If “Sessrin was always intended by Rumiko” like the shippers claim and we should “respect her original vision” then they should respect that Sesshomaru was actually originally meant to be gay/queer. He was originally conceived as Inuyasha’s sister but like with Jakotsu Rumiko felt uncomfortable having Inuyasha beat up women so she decided to turn him into a queer-coded male instead. This is why in the very early chapters Sesshomaru looks incredibly feminine with long eyelashes and makeup and everything, also since Sessrins are always bleating about “historical accuracy” did you know Sesshomaru’s obi on his furisode is tied the same way it would be for prostitutes or queer men who have a samurai lover? How’s that for “historical accuracy” raisins.

Anyways Sesshomaru is a gay man as per according to Rumiko’s original canon, checkmate homophobic Sessrinners! 💅 it’s only right to respect her “intended vision” after all.

All fantastic and irrefutable points. SR shippers only want historical accuracy (even if it’s not accurate at all) and to respect Takahashi’s vision (even if SR wasn’t her vision) when it suits them.

A couple of points I’d like to add is

Much as Sesshomaru was originally supposed to be a woman, Rin was also supposed to be a boy. We all know the ship likely wouldn’t exist if the roles had been reversed. This group of shippers is made entirely of ignorant teenage girls and creepy older women who just wanna project so badly, but are too misogynistic to enjoy a pairing of Sesshomaru with a woman who has an established personality.

We’re living in a post “every author/singer/actor who made my childhood is problematic” world so death of the author is more prevalent than ever. Takahashi is certainly no exception. TL;DR I don’t have to respect shit lmao especially if your vision for your final work involves child brides. I’m gonna take the characters and headcanons I like, make off with them and there’s not thing one anybody can do to stop me 😌

i just like it!!! maybe i should remove the diehard from my intro post i'm not into it as much as others here are

ok but no seriously- i just think it feels like a fairy tale, you know? the peasant orphan girl down on her luck who had a chance encounter with this immortal demon whose heart changed because of her, finding a place in the world, and then at some point in the future they fell in love and married, even though unfortunately misfortune lied beyond that. Inuyasha is the story of "A Feudal Fairy Tale" and that's just what it feels like to me, a fairy tale! something romantic that can't ever possibly happen in a modern, technological world, a romance of a world of demons and magic...

of course, i won't pretend that a big part for me is just the fact that they're Towa's and Setsuna's parents- Towa in particular being one of my favorite characters ever, i would've stanned her mom and the ship no matter who it was. i initially entered this fandom as a neutral who disliked it with a "whatever, if it's canon it's canon i'm not watching for sessrin anyways" who got more into it as i followed more sessrin accounts because of the extreme negativity in order to find pro-Yashahime stuff, it just grew on me...

i personally don't think it's the greatest ship ever written or anything like that, and i'm pretty starved for canon content as a shipper, but art and fanfics get me going by. i'll admit, it might be better to ask other shippers why they like it more, 'cuz there's some of us here who could probably write entire essays!

but that's why to me it's great. a fairy tale romance from a fantastic time, combined with being the mom of the twins. i hope that explains my personal taste, anyways!

i'm gonna be real with you i was initially neutral on this ship leaning on negative but holy fuck the tumblr community was so full of vitrol it forced me to undergo the cardinal sin of learning how to use twitter and i use that twitter more. and that still sucked so i kind of just accepted i needed to follow sessrin twitters to actually be able to enjoy this show that genuinely means a lot to me

and then you know, tons of fanworks like fanfics and art because sessrin consistently has the best art in the fandom and i'm like "you know what fuck it i'm in even if yashahime makes this shit completely suck i got fanfics so it's fine"

i guess personally- i like how much of a fairy tale it feels like? and, you know, A Feudal Fairy Tale and all. poor mute orphan girl lives in a village that literally beat her for taking a fish after the traumatizing death of her family in front of her, then by chance encounter she meets an injured, immortal, powerful demon in the woods and then goes on fantastical adventures with him, and in the process transforms him from someone coldhearted and evil due to him learning compassion from their experiences, then marries him when she's older

it just feels like a fairy tale to me and i like it a lot

It was impossible to ignore the spoilers for the episode aired on Christmas, but as soon as I saw Rin in Sesshomaru's arms, it made me want to watch it even MORE! I cried when Setsuna called Towa "onee-chan" and they embraced, and I cried when Rin was freed from the curse and reunited with her husband. I even laughed/cried when Jaken cried of joy. It was such a fantastic episode all around! Merry X-Mas and Happy New Year to my fellow SessRin fans!

Is it bad that I still love the OG anime even if Shitrise "recontextualizes" Sesshomaru and Rin's relationship?

