sorry for taking so long to get to this haha, i had to stare at my playlist for a bit because my music taste is a bit all over the place nowadays (and also, a lot of jpop orz)

well there's always the classic cpop singer rec, Zhou Shen who's particularly fun to recommend to international listeners cuz like. you don't need to know what he's saying to realise his voice is goddamn incredible. also, if you watch cdramas at all you've probably heard him at least once because he is somehow in every cdrama ost (may i interest you in my translation of the three body problem theme song he did). everyone's first Zhou Shen song is big fish but i'd also shout out mirage, my favourite on (the first half of) his new album which is a much more electronic kinda sound than what he usually does

if you're into hip hop at all there's ice paper, the top artist in my spotify wrapped last year (somehow). i tend to enjoy music that sounds weird as hell and.. yeah on naihe bridge is my go to example of 'yknow rap music can sound real wild sometimes'. also, all the music that Fanka made for the show Link Click, particularly the season 1 ed

on the topic of music that sounds weird as hell, floruitshow's album is all bangers (set me free (translation here!) is my personal top rec it really sounds so unique)

finally, lightning round of artists off the top of my head: Mayday is kind of a chinese rock music all time classic. Mao Buyi is a personal fav but his sound is more... quiet low key quarter life crisis music so idk if that's your thing lol. Liu Yuning is a singer i was deeply obsessed with a few years back (also another guy who's somehow on every cdrama ost), his stuff tends towards more pop (especially the ost songs) but he's part of a rock band and some of his original music does reflect that

also, unrelated to music recs exactly but if you want a quick way to find cpop songs/singers to fall into a hole about you enjoy, i highly recommend looking up music variety shows since a lot of them are english subbed on youtube! Singer is a classic and Singing with Legends is a personal fav but that's probably a separate post lol

Shan yichun leading the pack for gen z mando pop singers for real and by a FAR margin. she debuted 3 years ago and has been on the state chinese new years gala TWICE so obv they also see her favourably and this year she had the best performance of the whole night imo and it was a duet with only two ppl on stage which is so rare bc they love to pack the stage with a mix and match of performers and a ton of background dancers. So comforting to know that u can be the most popular actress in china and still be put with 5 other ppl in this gala when everywhere else would give u a 10 min solo set despite not being a singer and skills and merit can still earn u a spot spot for basically a solo performance. But u do have to have shan yichun’s voice

Although their memories were hazy, those enduring trials across multiple lifetimes weren't the first chapters of their shared affection. As they unlocked the mystery and decided to uncover events from 30,000 years ago, we glimpsed the origins of their love story.

It was Xiang Yun who had fallen for him at their very first encounter. She as Chang Hai, marked by strength, wit, and playful cunning, was truly admirable. Her pursuit of Chu Kong was a stark contrast to their second lifetime, where their roles reversed. Her relentless efforts to win his heart bore fruit, and together they vowed to grow old as inseparable partners.

Yet, the sad reality was that external calamity cut their journey short. To protect him, she made the ultimate sacrifice, though Chu Kong's protective spell saved her and transformed her into a cloud, rather than obliterating her. Despite betraying her vow, her unwavering love drove her actions, demonstrating her willingness to shield him at any cost. Her sole desire was for Chu Kong's continued existence, even if they couldn't be together.

Their shared memory loss was tragic, yet their hearts remained steadfast. Thus, when they crossed paths once more, 30,000 years later, an innate connection reassured them that they had always been destined for each other.

What I love the most about their relationship is the way they always understand each other and make sure to communicate everything. Even though sometimes Xiang Yun always takes a step forward, since Chu Kong knows her so well, he will be there to accompany her. This kind of trope is not something new, but it's so fresh to watch their characters development every time they pass through their trials. Each time, it made them more mature, more caring, and more understanding, and this also made their love for each other even stronger.

They are really the epitome of I am ready to sacrifice myself as long as the one I love lives well. Whether it's 30.000 years ago, in the mortal world, or after they reunite again, they keep protecting each other at the cost of their own lives.

Watching Chu Kong send his last soul to prevent Xiang Yun from perishing is so sad. He couldn't keep his promise to be with her forever, but he did this because what was important to him was keeping his beloved one alive.

The last line, when he asked her to look around the world so they could meet again, became a sliver of hope for Xiang Yun that one day he really would come back to her side. Whether it's in the past or future, whether it's another lifetime or another timeline, she makes sure to find him again.

If we connected it with the novel ending, we could imagine Xiang Yun going back and forth to find him, collecting every sliver of his soul, and finally being able to meet the one that she has been waiting for. The one who promised her a forever life together.

Because it’s currently playing right now and has been on repeat a lot recently... All In by Yixing with Victor Ma and Shan Yichun. Yixing’s voice and pop ballads are such a beautiful combination. Victor and Yichun sound lovely as well. It is sooo good. Yixing co-wrote the song, too... so, you know.

Kyungsoo’s I’m Gonna Love You with Wonsetin is brilliant. I hope he/they perform it live someday. This one might be a cheat, though, because I feel I love it largely due to Kyungsoo’s R&B sound, rather than the song being a collaboration. But, I love it nonetheless, and it’s a collaboration... so, it’s making the list.

I know their first collaboration is extremly popular, but Chanyeol and Punch’s newer song, Go Away Go Away from Romantic Doctor II is one of my favorite original soundtracks of all time (which says a lot, because Jongdae primarily occupies that list.)
