Plant of the Day
Tuesday 5 November 2024
The seedheads of these ornamental Allium cultivar are being supported and protected by the surround plant stems and offer some fireworks in this late autumn border.

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 29 January 2025
The hardy annual or biennial Lunaria annua (honesty, Chinese money, grandpa's specs, money in both pockets, moon seed, penny flower, satin pod, silver plate, white satin, silver dollar) has a number of varieties with purple, white or lilac coloured flowers and some have variegated foliage. The major display feature of all these is that in autumn and winter after flowering there are flat, round, silvery seed pods. The plants will readily self-seed to provide a succession of plants.

Minimal gardening tasks accomplished today again. First I put in a few panels of decorative wire fencing (alleyway freebie) to hold the cornflower out of the stepping stone path.
Tumblr media
I wasn't hugely fussed about the path but it was starting to crowd the tomatoes on the other side of it. Like all the way where that teal t-post is...the plant is HUGE.
I also did some pruning of the various bushes. Mostly all the twigs and small branches that haven't put out leaves, but also had to beat back some euonymus and some trumpet vine. Went back this afternoon to gather up all the cuttings for the greenwaste dumpster but startled a fledgling grackle that had taken cover in it. So I left it all for now.

Figured out that the secret to harvesting enough peas so that some make it inside is to have eaten a big meal right beforehand. The snap peas will get eaten for snack later, the snow peas will get blanched and frozen.
Tumblr media
You can see the roots developing on one of the new French tarragon cuttings. Will let them grow a bit more before transplanting into an actual pot. The second cutting is still surviving, just no visible roots yet.

Borage is starting to bloom. Got blue and purple, now I just need for one of the other plants to be pink and I'll have the trifecta of this mix.
Tumblr media
First pepper forming of the year! Of course it's a Shishito because those are production powerhouses. Everything is covered in blossoms though, so I expect great things shortly from the rest.
Tumblr media
Ugh. First cabbageworm of the season too. The Chinese broccoli floret-stems should be ready to harvest tomorrow and then the plant will be tossed to the chickens. It's not worth fighting when it's the end of May.
Tumblr media
Apparently leaf miners like kale? That's okay though. The kale patch is for the chickens anyway...this just determines which leaves get harvested for their enjoyment first.
Tumblr media
One of the sunflower seedlings got taken out by a chomp at the base. Happened during the day so...squirrel. Maybe I should put a loose collar of aluminum foil on the rest of them until they get too big to do this to?
Tumblr media
Oh oops. The tomatoes I had to move out of the cold frame for getting too tall...have gotten too tall again. Right. So getting these transplanted ~somewhere~ just became a priority task. I need to finish transplanting the lemon bergamot and all of those sweet potato slips anyway so it'll just be a transplanting day tomorrow.
