Pit Babe is one of my favorite types to trope that BL does not take enough advantage of and that is 'what happens when your only way out is hypermasculinity but you really aren't like naturally and so wear it like a shield again the softness so deeply inherent in your nature that your cannot risk it being exposed?' and the answer is... Babe. Babe happens.

A hypermasculine racer who tries to avoid any kind of sexual or romantic connection and pretends he doesn't care at all who melts the instant anyone shows him that they can treat him sweetly and loses himself entirely in even the tiniest amount of affection because he has never been able to safely allow himself that affection.

Babe wears masculinity like a second skin and he blocks people out and he snaps and he glares and he teases the friends he doesn't love because they are safe and they remind him that he will never love or be loved because he is not that kind of man and he scoffs and bets the first person who's given him what he wanted on a race because that's what men do. They don't care.

But the longer he spends with Charlie the less comfortable he gets in his second skin. Charlie peels him bare with a stroke of his hair, with a kiss to his forehead, with a sweet smile, with breakfast in the morning, by fighting for him, by protecting him, by waiting at home for him, by soothing him when he sulks and pouts. Charlie found all those soft parts that Babe has been protecting with his masculinity and exposed them so tenderly and so kindly and with nothing more than love.

And I love that. I want more of that. I want more toxic masculine characters realizing the persona they've crafted for themselves is not their true self but rather a mask, armor, a second skin for the world and to be able to expose the softness in the safety of the person they love.

Hi Reid,

I thought of you while riding down country roads this weekend. There is a big sign “for sale by owner” which is not uncommon. However, the property to which it was attached has been a dirt covered landfill for at least a few decades. It has the pipes sticking out to release decomposition gases and everything. Is a 30-50 year old earthen landfill something archeologists would consider? I know you all like old garbage pits, but what stage do they become interesting? your faithful follower

AHH I am so delighted that you thought about me when you saw a giant pile of trash! I'm 100% serious!

Archaeology has been pushing the boundaries around how old something has to be in order to be studied. I think of myself as a contemporary archaeologist, meaning that I'm interested in shiny new material culture (aka stuff) but my interest extends back into what we call the historical period (50 years before the present day).

I excavated in a dump that dated from the 1930s onward, and I was fascinated by some of the stuff I found! I've also worked with artifacts from a 1940s landfill, and that was super cool too!

Okay. What a trainwreck of a chapter was that?!?! I kind of like it 🤣 there's characters having different goals, there's conflict, there's fighting...

This just isn't ONS anymore. I can enjoy it because I erased basically everything after chapter 97 from my mind successfully. But this wasn't what made the series good in the first place. It doesn't help that all the characters feel so out-of-character that I'm sure they all have been replaced by demons by now.

Yet, though I deinfelty also had a lot higher hopes for the story, I like that it is at least entertaing again - when you don't put too much brain in it 🍿

I figured if I'm saving posts from Twitter I should share my flowchart about how to tell if your character is a trashcan based on how arrogant they are and how much you hate yourself for being attracted to them.

If they think they're better than you, and you hate yourself a little for being attracted to them: that's a trashcan.

If you are not attracted to them but you do want to adopt them, they are your garbage child

If you are not attracted to them and you don't want to adopt them, they are just gross

Otherwise they are probably not trash.

I once played a bag lady in a stage play, rifling through the trash for Christmas gifts because “you’d be surprised what people throw away” and over about two months of goofing with the children, my whole personality to them (and everyone else, tbh) became “loves trash” —it was fun. I filled my garbage can with new finds from the alley before showtime each day.

Now, as it so happens, my niece was 3 at the time, and the only thing she absorbed from this show was “Titi love TRASH” and now when we go for walks, eight months on, she picks up litter for me, “Titi, I find you dis!” We return home, pockets and bags brimming.

I hope she doesn’t stop, and she always connects this little altruism with her love for me—and my love for trash.
