this behemoth of a comic is finally done - and just in time for zoros birthday huehue. initially i wanted to make a zolu introspective from an outsider POV and was like you know who would have really funny input on this … mihawk. and then it spiraled into seven pages of mishanks sitting and talking. i thought it would be funny if mishanks ended up doing self imposed couples therapy the day mihawk brought luffys bounty bc well. its kind of hilarious to think abt mihawk realizing shanks was onto something all those years ago after he meets zoro and luffy. like sure this new generation is batshit crazy but my god are they cooking. anyways. cheers. get some kids

Splinter is full of ghosts

(specifically the onryo borne from the murdered Yoshi Hamato and Tang Shen [because oroku saki a bitch])

[ redacted ] and Tang Shen’s ghost gained control and guided Splinter to raise the boys in love and not [ redacted ] to [ redacted ] in [ redacted ]

Splinter was just a regular little rat... who on his 1000th birthday witnessed the death of his friend/unwitting master and his wife, and thus transformed into a wrathful kyūso (minus the kitten eating) and chased Shredder until losing his trail in New York

Shredder’s fuck around and Splinter’s rampaging as the find out caused the tengu to repo some of the mysticism from ninjutsu

now all the (remaining) ninja clans debuffed and mad about it

The tengu bestowed the ninja the ability to summon shit (kuchiyose), enact mystical effects upon people and objects (kuji kiri), going invisible, minor flight (actually just qinggong/light body technique), and manipulation of the 5 elements, and creating doubles (bunshin)

but again, Shredder fucked up so now ninja can like barely control anything bigger than a lit torch or a 16 oz bottle of liquid and that’s if you got in enough hours to do even that

I mentioned elsewhere but for me in any AU I make, Venus is a cultivator and the more I think about it the more I will die on this hill, not only does it fit better than her being a “shaman” or “shinobi” it’s sick as fuck

Jennika’s origin was pretty fkkn metal, she still falls in with the Foot, gets shanked, Leo gives blood-- bam, turtle time

Jennika goes to hang with Venus in China and get a better understanding of her new turtle body

Keno’s here, still tried to infiltrate the Foot (with Jennika) but bugged out when she couldn’t stay without being made (Jennika refused to leave womp)

teaches Leo some arnis techniques for Leo’s dual wielding; Donnie also just in case his bo is shattered... again. :)

Irma has made all the boys blush at least twice

Irma is also soap opera buddies with Splinter

they meet up at least twice a month to gab, gush, and groan over what’s currently going on in their stories, when Venus visits she also joins in, Irma also has a conversational grasp on Japanese and Venus’ regional dialect because of these visits

April has a full out shoujo manga romance with Chu Hsi

and he’s a hot dragon prince uhuhuhuhuhu

Irma is privy to all the steamy details

keeping Leo and Karai as character foils

both received scars from one another

now they just meet every so often to eat the greasiest fast food and unclench of an hour

Raph still gets his ass worked by Ninjara, folded like an omelette sat on a lawn chair

Vam Mi is also here, she’s fought first (because honestly she should’ve been either brought in earlier in the season or had a few more episodes because that shit coulda resolved better)

Venus is brought to NYC for this antagonist instead of Dragonlord escaping (and murdering her father figure forcing her to seek out his friend Splinter for aid)

Donnie doesn’t take the news of real vampires or real magic well

Donnie and Venus have a knock down drag out fight over it (because they’re 17 at this point and being li’l shits to each other about their respective fields of expertise)

“The nerds are fightingggggg!” cries Mikey, Leo and Raph don’t believe it so imagine their surprise when they get a demo in real time on how scary competent staff fighters are

Leo gets Splinter when one of Donnie’s missed strikes cracks the concrete

Splinter breaks them up like talking a walk in the park and it’d be comical if they both weren’t bleeding from the mouth and peppered with swelling contusions

Venus begins accepting Donnie when his tech prevents her from becoming a thrall of Vam-Mi