While I have read a good bit into the manga, the anime is what I most identify with. I still don't think YH is even truly canon to the OG anime, given it's retcons from the OG and its timeline. Even in the anime, Sess and Rin's interactions never came off as romantic to me, so can their interactions from even the OG really be interpreted as romantic?

Not at all! It's still my favorite anime, personally, and I think it always will be. I mean, the Tragic Love Song of Destiny two-parter is my favorite episode, and that's an anime-only story. I refuse to let a non-canon sequel ruin the show for me, which is a large part of why I'm not watching any more Yashahime or seeking out any news about it.

Do I view Sesshōmaru and Rin's relationship in the original series as romantic or pre-romantic, knowing what Sunrise made them do in the sequel? No, because it absolutely isn't. Do I feel more uncomfortable watching their interactions in the original, thinking about Satō & Sumisawa's intentions? Yeah, sadly. Does that ruin the music, the animation, the voice acting, the pure nostalgic joy I feel whenever I rewatch the show? No, not at all.

The original series is its own separate canon. It had no pedophilic ships or moments. SessRin was not canon in it. Don't let Yashahime ruin a fantastic show for you!

(Also, definitely read the manga, because as great as the anime is, the manga's even better. Literally the only thing the anime has on it is Wada Kaoru's music.)

I still hate what this show did to the original characters. Like a lot. It's something I'll never get over. We got absolutely no resolution to what happened to them.

But if I look at this show from the perspective of the three girls, was it a good show? It was decent. They got the character arcs and resolution that they needed.

This whole show was based on the nostalgia of the original. It was catered to the Sessrin shippers, which is fantastic, but I am not even sure they did that super well either.

If they would have tweaked a lot of things in regards to InuKag's disappearance, I think I would have enjoyed this so much more. You can't make the main couple disappear and essentially make all the other characters not really care and expect that to be okay.

It’s interesting to me that in addition to attempts (by a minority) to change the series start date of 1996 to the 2000s (more on that in another post), people are now also trying to say that Inuyasha is not 200+ years old. And the main reason why I see them doing it is because it’s a popular response now to “Well, what about Inuyasha being shipped with Kagome, a 15 year old?” So now Inuyasha can’t be 200+ anymore, he has to be 15 in human years, even though he was always around 15 mentally despite being 200+ years old (that’s never changed). Technically, that’s not even right. Inuyasha was pinned to a tree for 50 years so he’d be at least 75.

Instead of just pointing out that Inuyasha and Kagome are the same age mentally, now people on all sides of the issue are just deciding that facts are what they make them so they can support their position. I’m not even just talking about Inuyasha’s age because his age was never confirmed in the original manga or show that I know of. I’ve just come across posts and other comments on tumblr right now that state no one shipped Inuyasha with Kagome while she was 15 and that she was only shipped with Inuyasha post her return to the feudal era. I nearly had a stroke. Really, my brain stopped working for like five seconds. Is that really how far people are willing to go?

I don’t personally know where the information about Inuyasha’s age came from before, just like I don’t know why it’s assumed Sesshomaru is 900+ (personally I doubt that he is). But it has been the long-held belief that Inuyasha was around 150 when he met Kikyo and then he spent 50 years pinned to the tree making him about 200 years old. Mentally and physically, he looks to be 15 just like it’s said that Sesshomaru is 19 years old and Koga has said to have the appearance of a 15 year old or an 18 year old (depending on where you’re getting the information).

There is nothing that I know of in the manga or anime that states he’s 200+ years old, just that we know he’s been pinned to the Sacred Tree for 50 years making him at least 50+ years old. It has been vaguely implied that he’s much older. Inuyasha said his mother died a long time and that could just mean it feels like a long time ago if she died while he was still a young child, or Inuyasha aged more slowly than humans and so by the time his mother died he was still young. Considering that after 50 years he looks the same as he did when he was pinned to the tree, I’m more inclined to believe he’s a slow ager and it really has been a long time. There’s also the arc in the anime with all the commentary on Sesshomaru being miffed about how Inuyasha could not help with the fight against the panther demons because he had been pinned to the tree, along with their initial battle over Tessaiga, all vaguely suggesting that Inuyasha and Sesshomaru have some longer history than a few years. Because that’s all it would have been if Inuyasha were only 15 years old before being pinned to the tree; we see him running in a forest as a child, presumably when his mother died, and he’s alone. He was possibly 8, 9, maybe 10 (he’s not a tall guy). But, we could always throw that out and forget the panther arc because that was filler. There’s always the issue of people talking about Toga as though it has been a long time since he was alive, and so it certainly feels like it could have been centuries since he was alive just like it feels as though Inuyasha and Sesshomaru have a long history with each other. But that’s still not confirmation obviously.

