and consumption.
At a policy level, tourism can serve as a powerful driver for achieving SDGs in rural areas.

UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024 launch | Online 8:30–9:30 a.m. EDT, 1:30–2:30 p.m. CET, 3:30–4:30 p.m. EAT.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO WASTE 2024 - UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024 launch.
To mark the second annual International Day of Zero Waste, UNEP will launch its Food Waste Index Report 2024 on 27 March 2024. The report provides the latest global estimates on food waste, occurring at retail and consumer level. Addressing food waste is an important facet of embracing zero waste and tackling the climate crisis.
Objective: UNEP, as custodian of the SDG 12.3 food waste indicator, publishes a triennial report tracking country-level progress to halve food waste by 2030. First published in 2021, the initial report demonstrated that household food waste is a global challenge, not limited to high-income countries. UNEP and report authors WRAP will highlight the report’s findings and recommendations and the panel discussion will explore G20 action to deliver Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.

Opening plenary (SDG Action Weekend, Mobilization Day).
As the opening to SDG Action Weekend, the opening plenary of the Saturday proceedings will emphasize the urgency of this moment. Halfway to the 2030 Deadline, we are not halfway there –many goals remain off-track and global economic, geopolitical, and environmental headwinds threaten progress in other areas.
The 2030 Agenda is a promise, not a guarantee, and humanity is in the hotseat. In the face of these challenges, participants will be reminded by speakers that transformation, at scale, is possible. We have the right tools and capabilities but now we need everyone, individually and collectively, to channel these resources more efficiently to deliver on the SDGs. This session will feature a keynote speech from a former Head of State, providing a sober reality check of the moment and emphasizing the possibility for us to achieve our promise. To close, an empowering performance from Yemi Aladewill set an uplifting tone as stakeholders head into the programming of SDG Mobilization Day.
---
To maximize the SDG Summit's impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, UN entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.
The SDG Action Weekend will consist of the SDG Mobilization Day on Saturday, 16 September, and the SDG Acceleration Day on Sunday, 17 September at UNHQ in New York.
The SDG Mobilization Day (16 September) will create an opportunity for stakeholders from all sectors to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and mobilize towards an ambitious SDG Summit and UN General Assembly High-Level Week.
The SDG Acceleration Day (17 September) will be centred around the UN High-Impact Initiatives
The SDG Summit on 18-19 September will mark the mid point of the SDGs. It must secure the breakthroughs and momentum needed to change course and achieve the SDGs by 2030. To maximize the Summit's impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, UN entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.

Oceans, Overfishing and Sustainable Gastronomy - The Ocean Conference (5 to 9 June 2017), Side-Event.
Of particular relevance to effectively tackling overfishing is SDG12, intended to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. This goal entails targets on, inter alia, reducing food waste, raising awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles, promoting sustainable tourism, including local culture and products, sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources, management of chemicals and wastes, and significantly reduce their release to water in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.
Side-event to the Ocean Conference organized by the Permanent Missions of Thailand, Italy and Peru.

How Preventing Food Waste Supports Global Biodiversity?
Tumblr media
Reducing food waste is a crucial step towards protecting biodiversity and staying within the planetary boundary for biodiversity loss. Businesses are well-positioned for a meaningful impact through food waste reduction and mindful consumption. Here are some ways we can reduce food waste and protect biodiversity in the workplace:
Measure your food waste to understand the baseline level and top-wasted items. Winnow’s client journey starts with a food waste baseline period to capture existing waste trends and pinpoint low-hanging fruit. Then, we get more ambitious by optimizing portion sizes and menu design, reducing overproduction, and reworking leftovers creatively.
Compost food waste that can’t be prevented. It’s important to first reduce, then compost, because preventing food waste saves nine times more emissions than sending it to anaerobic digestion or compost. However, composting food waste can still help reduce methane emissions from landfills and produce nutrient-rich fertilizer for gardens and farms. Composting can also help reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers, which can harm biodiversity.
Support sustainable agriculture: We can support sustainable agriculture practices that prioritize biodiversity conservation and reduce the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides. We can also support organizations that work to protect habitats and wildlife.
Food waste is a major threat to biodiversity, and we need to take action to address it. By reducing food waste, composting, supporting sustainable agriculture, and making conscious choices about what we eat, we can help protect our planet's biodiversity for future generations. Learn more about Winnow’s food waste solutions for every kitchen here.

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
youtube
Reducing food losses and waste is critical to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, SDG 12 aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, which contains a wide range of targets related to food waste.
SDG Target 12.3
By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses. In order to measure food waste and losses, two indices have been proposed:
Sub-Indicator 12.3.1.a – Food Loss Index
The Food Loss Index (FLI) focuses on food losses that occur from production up to (and not including) the retail level. It measures the changes in percentage losses for a basket of 10 main commodities by country in comparison with a base period. The FLI will contribute to measure progress towards SDG Target 12.3.
Sub-Indicator 12.3.1.b – Food Waste Index
A proposal for measuring Food Waste, which comprises the retail and consumption levels is under development. UNEP is taking the lead on this sub-indicator.

First Observance of the International Day of Zero Waste at U.N. Headquarter.
The International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, support the societal shift towards circularity and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The waste sector contributes significantly to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and pollution. Humanity generates an estimated 2.24 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, of which only 55 per cent is managed in controlled facilities. Every year, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems.
Zero-waste initiatives can foster sound waste management and minimize and prevent waste, helping to address the triple planetary crisis, protect the environment, enhance food security and improve human health and well-being.
