I finished this cute Vogue 9268 dress today, and I'll wear it to work tomorrow. Instead of turning up the sleeves and hem, I did a little lettuce edge narrow hem on my serger. The pattern was easy; the fabric gave me fits, which is a drawback to rescuing old fabrics from someone's stash. Not knowing its full fiber content or age means the fabric can surprise you. We were honored to get a visit yesterday by @thomas_von_nordheim and @devolkgosche .... #Repost @thomas_von_nordheim ・・・ Being in the heart of the Manhattens garment district, me and @devolkgosche visited the nearby factory of "Tom's Sons" @internationalpleating in West 36th street, who are THE pleaters to the trade and have been involved in the fabric and apparel industry for over 150 years. We were given a little tour around the factory on the 4th floor and were delighted to meet George's father Leon Kalajian, who, probably in his 80s, is still hand folding fabric between cardboard to be pleated. I felt humbled to be presented with a copy of George's recently published book on pleating, a little treasure for those interested in this niche craft of fashion art. The book called "Pleating-fundamentals of fashion design" is educational on the technical and historical aspects of pleating. It also has a short chapter on the fascinating familiy history, starting with Krikor Tutounjian in Turkey who produced silk from scratch including breeding silkworms on mulberry trees through to weaving. Although I have a nice large cutting table, this slippery 60" wide knit that has to be cut in one layer was trying to run away from me.
