The Veronica Shift Dress

Veronica No. 3063 from Seamwork Magazine

The Veronica is a dolman shift dress with elastic in the back waistband and an invisible zipper. As always, Seamwork’s instructions were well-written. I made the dress in a poly-cotton blend fabric in a fun cherry print. It’s the perfect late summer into early fall dress. 

I only had one issue with construction: inserting the elastic into the back casing and then edge stitching. I can’t use elastics with latex, which means my choices are often limited. The only non-latex, 1 ½”  elastic I could find locally was a non-roll type that was really too stiff for the application. It was difficult to pull through, and I was never able to edge stitch successfully without catching the elastic. If I make the dress again, I’ll use 1-inch elastic. I’m certain it would work just fine.

The pattern also called for a facing at the neckline, but I dislike facings. Instead, I used the same biased binding that I used on the sleeve edges. I made my own binding out of the same fabric as the dress. 

I stitched all the seams (except the seam below the zipper) on my serger with a 4-thread overlock. I inserted the invisible zipper and did the edge stitching and top stitching on the sewing machine.  

Other than an adjustment at the hip, I didn’t make any alterations to the pattern. I like that multi-size patterns make getting a nice fit easier. 

Overall, this was a nice make, and I may make another one out of a more cool-weather friendly fabric to wear in late fall and early winter.