Donnie begins accepting Venus when she uses a massive amount of chi to manipulate gravity just before he becomes street pizza when Vam-Mi throws him off a bridge

they also combine skill sets to save Mikey so there’s that

Venus goes from calling Donnie, “Horatio (derogatory)” to “Horatio (affectionate)”

they now have a dumbass long-as-fuck handshake that’s unforgivably nerdy 

April is still a magic drawing-brought-to-life baby, Venus puts her in a painted scroll when she starts phasing in and out of existence (she and Chu Hsi have a great time in the scroll... while everyone is shitting bricks until Venus and her sect stabilize her and get her made real, Pinocchio style)

April’s grandmothers gifted Venus 2 pieces of jade jewelry, and her family’s recipe for sweet potato pudding respectively for saving April

the boss fight against Dragonlord is dope as fuckkkkk, Chu Hsi is being cool as fuck, fiddled with some concepts* that has Leo and Karai being a champion of Genbu, Raph for Byakko, Mikey for Suzaku, Chu Hsi’s retainer (a good dragon, wink wonk) steps in for Seiryu because Donnie and Venus are siphoning and redirecting an enormous amount and variety of mystical power

*i’m just pulling from fushigi yugi honestly

splinter, the boys, and venus (and others) mutating from mutagen laced toxic waste was a pure accident

Splinter was investigating a lead on Shredder’s movements concerning the Foot the same night an animal liberation sleeper cell ‘freed’ some animals from the back of a pet store (that was a front for black market domestic and exotic animal trafficking) that is also the same night a stolen truck driven by some corporate spies filled with a competitor’s chemical waste, which then collides with said liberation sleeper cell’s truck and... ooze happens

Leatherhead, the Mutanimals, Mondo, Mona Lisa, Slash also get mutated from the events of that night, either leading up to or following the aftermath

plus some others etc etc

Venus still washes down the gutter, gets rube goldberg pinballed onto a crate of plums where Chung I finds her and still gets named Mei and taken to live in China and eventually learns to cultivate

Tokka and Rahzar get made, and unmade ala TMNT II; the mutagen made them a little silly tho, April adopts Rahzar and passes him off as a low content wolfdog, Leatherhead takes in Tokka

April went through a couple of major changes so now she’s a journalist with a computer programming background who now does a podcast as an informal neighborhood news reporter with a segment for chatting with people from around the street

Mikey’s the most frequent guest and co-hosts sometimes; Donnie troubleshoots free of charge

Venus brings her province’s regional delicacies when she comes to visit, Splinter and Leo both get pu er tea cakes (she managed to get one the same age as him; Splinter is too old so she got the oldest she could find, Leo has so many tea pets and a nice yixing collection); Raph, Keno, and Casey fight over the pickles, meat jerkies, and chili oil; Mikey has an artillery of cool shirts and a lifetime supply of haw flakes, Donnie has a mountain of doodads with increasingly specific uses, April gets neat accessories and the occasional care package sent with Venus from her grandparents, uncles, and aunties; Irma gets neat frames and coats that never fail to get a “Where did you get that??”

Raph rides a Kawasaki Ninja because it’s funny

A lot of bodegas give Mikey free snacks because the bodega cats love him, and he’s also saved some from being run over or ripped apart by stray dogs or the few large angry raccoons

Donnie’s the only one of his brothers to wear both a top and bottom with shoes because once he figured out how to integrate a motherboard and miscellany wiring onto clothing... he’s been a walking computing menace ever since

Splinter does his best to enjoy his time with his sons (because as a kyūso, he knows the chances of outliving his precious sons is very high (ᴗ‿ᴗ✿)  ...give or take one of the many opponents and obstacles his sons take on takes him out first ( ◕ᴗ◕✿ ) )

Best of 2019: A Year in Review

2019 was a hard fucking year. It was long, and weird, and filled with bullshit. I usually like to keep it light and frothy, but I’m going to scrape off the foam and get real for a second. I have had a very difficult past couple of years, but this blog allowed me to stay connected to an activity I enjoyed. Writing to you all every month has been an anchor, a little beacon that’s lit the way while I’ve searched for my path in the dark. So if you read my blog this year, in any capacity, whether as a supportive friend, curious stranger, or schadenfreude seeking acquaintance, I want to thank you. It really means a lot to me that you are here. 

