awesome iOS 18/MacOS Sequoia review

this review is from the perspective of a 2020 iMac and iPhone 12 mini user lalalalal

-first of all I dont appreciate how it ate my widgets once I updated my Mac. automatic one point deduction

-before the update I thought I would hate the iOS 18 photos app revamp when actually I like it now. it feels yummy to scroll through photos and the customizability really makes up for the one or two extra swipes to get to stuff now. also VIDEOS LOOP AND I LIKE THAT

-the iPhone mirroring on sequoia took a little bit to set up. I had to restart my entire Mac because it refused to find my phone. my iMac is a 2020 model so its the ONLY intel iMac capable of iPhone mirroring (I got super lucky) and now that it works I really like it. animations are choppy but that is a little expected, and with as little knowledge as I have I can't figure out how to access the control center. it's not in the view menu like other settings and I can't swipe from the upper right corner. also last complaint, it is finicky to move the window around, as you have to wait for a popup to appear when you hover on top of the window. other than that it does everything I dreamed of. (that is, viewing Splatnet 3 on my Mac lolll) yep I wouldn't have updated if it weren't for that.

THIS IS SO CRINGE BUT I GOTTA YAP ABOUT MY BABY

So I’ve mentioned my Pokémon ocs before but I’ve never really gone in depth with them *slams hand on table* AND TODAY IS THE DAY THAT I DO Ahem-

The basis of the region is that it’s similar to Kalos with the idea of mega evolution and everyone loves fashion. Hell yeah. 

Starting with my daughter, there is Phoebe. A very enthusiastic teenage girl who wants to travel around the entire region and photograph every notable place such as mines, mountaintops, towns/cities, literally everything that she thinks looks cool. 

Her ace Pokémon is a male absol named Sasha (because my ace Pokémon in X was an absol named Sasha and I love + miss him every day) 

They are THE duo. Wherever Phoebe goes, Sasha is right behind her. Think Penny and Bolt from Bolt. They met when Phoebe was a kid and found Sasha injured in the woods so she grabbed her parents to help nurture this random absol back to full health so it would hopefully live a normal life out in the wild again. 

Except he never left and everyone in the family became smitten with him and he was officially Phoebe’s first Pokémon. 

When she was younger Phoebe always assumed that she would just inherit her mom’s business or maybe become a professor alongside her dad, until she hacked into her artistic side with a camera and her love for photography was born. 

She’s quite the tomboy who can usually be seen wearing athletic clothing but on some occasions she’ll model more gothic outfits for her mom’s boutique. 

NOW ONTO HER PARENTS

Their names are Alister and Caliste

They’ve known each other for probably forever and used to have a dual type gym, specializing in fairy and dark types with Caliste’s speciality being fairy types and Alister’s being dark. Which is ironic considering Caliste is a lot more gothic while Alister is not. 

A while before Phoebe was born they actually gave the gym to someone else as their other jobs had really flown. With Alister becoming the city’s resident professor and Caliste opening up her own boutique. 

Their main Pokémon are a shiny gardevoir and a houndoom that can both mega evolve. 

They are the Morticia and Gomez Addam’s of the Pokémon universe. 

Except Alister isn’t really goth whatsoever-

They are so very in love and it is so very sickening. 

Now Alister is a little bit crazy. Just a little bit of a psychopath but who doesn’t love a guy who’s a bit of a freak?

His research focuses on fossils but more specifically the aspects of bringing them back to life. He has a personal goal to figure out how to revive ancient Pokémon so that their abilities can be used to help humanity find better energy sources. 

His colleagues think he’s a little ridiculous for thinking that that could be possible..

except for some people who think that a new energy source could lead to something entirely new. 

Dimension travel. Maybe even time travel. 

These ideas give Alister, also known as Professor Sequoia, a rose tinted plan. 

A rose tinted plan that makes the creation of Team Astro. This region’s evil team where the members want to play with the limits of the universe.

Oh my goodness! Very excited for the first chance to ramble about Sequoia! The beloved tav who has haunted my thoughts for well over a year now. :))))

Reserved, intelligent, and constantly shifting in and out of sight amongst the trees, Sequoia was born to a nomadic commune devoted to protecting the old-growth forests that homed them. The life that taught her how to mend wounds with tree sap, shoot arrows cleanly from the highest canopy, and even how--with a breath of magic--to silence the sound of her heart from any prying prey or hunter... also incited her deepest wish. To see the world beyond the edge of her family's forged path.

