Alfa Romeo 147 GTA 

Launched in 2002 as the top of the range hatchback model for Alfa Romeo, the GTA is powered by the classic Busso 3.2 litre 24 valve V6. Said to produce some 247bhp it gave a top speed of circa 153mph. Characterised by wider arches, Teledial 17-inch alloys and a more aggressive grille design, most examples had six-speed manual transmission whilst a small number featured the Selespeed automated manual system. In total, 5,029 147 GTAs were built, 1,004 of which were Selespeeds.

First of all this car is a master piece, its by far my favourite 2000 - 2019 car released by Alfa. Its such a ridiculous idea to put an V6 engine in a hot hatch, but Alfa did it. 5000 ever made and which 1000 of them came with the terrible selespeed transmission (Not bad as the SMG 3 transmission, but it can come pretty close)

This specific car was really expensive, but it was owned by a rich doctor who had connections to the dealer and he sold the car because he had 3 of them. The photos are from july 2018 and you can see how incredible clean the car is. Look at the rims and the leather inside! Remember the car came from 2003, so it was atleast 15 years old.

Which brings this first to the good things; The sound! Its probally my favourite V6 sounding car to date. Take a listen by yourself how a GTA engine sounds: (not my clip)

People always turn around their heads and on car meetings its quite a populair car. The acceleration is bloody fast, 0-100 in about 6 seconds. You get blown away how fast this car is. Its by far my favourite car ive ever driven. (I have driven a GTV6, 4C and a Giulia QV for example) But the engine also has it downsides... quite a few actually:

First of all the understeer in this car is tremendous. You really underestimate how much understeer it produces because of the big heavy engine in the front taking all the weight. The car came in 2003 with 300mm Brembo brakes, but Alfa decided to up the ante to put on 330mm Brembo's around mid 2004. Alot of people complained about the bad braking and how the 300mm couldnt handle it. The car in the pictures has 330mm brakes.

Also the engine has little oil leaks which was extremely common in a GTA engine (the 3.2 atleast). It starts with a bit of Oil but it can be pretty bad with some expensive maintenance. Take a look for yourself: https://imgur.com/a/IW7eJZS

Another downside of the engine was the timing belt. The engine was so perfectly fit in the car that you cant reach your hands to the timing belt. So the whole V6 needs to get out of the car before you can swap the belt. Also dont forget that only specific people can do this, because Alfa has GTA timing belt certifications at that time given to mechanics that works at Alfa dealers. Estimate cost of an timing belt swap? €1250 is pretty average. Once in the 4 years or every 80000 km's

Oh yeah the engine also likes a little bit of fuel. 1:4 kilometers in the city and 1:8, but if youre lucky 1:10 on the highway, depends on your speed.

The other maintenance wasnt that bad at all. Only the rust was something that could be really bad if you didnt pay attention to the floor of the car. The electronics could be also kinda expensive if something broke down. After all its an Italian car.

Maintenance was around €2000 per year on average. The fuel is also expensive.

Is the car worth to own at this point? Yes and no. If you have alot of money and a car / alfa fan, you should get one now at some point, because the prices of this thing are getting really expensive the last few years. Maintenance isnt cheap and i really do not recommend to own this car if this is your only car. It will make your wallet cry. This is already a classic car and i cant imagine the car and part prices over 10-15 years.