ANYWAY the best television of 2019 was also deeply personal, sometimes devastatingly so. I didn’t watch everything I should have, or meant to, and god knows I jumped a lot of ships when the waters started to get too choppy (Years and Years, I will come back to you one day). Of everything I watched this year (reminder there were 500+ original shows and I have only seen two episodes of Watchmen SORRY)  here is the very best: 

Fleabag Season 2 - Amazon Prime

The first season of Fleabag felt like jumping into ice water, a refreshing shock to the system. Season 2 felt like falling in love. There is not a lot to say about season 2 that has not been said already: the genius of the opening dinner scene, the hotness of the priest, the chicness of the jumpsuit. Uproariously funny, deeply confessional, wrenchingly painful - it was literally perfect.

Pen15 - Hulu

It’s not every day that someone makes a documentary of your own stupid life and then just puts it on a streaming service for EVERYONE to see. Maybe letting women make content was a mistake after all because if this is what seeing yourself truthfully represented in media feels like, I’m not sure I like it. Even this gif is a personal attack. 

Russian Doll - Netflix

A genre-bending exploration of trauma, humanity, and birthdays, Russian Doll was big, messy, and often imperfect - but then again so is life (and death). When all the pieces came together Russian Doll hit as hard as an air conditioner plummeting from the sixth story. It also provided 2019 with the perfect soundtrack in Harry Nilsson’s ‘Gotta Get Up’ and primed us all for a year of existential disappointment. Thanks Nat!

Love Island - ITV2

Because it’s the TRUTH, Maura. Look there are only two types of people in this world: those who have seen Love Island, and those who have not. If you are judging this entry, or raising your eyebrows, or thinking I have hit my head very hard (perhaps on a plummeting air conditioner), then you have simply not yet visited the island. I clocked 90+ hours in the villa this year,  and that alone deems it worthy of inclusion. “But Martha maybe you would have had time to watch Succession if you didn’t watch a reality show about sexy idiots” Maybe, but we’ll simply never know. Reminder- Love Island Winter premieres Jan 1st.

Veep- HBO

Probably the last time we will laugh about politics for a long...long...time. This show was never as good without Iannucci, but JLD consistently turned in one of the all time best performances ever, in a comedy or otherwise. Veep was as sharp and funny as a shank in the gut, and the television landscape will be poorer without it. I will miss this merry band of  deeply relatable sycophants and psychopaths. Amy and Dan forever!

Wow, 2019 was really the year of the female-driven half hour huh! Anyway here are some:

HONORABLE MENTIONS: 

Broad City (Comedy Central) - The best of best friends signed off forever in a pitch perfect finale.

Shrill (Hulu) - Aidy Bryant showed us she was more than a comic relief in this adaptation of Lindy West’s memoir.

The Crown (Netflix) - The UK has the very best actors and there is simply nothing to be done about it

The Good Place (NBC)- The best comedy about philosophy turned out to be just a wrapper for one of the year’s best love stories.

And there we have it 2019 done. Turns out I didn’t finish a ton of dramas - oops! Sorry Chernobyl and When They See Us! I was not in a place to receive information that could hurt me.  There’s always next year.