Adventurers who shared the campfires of her youth always brought stories of glistening cities and oceans, so empty and vast. Old enough to hold a leadership role amongst her fellow nomads, it took all her passion to sway their predetermined course. A course that kept them well out of the reach and whispers of a Sharran curse slowly inching along the forest floor.

Carrying the tragedy of choices, and the loss her leadership sowed, it took emerging from her commune as the sole survivor to run back to the woods she knew. Her family's kindness was not as universal as she once believed. And all those adventurers had been right. The world was so much bigger, and so much scarier than she could have ever imagined.

The part of Sequoia that stands out to me the most is what she took from all the darkest parts of her story. Seeing all those wealthy people of the Gate walking past her begging for a cure to her brother's shadow sickness and purposefully looking away... It could have been more than enough to swear off compassion entirely. Instead, she insisted that there simply weren't enough people dedicated to stopping and tossing a coin. To be the hero she so desperately needed. (teehee cheeky little Astarion foil for ya)

Sequoia doesn't talk much, but she notices everything. Here are some things that she especially loves.

~ animals of all shapes and sizes. Each one is treated with honor and respect, even when hunting

~ children's stuffies. She can't explain it. No matter how heavy her pack is, whenever she finds one abandoned by its owner and left to the elements, she can't help but dusting it off and making space beside her bedroll. Some say she fled a Harpy nest with one strapped to her hip.

Celeste Map Reviews #24

GLORIOUS DAY! THE LAST OF 2024 (I am writing this as the clock ticks over into 2025). FOURTEEN, YES, FOURTEEN MAPS ALL PART OF THE SCD SUPER FINALE MARATHON! I might tone down the yapping a tad for the sake of getting through all these so HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

FIRST! - Moonlight Daydream by Sapphire_Xer0!! - The Marathon begins here! Sophie cooked up an expert map featuring dream blocks and puffers, and it was a ton of fun! Every room was a blast, I liked the progression of techniques (like the dream hyper fish bhop, and the fish ultra) and the berry was a nice gimmick touch! The decoration is stellar and quite SC-core, and the music was a great cherry to top the fishcake! Overall, I've been liking puffers a lot more recently......, 9.7/10!!

SECOND! - Starlight, Starbright by geb! - Next up we have an adv-exp effort from geb! Very clearly a reference to SC advanced's Satellite, I had a really fun time with this one! The wallbounce and spring gameplay just felt really funky and fun to do, helped by the top notch music. The visuals are pretty good and faithful to Satellite, and I especially liked the quirky room with 2 berries in it! Overall, Hexa trivia fact! Satellite used to be the map I remembered the least from SC advanced, maybe other than The Correlation... 9/10!!

THIRD! - Midlight by yurt7x!! - Here we've got an easier map all about the purple, um burst bubbles? Y'know, the ones from Red Giant? This map is quite the jauntful one (wow this word has settled into my vocabulary with no effort), just featuring a lot of wounces and waves and stuff and some cool bubble cancels too! It was.. just a fun time! Music and deco were a good fit too! Overall, maybe I should try yurt's jauntest map too... 9/10!!

FOURTH! - Overgrown Factory by xolimono! - The peak keeps on coming, almost like it's being produced at a factory! Not this one tho probably, this place is abandoned and overgrown by nature after all! The Overgrown City inspiration is clear, and the Desecration exploding boxes on zipper tracks are a cool entity to play around! The rooms were fun, and I liked the wavedash setup boost in the final room! I'd like to see how this gameplay style would do for longer rooms focused on the speedrun aspect of the connected zippers.... Overall, yes i still don't know what the desecration entities are actually called, 8.6/10!!!

FIFTH! - Sequoia by grog398!! - Here we have a solidly sc gm map (prolly would've ended up in red) based on FotA and Temporal Tower! The TT routing is on show from the start, along with the badelines (that don't kill when you're close to bino, though it confused the hell outta me the first time lmao), and of course we'll have to clear our way with the exploding crystals. The first room was pretty fun to route, the second room was REALLY hard to route, but I'm proud of myself for doing it without help, and the final room was easier to route, but had some cool moves! The heart room was a cool callback to TT's final room, hope it's silver friendly! The visuals have an interesting vibe and the music was pretty good! Overall, 2023 Hexalia would've definitely backed out the clear video for this one! 8.4/10!