So, with seemingly no confirmation in the manga or anime, it must have been left to Rumiko or someone to suggest ages for Inuyasha and Sesshomaru. They had to come from somewhere and had some basis. I don’t personally know if Rumiko herself came up with those numbers. Honestly, even if she did, it’s kind of like a Dumbledore being gay situation all over. Just because J.K. Rowling decided Dumbledore could be gay doesn’t excuse it not being explicitly stated or shown. Prior to the Fantastic Beasts series, it was just implied as a possibility at best. Now, with Yashahime, they are going with Inuyasha being 200+ years old and have confirmed that in the actual show. Whether you want to accept the show as canon or not, it was previously held that he was 200+ years old and now we have evidence in the show’s sequel that he is, in fact, that old. It’s not a retcon per se if they confirm what we already believed. If Rumiko stated that Sesshomaru was 900+ and then Sunrise decides upon an age for Sesshomaru that’s younger than that, we could say that’s a retcon. Technically, none of their ages aside from Kagome are confirmed in the show, but you could still say it’s a retcon I guess if it goes against something the creator stated (even if the creator didn’t put it in the show, which I have a problem with personally).

I find it very transparent to shift things on a dime so that you can bolster your argument. Take for example, my personal theory that Sesshomaru is closer to 500 years old than 900 or 1,000. I think we’ve been given some information that supports this theory and it would make sense to me personally. Does that change anything with the Sesshomaru/Rin dynamic? No, not really. So my saying I think he’s actually 500 instead of 900 can’t be used to support an argument that ‘well, Sesshomaru’s actually younger in demon years, and well, 500 years old isn’t as old as 1,000 in demon years’. That would be a stupid argument. We already know from Inuyasha that at 200 years old you at least have the maturity of someone around the age of 15. Sesshomaru is older than Inuyasha, therefore, he has to have the maturity of someone older than 15. Therefore, anyone who has a problem with the sessrin pairing is still going to have a problem. But apparently it’s popular now to say that Inuyasha was only ever 15 (as in 15 human years) and to also state that he grows at the rate of humans (even though we don’t actually know that for a fact). All to avoid having to discuss their age gap. There is an age gap. If it wasn’t confirmed before, HNY has confirmed it now.

Technically, the InuKag age gap is not the same as the sessrin age gap because while Inuyasha may be 200+ years old, he’s mentally 15 and Kagome is also 15. So anyone who has a problem with sessrin because Rin was still a child when they met doesn’t need to try and change Inuyasha’s age. If we’re talking about mental age and maturity of the characters upon their meeting, these two age gaps are apples and oranges.

First. People don't TURN gay, it's already their NATURE. It's a matter of understanding to be gay not turning gay.

Second. Sexuality is not always a black and white concept. There are shades of grey in the middle. Just because a guy has kids with a woman or in our case with a very young girl who just hit puberty, doesn't mean he's 100% straight. Gay men can still have sex with girls or the guy in question could be bisexual, asexual, etc. In Sesshomaru's case we can't really say given how him having kids was stated in official interviews to be more like an experiment out of curiosity. As a matter of facts, Sessrin are never portrayed as a romantic couple in both OG (still raisins keep using scenes of 8yo Rin and Sesshomaru as romantic build) and Yashahime as well, their dynamic never changed: it's all about him barely acknowledging Rin's existence and solely talking to her to give orders. There is litterally 0 romance or lust in their scenes, just Rin repeating "Sesshomaru-sama!" like a broken record and him being 😐. Unlike Inukag and MirSan who are shown as actual romantic couples and families. Even official arts don't favor Sessrin, there isn't a single picture where they're portrayed as a loving couple/family. It was also stated that after the events of S2 Sesshomaru wouldn't stay with Rin and the twins, he'd merely show up in situations of extreme danger and then disappear again. So given how the twins will also be away on their adventures with Moroha, Rin will most likely go back living with Kaede.

Third. Rin has litterally 0 authority over Sesshomaru. Where did this idiotic Sessrinner ever take the impression that she did? If nothing, it's the exact contrary. Sesshomaru always gave orders to Rin and she simply obeyed, she never even questioned his rules. That's their only dynamic: Sesshomaru orders, Rin blindly obeys. Period. So if Sesshomaru was gay, bi, asexual or whatever, she's sure as hell in no position to not ALLOW that. She's a nobody and Sesshomaru doesn't listen to anyone. Name a single time when he obeyed Rin... Exactly, there is no such time 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly this is a fantastic breakdown and I don’t really have much more to add, other than it’s amusing how obviously homophobic the sessrinnies are. They act like the very existence of homosexuality is this monster under the bed waiting to get them.