Wk 5

Ok so from Sunday to Wednesday I did nothing but stay in bed. The weekend really kicked my butt.  I researched and listened to OPM and read manga and comics. I caught up on Shokugeki No Soma and the Immortal Hulk. Both I feel describe me well: a culinary enthusiast who is a thoughtfully aware rage monster. That’s a joke. I’m only up and mobile a 6-8 times a day to eat, bathroom, or say hi to inay and tatay. I don’t want to get them sick so my interactions are distanced and brief. I can still tell inay’s not at one hundred, but in your mid-eighties who really is? Every day I hear my mom buzzing around the house trying to literally do everything she can to make the living situation more comfortable for inay. They got her an at-home oxygen machine and a new cane. Mom is cooking almost every meal for five people. Cleaning and trying to find a suitable home and caregiver. Most of which is impeded by her brother and inay who do not want to spend the money they’re not even using. When she’s not here she’s at the apartment holding herself back from sticking her foot up the neighborhood managements ass to come fix our roof. It's been a month. We’re already bribing them to put us on the top of the list of repairs. I have no idea if its worth it, or if it will matter since we leave in a day. She’s also trying desperately to sell our car, but with only a weeks worth of time and wanting a full payment in cash in hand, I doubt this last day will be any different. It’s heartbreaking really. I knew we were coming into this to take care of inay, but I had no idea the amount of pressure she would put on herself doing so. Not to mention the lack of thankfulness and for some reason underlying anger, I have noticed coming from either of my grandparents and uncle Ver. We have a few moments with each other during those days and she tells me that of all the times she’s ever been back to the Philippines, this has been her loneliest experience. She starts crying and I hold her hand. She really wants to go home and see dad. And I get it. Imagine having to live with your parents who still treat you like a irresponsible teenager, when you’re 58, in front of your own child. The difference in tone and dynamic in how they talk and act towards my mom and how they talk and act with me are worlds different. I have no idea who’s mad at who, or for what reason, but every conversation is laced with this scent of resentment. It is a sad feeling to want to raise your voice, but know that it has no sound behind it. By Thursday I was healthy (enough,) fed up, and only had six days left. I escaped quarantine and went to the mall to have churros and by a sim card. With that pocket Wifi gone I needed to have some form of communication. A sim with 5 gigs cost 20 pesos. That’s less than fifty cents. That was wild. I got churros with an ube white chocolate dip. That was wild. My mom was letting me travel by myself. WIIIILD. We met up for lunch at this place called army navy burger and burrito. I had a burger for the first time in thirty Gregorian calendar days. Though not the best burger I had, it was welcoming. Mom and I talked about the plan for the next few days and told me that she found someone to replace her and convinced everyone in the house it was the smartest decision. What a trooper. I love her. The next few days mom and I spend hanging out with Kristel and Vicky, sleeping at their place, and being treated like proper guests. It’s nice to see my mom not having to everything for a change of pace. I work a few shifts at Conrado’s and hang out with two of Kristel's friends. Both of whom are lesbians and in a very “will they, won't they” rom-com situation. It’s entertaining. I’m hoping they don’t because they seem bad for each other, Kristel doesn't want it to happen because she knows one of them isn’t a lesbian, she just likes the attention lol. We go out to Korean BBQ! It was pretty good, and super cheap for unlimited everything! Like 6.50 usd. But I did spend 700+ on a plane ticket here so my small monetary victories don’t mean much. On Friday ate Vic brings us to Tagaytay to go sightseeing. We eat bulalo and is easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life. They also did a beef shank karekare which changed all my life experiences with that dish. The view we had was over a cliff during midday. The whole experience was Michael Lawrence Tyler (Mystkal.) We hit a few other restaurants on the way back home for coffee