SIXTH! - IchiNiSan by Appels!! - A very interesting vibes map! First off, I LOVE the outdoorsy vibe to the visuals, and now I wanna play more maps with this fresh air style! I also like the general color palette and tileset used here, quite pretty! The gameplay revolves around vertical screenwrap and room-wide crumble blocks! The progression is very fun, having 1, then 2, then 3 crumbles. I liked the in-room berries, definitely great to see with their rarity! Yeah, the bubbles and routing also add to the overall cool gameplay structure. Overall, I will code a crumble block that doesn't do the annoying insta-crumble sometimes, 8.9/10!!!

SEVENTH! - Far Flung Moon by Banana23!! - Another banger from the mapper to begin the SCD posting! This one has clear visual ties to Booster in Orbit, and the infamous bubble snakes are a feature here! This map is tech focused, lots of waves, supers, wounces and reverses are just good fun to breeze through as always! I loved the minimal decoration style and the general dark night/space vibe to it. The berries were pretty fun too! Overall, I just really like this map! 9.2/10!!

EIGHTH!! - Scrapyard by butcherberries!! - This map is quite different from all the others! Featuring a monochromatic (or is it grayscale?) Major-Malfunction-y visual experience which I quite appreciate the unique-ness off! The dead-looking trees and all the scrapheaps add to the immersion! The gameplay is interesting too, with gray bubbles and desecration exploders making up some pretty mind-boggling routing/exploring gameplay! Even the bino placements are weird, just like this whole map really, but it was a cool time! Overall, insert joke about the Scrapyard from btd6, 8.5/10!!

NINTH! - Through Time Unphased by MorphedCat!! - Coming in for number nine, this map is also really interesting! The difficulty is all over the place, from techless-ish intermediate, to sc cracked speedchains, all is encompassed by a pretty neat mini-story which I think is a really nice touch! But of course the highlight for me was the backtrack to reach the heart! It really cemented the experience for me! The visual style is very distinct with it's all-over-the-place approach, and I liked the music! Overall, kinda World Abyss-y with those touch switches...cool...9.2/10!!!

TENTH! - Slider Sanctuary by Soloiini!!! - And from some pretty complex maps we cool down with a fun beginner map! I loved the conveyor belt gimmick combined with the moving circle hazards! There were some cool movement ideas in there and all was very fun to jaunt through! I also appreciate the vanilla music in this one, that and the simpler deco feel quite sc-ish!! Overall, :thumbeline:, 8.8/10!!

ELEVENTH! - Rain Season by Tear_!! - More peak puffering perchance? YES!! This high expert map uses double dash, jump crystals, push blocks and fish and creates a super fun map out of them! Lots of cool setups and fish tech, along with fun mini-routing. The visuals are pretty good here, and I like the rain aesthetic, and the music was great! Call me a fan of the atmospheric start to the map with the move block too! Overall, HELL YEAH I AM A REFORMED PUFFERFISH FAN! 9.1/10

TWELFTH! - Skysailing by fonda1515!! - OH GOD YESSSS FONDA MAPPING I'M GONNA MELT IT'S SOOOOO GOOOOOOD! This map is just raw fun, simples. I almost got sad when it seemed like room 3 would be the end, but there was another room and a berry waiting for me! The jelly setups and red bubble moves were a shitton of fun, and I liked the wall/dream grab progression later on! The music also just added to the airborne jaunty vibe, so yeah, I absolutely had a blast! Overall, hmmm, red bubbles are fun... I can use this.... 10/10!!

THIRTEENTH! - Air A Danser by CoolBread! - This map which I didn't play straight away (sorry!) is allll about jumpthrough jumps! I'm quite the jumpthrough jump hater usually but this map was really good! The easier difficulty kept things from being annoying, and I liked the progression of adding neutrals in too! The gameplay is built around the main tech quite well too! I also liked the gimmick berries at the end! And the music and deco were great too! Overall, not so unlucky thirteen I think! 9/10!!

FOURTEENTH! - False Dawn by ABuffZucchini! - To END the marathon, we end on the vegetable! This map was intended to be uncomfortable to play, and I'd say it delivers! It's high expert, and focuses on tech and dream blocks, usually a more jaunty mechanic palette, but here there are plenty of spinners placed to add that uncomf in! I like the dark, unsettling vibe, and the rooms still had some neat moves to them! Overall, True Dusk, 8.5/10!!

SURPISE MOTHERFUCKERS! FIFTEENTH! - Penguin Park by Elysia Vesper! - A quick fifteenth map I picked up for fun! And I even fcg'ed it! This chilly atmosphere houses easy jumps and bubble gameplay, with some wallbounces! It was super fun to play as a map, with 6 varied berries, a fun world full of friendly penguins with some things to say, and a pleasant track! The difficulty curve is very smooth, and it's just satisfying to nail quick turnarounds and bubble sequences! I especially liked the open festival area, just adds even more charm! As for the fcg (or fcs actually), It didn't take that long, map is pretty consistent. Though of course I managed to die in final room somehow lol. Overall, gl on umm, epsilon? whichever room it is i'm sure you'll enjoy it cheepling :trollshiro:, 9.8/10

Singapore's crypto ambitions shaken by FTX collapse

There was a time when it seemed as though Singapore would become a global centre for cryptocurrency.

Authorities had signalled an early interest in harnessing blockchain technology. That, coupled with the city state’s favourable business environment, attracted digital asset companies and a burgeoning community of investors.

In 2021, investment in the industry in Singapore increased tenfold compared to the previous year to $1.48bn (£1.2bn), according to KPMG, making up nearly half the Asia Pacific total for the year.

2022 could not have been more different.

Crypto assets and companies – many with links to Singapore – have imploded, causing reverberations and sparking losses around the world.

First a popular token called Terra Luna collapsed, causing its sister token TerraUSD, which was largely stable, to plummet.

A few months later, Singapore-based crypto hedge fund Three Arrows filed for bankruptcy, taking down crypto exchange Voyager Digital with it. In August, crypto lender Hodlnaut became the next in a growing string of casualties.

It is thought that the closures of key market players this year has wiped out $1.5 trillion in crypto market capitalisation.

Then in November, billions were lost within a matter of days, when US crypto exchange FTX spectacularly collapsed because of a crippling liquidity crunch. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried has since been charged by US authorities with “one of the biggest financial frauds in US history”.

For Singapore, the FTX collapse was particularly shocking. Its state investment fund Temasek had invested in the exchange, pumping in $275m over several months.

Temasek says it will write down the money, and is conducting an internal review into the investment.

The fund is worth more than $295bn and so the FTX investment makes up a small percentage of its public wealth portfolio.

But Singapore’s deputy prime minister, who is also finance minister, told parliament the loss had caused reputational damage.

“The fact that other leading global institutional investors like BlackRock and Sequoia Capital also invested in FTX does not mitigate this,” Lawrence Wong said.

Tail investors were hurt too, and many believe the Singaporean authorities should have done more.

Nicole Yap, 26, says she didn’t flinch about investing in the exchange because so many big companies were backing it. She has lost roughly $150,000 (£122,000), but feels the onus should not be on the user entirely.

“You need the regulation – the government or the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) – to say, ‘these companies are good, we’ve seen their books,'” Ms Yap says.

“Just because there is a lot of scam in crypto, doesn’t mean crypto is a scam. But users don’t have a platform to find out about these things. We only have social media and crypto influencers.”

Carol Lim started investing in cryptocurrency during the pandemic. The 52-year-old was hoping to make enough money to retire in the next few years.

“I invested with Hodlenaut because the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) endorsed it. In today’s value, I lost about $55,000. I can only hope to get some of it back.”

Hodlenaut was one of a handful of firms that was granted in-principle approval to provide digital payment services by Singapore’s central bank. The licence approval was rescinded when the lender was forced to stop withdrawals because of market conditions.

“The core of the problem is that there is some misunderstanding amongst regulators. They want to attract businesses to their jurisdiction, but you need to regulate in such a way that consumers are safe,” says Michael Gronager, CEO and co-founder of blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.

Mr Gronager says that because consumers are so global these days, regulators need to decide whether to implement laws on the company – for example, giving them a licence to operate in the country – or to restrict trading access to retail investors.

FTX did not have a licence to operate in Singapore. However, MAS has said it is not possible to prevent local users from accessing overseas service providers.