and pastries. The first is at the newly opened Ridge Park. They have natural cut bench tables and secluded huts for bigger parties, lining a path mere feet from the edge of the mountain. We grab coffees there which are crap, but we’re there for the view anyway. Wish we could visited the island that’s inside a lake that’s inside an island that’s inside a lake that’s inside a island. We were really close to it. You’ll know what I’m talking about it you Bing it. View is breathtaking and I’m happy to be sharing the moment with my family. We head out to a cafe called Bag of Beans. This one is definitely ritzier, not at all indicated by its humdrum name. Like destination wedding reception levels of fancy. It’s terraced, meaning all of it’s rooms are on different levels of the mountain but all part of the same grounds. The main area has 3 dining rooms. One next to the cashier and glass shadowbox with their baked goods. Its adjacent to the kitchen which looks fully loaded and up to date based on my nosy looks though the circular glass of the door. There’s the upstairs dining area accessed only by spiral staircase, and an outdoor area with a view of Mt. Taal and its lake. One terrace down is a newly renovated ballroom, that is slightly overhanging the cliff-side. One terrace above is an auxiliary kitchen/ power/boiler room with rooftop garden access. There’s a ridiculous water fountain piece stocked with koi between levels 2-3. The grounds manager stocked every nook with flowers and every flavor plant. This joint is swanky. Kristel and I take a look around with hot cocoa in hand and I jokingly (not jokingly) tell her to make sure to have her future wedding reception here. We head home after sundown and hit a night market before the highway to eat jackfruit on the ride home. Saturday the Mayor side throw me and my mom a going away party. My cousin Onyok who owns a wild boar piggery comes through with the lechon. It’s sweeter and has a deeper savoriness than all of the other lechon I've had. I think it’s because he finishes raising them on just fruit in their final months. It’s also ate Agnes’ birthday but as usual she’s cooking something. I join her in making empanadas, fish lumpia. She says she wants to make a career of this somehow. I tell her that just because she’s 40 now doesn’t mean she shouldn’t go for it haha. My two eldest cousins Cesar and Emma got to see each other. They’re the ones who both got strokes within weeks of each other and are pretty much bedridden. Everytime they see each other Cesar is crying and Emma is getting mad at him for it. Kuya Onyok’s wife, Cori, wouldn’t stop taking pictures of every single thing. It was a good day for her. After eating twice, I ended up playing volleyball with Onyok’s grandkids (they’re my age so that how old Onyok is if you were wondering) and I had a hard time keeping up. It was my first physical exercise in over a month I think. All of my older cousins were asking how my time here was. If I had a relaxing time being back or if I had hard time adjusting. It was “all of those things and more.” I told them. Some of the physical space I was in, but mostly depended on the people I was getting to know. Some gave me hope and drove me to keep going. Others filled me with pity, a longing to help, but not knowing where to. But all of them gave me a perspective change. Life in the Philippines is hard. Weather you have money or don’t. There are going to be relational problems between families and lovers. Government here is twice as corrupt and convoluted as it is in the states. There are actual ongoing armed conflicts, real firefights, going all over the islands. Wages suck, good jobs are scarce, and opportunities to get ahead in life seem narrow. There are some beautiful places but the uneducated majority of the populace leaves pollution thick in the air, in the water, in the streets. Religion and tradition still hold a tight grip against modern, practical, and sound policies. Still, all of the people I’ve interacted with and observed seem generally happy-go-lucky. Like things are going all according to plan. Maybe I’ve only met a handful of people here in a small amount of time, but a spirit of endurance is prevalent here. I have to pack still and say bye to the cousins I can manage to get in touch with. So i’ll leave it at this, I love this place and I’m thankful for how it both made my world smaller and larger in perspective. Ingat ka! See you in Eat-aly.