“We will see fraud, fast money in the industry – that’s no surprise. We see it in the internet, we see it in all sorts of traditional industries,” Mr Gronager says.

Singapore had started introducing new measures even before the FTX saga, warning that the technology can be volatile and speculative. It banned crypto advertising earlier this year and is investigating a number of outlets present in the island nation.

Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, left Singapore last year after it was put on an investor alert list for soliciting customers without the requisite licence, and offering Singapore dollar trades.

The crackdown has attracted criticism from industry players as a result, for instance from Brian Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of US-based crypto exchange platform Coinbase.

“Singapore wants to be a hub for Web3 (a vision of the next iteration of the internet that uses blockchains and cryptocurrencies), and then simultaneously says: ‘Oh, we’re not really going to allow retail trading or self-hosted wallets to be available,” he said at the Singapore FinTech Festival in November.

“Those two things are incompatible in my mind,” he added.

Singapore’s government says it remains enthusiastic about crypto and still wants to become a virtual-asset hub, with a focus on the business and administrative side of blockchain technology.

It has vowed to contain risks, by proposing knowledge tests for retail investors before being allowed to trade, and has acknowledged this could mean retail-focused companies may move to other jurisdictions.

“Cryptocurrency platforms can collapse due to fraud, unsustainable business models, or excessive risk taking. FTX is not the first cryptocurrency platform to collapse, nor will it be the last,” Mr Wong said.

“Those who trade in cryptocurrencies must be prepared to lose all their value. No amount of regulation can remove this risk.”

Payments infrastructure platform YAP collects Series A cheque

M2P Solutions Pvt. Ltd, which operates payments-focussed application programming interface (API) startup YAP has raised $4.5 million (Rs 34.62 crore at current exchange rates), barely two months after its angel funding round.

The Series A funding round has been led by Singapore-based Beenext. Others that took part in the round include Vikram Chachra-led 8i Ventures Fund, the DMI Group via its investment vehicle Sparkle Fund, and Better Capital.

Angel investors such as Alok Mittal, Bharatpe chief executive officer Ashneer Grover and existing investors Amrish Rau, Jitendra Gupta, and Abhishant Pant also participated, YAP said in a statement.

The Chennai-based company will use the funds to strengthen its team, build its technological infrastructure and API product and service portfolio.

In February, YAP raised Rs 10 crore (around $1.4 million) in an angel funding round led by Rau, with participation from Pant, Gupta, Chachra in his personal capacity, and Kunal Shah. At the time, the payments infrastructure company said it would use the capital for growth expansion and developing banking-focussed products.

YAP, incorporated in 2014, was founded by Madhusudhanan R, Muthukumar A and Prabhu R. The firm says its API platform is used by its customers to open new financial accounts, issues and process payments and co-create new products.

The company says its API bundle includes financial products such as bank accounts, payments products and newer methods such as QR and unified payment interface (UPI).

“I have been actively looking for a fintech firm in India for the past 12 months and was happy when I met Madhu, Muthu and Prabhu and heard about their very unique founding journey,” Quaquebeke said.

Deals in the fintech segment

The fintech segment has seen heavy investor activity for startups across all stages. Startups in verticals such as wealth management and neo-banking have pocketed large cheques. Companies in the space are seeking to apply new technologies to traditional financial products and bring more people into formal financial structures.

Earlier this month, VCCircle exclusively reported that mobile wallet firm ZipCash had raised its Series A funding round from a mix of domestic and foreign backers. Also this month, Juspay Technologies Pvt. Ltd, a payments technology firm, raised $21.6 million in its Series B funding round led by a Swedish investor.

Entellus Business Solutions Pvt. Ltd, which operates enterprise-focussed neo-banking platform Nupay, raised funding in a seed investment round led by startup incubator and accelerator Venture Catalysts in January.

That month, EpiFi Technologies Pvt. Ltd raised $13.2 million (around Rs 93.5 crore) in seed funding at a valuation of around $50 million from investors such as Sequoia Capital, Ribbit Capital and Hillhouse Capital.

Mainly in the aspects of going through there different life stages.

Mood bored for up coming Art series

So I’m planning a multiple part challengers fic based on the show “Normal People” it’s gonna be a friends to lovers fic.

I don’t think Tashi will be involved just because it will throw everything off but if you guys have any ideas feel to sent your thoughts my way.

I will start writing hopefully towards the end of the month unless my planes change.