The role of Lenny was originally meant to be played by a middle-aged man. 

At the time she met with Legion writer, Noah Hawley, she had just recently torn her ACL and was on crutches, which potentially contributed to Hawley’s perception that she could play an angry male character. 

When Legion first premiered, she had just finished a day of filming and went to a bar to watch the episode, but no one around her recognized she was in the show.

For her film Ingrid Goes West, she had to die her hair red, which then prompted her to learn various facts about redheads, including the fact that redheads turn into vampires after they die.

Plaza played an NBC page on the show “30 Rock.”

Her role on the show was to introduce a tour group to the set of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. 

Plaza was a page in real life for SNL and NBC, so for her 30 Rock appearance she wore the same uniform.

Plaza hates her birthday because it makes her feel depressed about what she has not and will never get to do. 

During her 2016 birthday, she watched one episode of Game of Thrones without watching any more from the series.

When she was on Anna Faris is Unqualified, there was a Parks and Rec reunion and she got birthday cupcakes.

Singing and Dancing (link)

She was forced to do a closing musical number for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

She hates singing and dancing.

During her dance training, she remembered that when she was young, she competed in Irish River Dancing.

She attributes her awkwardness to the fact that she was trained in a dance that requires a straight face and minimal arm movement.

Plaza’s co-star, Sugar Lyn Beard, thought it would be entertaining to scare guests with gruesome makeup, which led to the production team being warned that cast members cannot harass hotel guests.

Plaza’s mom booked an Airbnb, but the owner of the apartment failed to mention that he would be sleeping on the couch.

Aubrey was the maid of honor for a wedding and was tasked with buying all the party supplies.

She purchased exclusively penis paraphernalia, including a cake that was so graphic, the show couldn’t air it.

Her mom opened up the box of penis paraphernalia and “loved it.”

For the party, two random strangers from the street were hired to be strippers.

She got her injury treated in London while she was shooting Parks and Rec by an “old-timey” English doctor.

Plaza joked that after the photobomb, Hillary confided in her that she was running for president.

Conan addressed a paparazzi photo of Aubrey and Amy Poehler hugging with Aubrey’s legs wrapped around Amy’s.

Plaza explaiined that she has a tendency to wrap her legs around people when she hugs them, which led to her grandpa calling her “Monkey” and giving her a monkey toy every year for Christmas.

Plaza frequently tweets about her obsession with Miami Heat player Chris Bosh. 

When he had a cameo on Parks and Rec, she hid in his trailer in hopes of meeting him. 

She thought it would be funny to disguise herself as his hair dresser, but he didn’t recognize her, so she actually styled his hair.

Plaza recently shot a zombie movie, which prompted Conan to ask if she had plans in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

Plaza admitted she is always prepared for an apocalypse because she sleeps with a dagger on her bedside table.

Plaza conducts a weekly shanking drill in the event her home is invaded by a zombie or a murderer.

She likes to surround herself with people who have skills that would be useful in an apocalypse, so she gifted her boyfriend helicopter lessons for his birthday.

Conan offered to take flying lessons for her.

Legion is part of X-men universe.

One of her inspirations for her character, Lenny, was David Bowie.

The middle name of her character is Cornflakes, so she jokes that Lenny Cornflakes Busker sounds like the name of a stripper. 

The creator of Legion also created the FX show Fargo.

Researched for her role as a nun in The Little Hours by reading a Bible that she stole from her hotel room.

Plaza has two rescue dogs named Stevie and Frankie, and she joked that she likes Frankie more. 

Plaza attended Catholic school from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. 

Her role as a nun in The Little Hours was especially fun for her because she “loves uniforms” ever since she wore one at Catholic school.

Plaza was a member of 4-H, which is a program for kids that encourages knowledge of agricultural skills.

Despite growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, which is a city, Aubrey has had farm experiences, such as sheering a sheep.

In the movie Dirty Grandpa, Plaza was initially asked to play the love interest of Zac Efron, but she was hellbent on securing the part of DeNiro’s love interest.

For her Dirty Grandpa audition, Plaza threw out the script, said a bunch of dirty things into the camera, and then flashed her butt.

Although Dirty Grandpa is the story of a romance between a 70 year old man and a 20 year old woman, Plaza sees the movie as a love story where DeNiro has “met his match.”

Before the movie started, DeNiro gave the entire cast a bottle of wine and a encouraging note. In order to repay him for this gift, Plaza gave him a book of Zen Buddhism with a raunchy picture of her inside.

When Plaza and DeNiro shot their love scene, her bra had been rigged to pop off for a scene that was scrapped last minute, so as soon as DeNiro made a move towards her breasts, her bra flung off.

Her work in Dirty Grandpa was especially challenging because she had to make sure their unconventional relationship didn’t come across as “disgusting.”

Robert DeNiro was initially scared of her because of her character’s makeup, but as soon as he saw her not in character, he warmed up to her.
